Like most bluenoses, I wanted to be at Reading on Saturday, but under the influence of a late decree from my other half, I was in Newcastle instead, visiting the in-laws for Easter. As I'm sure you'll understand, I was gutted, but after a quick look at the Newcastle United home page, seeing that single tickets were available for their own little relegation 6 pointer and never having been inside St James's Park before, I thought it had to be better than sipping sherry with my wife's family and got myself a ticket. A few hours later, I was sat somewhere towards the back of the South Stand (Gallowgate as was), my hastily purchased (and possibly later life-saving) black and white scarf wrapped around my neck, Blues shirt prudently hidden under 3 outer layers of clothing to stave off the arctic climaste, and my fingers crossed for `barley' somewhere behind my back every time I jumped off my seat in `excitement'. Well, it was an interesting afternoon as well as a cold and noisy one. I'm not entirely sure what I made of it when I emerged thankfully unscathed a couple of hours later, but here are a few bits and pieces that crossed my mind - Fulham were poor, Newcastle won because they were only mostly poor. I couldn't for the life of me work out how the midfield of Butt-Barton-Geremi had managed to boss things for much of the second half against us on the previous Monday! The good news is that it's reassuring to see that there are worse teams than us in this division... even if some of them are above us in the table! - The Toon support is just .... big! They may be a one club city, but they are also not exactly a big city, and yet they sold out a 53,000 seater stadium for the visit of the mighty Fulham. I look forward to the day when we get such loyalty from so many of our fans! - We often moan about our ticket prices being high, yet for a fixture like Fulham, we could expect to get in for 27-30 pounds maximum, even if there were no `special offers'. At St James's it was a lowest category game and yet the tickets were still 30-48 pounds! - I am often disappointed at St Andy's that we get on the players' backs too easily, but 2-0 up, the fans were still moaning about the lack of performance / effort of their players, complete uselessness of their midfield and excess of pies in one striker's case. Maybe this is something that is just intrinsic to the paying football supporter? Maybe the negative outlook sticks and stays after watching a few weeks of under-par performance? Still, it didn't seem to stop them from `Walking in a Keegan Wonderland etc etc', poor deluded things! Ah well, it was an interesting trip, but a truly surreal one. I'm looking forward to getting back to where I belong against Man City on Saturday :banner: :banner: :banner: |
