Two goals from Mauro Zarate gave 10-man Birmingham victory and a huge boost in their relegation fight at the expense of Manchester City. The Argentine opened the scoring when he clipped in Franck Queudrue's pass before rifling in the second from the edge of the area, after the break. Elano reduced the deficit with a penalty after Queudrue's foul on Benjani which he was sent off for. Gary McSheffrey added a third from the spot after he was fouled by Sun Jihai. With so many of the Premier League's strugglers bunched up at the bottom it was vital for Blues to get a win. And it would have been a massive injustice if they had finished the 90 minutes having not picked up all three points - although if Benjani's shot had gone in instead of hitting the post, then there could have been a different outcome. 606: DEBATE What did you think of referee Rob Styles' performance? Every one of the Bimingham's starting XI were up for the fight from the first whistle in contrast to the visiting team, who, in all fairness, had less to play for. Their A-grade endeavours in defence and midfield gave the potent Sebastian Larsson more time and space down the right. Larsson deliveries twice cause problems - first, when McSheffrey volleyed over from eight yards and then when Sun Jihai inadvertantly thrashed the midfielder's cross inches over his own crossbar. Manchester City keeper Joe Hart had not been properly tested until 10 minutes before the break when Queudrue's outlandish overhead from the edge of the area had to be tipped over. But the England Under-21 player was not given much time to perform heroics moments later when Queudrue slipped in Zarate who dinked the ball over the blonde-haired shot-stopper for his second goal in two games. The Argentine Under-20 player also worked like a demon for his side, helping out in defence as well as proving a tremendous foil for Mikael Forssell in attack. His efforts were rewarded yet again when he doubled the home side's lead with a superb low angled drive from the edge of the area. Alex McLeish's grin was as broad as the Spaghetti Junction but that lasted four minutes when Elano reduced the deficit from the spot. The penalty was given after Queudrue brought down Benjani in the area and was subsequently sent off although the decision was protested because Radhi Jaidi was also close to the action. The goal injected a small spark into the play of Manchester City, whose best hopes of making Europe are through the Intertoto Cup or Uefa's Fair Play award. But whatever hopes they had of a fightback disappeared with one whistle from Styles who deemed defender Sun Jihai to have fouled McSheffrey inside the area, even though it looked like the forward was the instigator of the shoulder barge. McSheffrey took on the responsibility from 12 yards out and he made no error. Bruce's boys held on for the remainder of the match for what could prove to be a priceless win. |
