Thank you very much David for a fantastically well timed piece in the last few weeks discussing our potential demotion to the league below*. With the squad/team/management and the fans needing as much positive thought as possible our fearless media shy leader has opened the floodgates for the great Birmingham City fire sale. What makes this even more special is that we aren't in the bottom three and should the status quo be maintained (which it very well might) the fire sale and our demotion would be of no interest to anyone and the rumours would cease in their current format.

So now the fearless leader has spoken the debate and rumour mill appears to be springing into action with this and that club being linked with this and that player**. Consequently this will have, no doubt, an affect on already edgy supporter base as to the chances of our survival. Instead of talking up our chances of staying up we have opted for the prudent marketing ploy of dampening expectations and beginning to sow seeds of doubt in the support that hold optimism as one of its strong benefits. Blowing away the clouds of survival and pointing us, metaphorically, into a pit of coca cola despair. This is of course coupled with a realisation that has now been thrust upon us that we must sell sell sell to reverse the demotion.

I accept that we must look at our current plight with some level of trepidation and fear the future to some degree, but I do not in anyway agree with the mantra that we should begin talking down our chances before the fat lady has even been appointed as the fat lady for the last night of a long season of 38 proms. No less I assume the fat lady hasn't even predicted the aria that she will be bellowing out as her precise and detailed account of the 07/08 campaign. Why must we be the club that conducts our business in the most public of settings. Why can we not be the club revered for it's forward thinking and determination by never admitting defeat before defeat is upon us. 'Don't start firing until you see the whites of there eyes' and please don't write us off from within or cast a moment of doubt upon us.

Well, first of all, I don't understand what the thread is about  The opening sentence baffled me because I don't remember such an article being published. Also, if it was from a few weeks ago, isn't this thread a little late?

McFadden's on fire sale
JAMES McFADDEN looks certain to go if struggling Birmingham are relegated.
Chairman David Gold has admitted there will be a fire sale if City do not stay up.

And Scottish international striker McFadden, who arrived from Everton for £5million only in January, will generate the most cash.

Blues sold 15 players when they were last relegated in 2006, raising around £18m and slashing millions off the wage bill.

This time Brum boss Alex McLeish will have to sell big earners like McFadden and fellow striker Mikael Forssell.

Gold said: "You have to cut costs and we have plans to do that. The big-ticket items have to go. It worked well the last time."

Forssell whose current deal ends this summer, faces an uncertain future.

And McLeish said: "It's difficult talking about contracts when you don't know where you are going to be. We'll wait and see."

BRUM AND GET FAD
JAMES McFADDEN will top the list of players sold off by Birmingham City if they are relegated.
Chairman David Gold has admitted there are already plans in place for a fire sale of talent if City can’t survive the drop.

And that will alert both sides of the Old Firm.

McFadden, who switched to St Andrew’s from Everton for £5million in January, will generate the most cash with a move — just four months after he arrived. City sold Emile Heskey and Jermaine Pennant in a mass clear-out that stripped the squad of 15 players when they were last relegated in 2006.

That brought in around £18m and slashed millions more off the wage bill.

This time around boss Alex McLeish will come under pressure to do the same, offloading big earners like McFadden, Mikael Forssell, Franck Queudrue, Sebastian Larsson and Olivier Kapo.

Gold said: “The last time we were relegated we had to sell off some quality players — and we will do the same this time.

“You have to cut costs and we have plans to do that.

“By selling a couple of quality players you generate the finance to bring in the kind of players who will get you out of the Championship.

Ah I see. Thank you for clearing that up.

I think the only thing wrong with the article is the timing of it. I don't think they called a press conference to announce they were going to release a load of players if they're relegated... It just seems to me like they were asked about it and gave an honest response when perhaps it might've been better to just keep their mouths shut for now.

Which would be a very good start. The point is that the leaders of the club can assist in many ways one of them being by boxing clever with there comments and thinking of the consquences of not doing so.

Larsson isnt a big earner here, I cant imagine.

The experienced Prem players, Queudrue, Forssell, McFadden I can believe, but not for Larsson

Top post TJ I am with you all the way on this one - the only positivity coming out of the club at the moment is from the players.

The board and manager seem to be under the impression we have been relegated already. I have a feeling that this is so if we do go down the blame can be laid at Bruce’s feet but if we stay up it will be a case of McLeish doing excellent work with Bruce’s players.

All the same it would be nice to here something from the manager or board that indicates they think we can stay up.

Why isn't this in Blues chat?

I'm not sure what to think about this, as IMO Gold is damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.

Although he seems not to be singing off the same hymn sheet as the players, to be fair he is only stating the facts, relegation means a clear out...

I seem to remember the club, as a collective, saying we wouldn't get relegated 2 years ago, but that didn't work, so maybe a bit of realism is not out of order?

The board would be irresponsible if they did not plan for all. I'm sure they are also planning for next season in the Prem too. But the scummy tabloids will only publish what they think will shock and create debate.

The headline 'Gold says Birmingham will buy a couple of quality players if they stay in the Prem...' is not so interesting is it?

Agreed but it's the time of the season when if like never before there should be a party line to be followed. I don't think it's a case of dammed if you do and don't, but hey that's an opinion.

This is in Football chat because 'i'm ******g Useless, dup dup dup dup, ******g'

I don't like BRUM AND GET FAD. Surely they could've come up with something better? Especially when the name Gold is ripe for the punning.

i think his timing is off with the story and i fully agree with what the first poster is saying, now more then ever we should be getting behind our boys and looking towards survival rather then thinking about relegation. We can pull this off with abit of support and motivation but that needs to run from the top of the chain aswell.

100% agree TJD said as much in other thread about clearouts.

Lets face it Blues is little more than a hobby to the Board as I can not believe any astute business people would be as Naive as to make these comments at what is a nervy time for players and fans.

Once again the Board has spoken before thinking, do they honestly think a player having these kind of comments blasted at them and their families through loose comments and the press are going to play better or worse. Sometimes when things are not going so well you can put it to the back of your head and work hard to turn things around. What a player doesn't need is his family ringing him up asking where he is going to be next season! Players and their immediate families make a commitment by moving closer to the club that signs them, all of that stability has been swiped away by the stupidity of these comments.

Just for once Golds, Sulli etc "SOMETIMES IT IS BETTER TO SAY NOTHING" or are you really that desperate to sell off our best players even though we are not even in the bottom three yet...only at the Blues!

Does it matter? I have linked this thread through to that one in the original post. This thread is more about the negative attitude rather than the fire sale.

i would say that gold is being more realistic than negative.

last time there was over optomistic signs from the board and it damaged there credibility in the eyes of alot of fans now there being realistic and recognising that.

Yes.

And lets hope he is equally out-of-touch this time as he was when we got relegated.
