I moved to the US because my wife is American and she got very homesick in the UK after 3 years or so....We had a baby and as my mother had passed away previously and my dad was quite old we were able to get more help from my wife's parents ....baby sitting whilst we both worked etc I was getting tired of how expensive the UK had become but in actual fact it has grown increasingly expensive here over the last 5 or 6 years.....but I think that applies to the UK too in fact as well as many other countries around the world I'm between jobs right now and with the global credit crunch going on right now our house has lost value and everyday things are more expensive although your income does not increase to match the rises....So like millions of others both in the USA and in Europe things are quite hard right now As for the sport fans.....well Americans think British football fans are mainly a bunch of nutters but that only points back to the hooliganism of the 80's which made big news here back then ......Football (or soccer as it's called) has really grown in popularity with the now global coverage of the game and Manchester United are by far the biggest supported team over here ....but just about every club in England has a fanbase in North America of some kind, I once saw a Beau Brummie sticker on the back of a carpet fitter's truck once here in my own neigbourhood :LMAO: The 4 most popular sports here are NFL football, baseball , ice hockey and basketball and the fan rivalry can be just as intense but it is a friendly rivalry.....Barbecues,hot dogs and beer shared with opponents fans are the norm at the huge Amercian stadiums.....Of course the Yanks are years ahead of us when it comes to selling the respective sports, stadia and marketing....they are world famous for it....But the TV commentators and analysts are WAY, WAY over the top to the point where they become totally nauseating.....I rarely watch Yank sports on TV....they last way too long and are riddled with frequent and annoying commercials....that would never work in British or European football obviously....I did follow the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (my local side and they have a wonderful 65,000 stadium....I worked next door to it a few years back) for a while in 2003 when they won the Super Bowl but even now I still cannot understand the basic strategies of the game.....You really have to be 'born and raised into it' I think In baseball there's kind of a monopoly on success mainly by the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox.....I hate baseball and basketball with a passion though ...but Michael Jordan and Shaq O Neill are still paid millions to do TV commercials for the major brands....You'll see Haynes underwear in every store in America and believe me when you think of Haynes underwear you think of Michael Jordan....he's probably tripled his income since he retired from sport just by being filmed in boxer shorts and tee shirts and vests....NFL Football legend Dan Marino makes loads of TV commercials too The NFL teams are all well supported but the big guns I would guess are the New England Patriots , Green Bay Packers ,the Dallas Cowboys ,the Pittsburgh Steelers and the 2 New York teams the Jets and the Giants .....San Francisco 49's are one of the biggest and hold the record for most Super Bowl titles (the OJ Simpson era had a lot to do with that....he really was a sporting legend back then) American fans love on field or on-ice violence and high scoring games....that is why they created their own sports and that's also why they love ice hockey, boxing and wrestling .....And of course the elite players in these sports themselves earn obscene amounts of money every year But nothing could sway from me from Association Football or Rugby Union.....Americans think their sports are the best but hate to be reminded that Association Football is the most popular spectator sport in the world by far....They quickly go on the defensive to dismiss our brand of football but the only reason for that is because the USA have never really been that good at it.........If and when the United States ever win the FIFA World Cup watch them all come out of the woodwork.....a Big IF of course and highly unlikely in the near future......However the USA national team is actually the best it's ever been and they can only get better I think, they have already reached 2 WC quarter finals so the steady improvement is there to be seen.....Again though they can never really compete unless they start producing talented players of their own and build up their own domestic league which in honesty right now is about Championship to League One standard depending on the teams......Beckham's LA Galaxy have struggled lately and got rid of coach Ruud Gullit although on paper they have some decent players....There are 2 teams in LA now ,Galaxy and Chivas and 1 other California base side in San Jose but their support is drawn mainly from the large Mexican populations out there ....Soccer of course in the number one sport in Mexico too Americans in general actually think we take our football way too seriously.....probably explains why they think some clubs still have bands of hooligans (the term they use are 'rowdies' ) ....which as far as Blues v Villa games go, isn't actually that far from the truth Posted Image :Blues: |

I am American and you are right if one ever thought Americans were not capatalist just turn on the tv, and you may be able to watch a show during the commercials. I do think you are right that football is gaining popularity here in the states slowly but surely. I think Becks really drove up the intret last year. But untill the US mens team can compete globably us Americans probably won't watch like we do on the level as one of our big three. Hey we like to win, ha ha. The Bucs do have a great stadium, but I am partial to anything that has a replica of a pirate ship and has a working cannon. |

Canada is a lot more relaxed than at home and the skiing which was the main reason i came here is just out of this world. Also compared to Europe were i have skied a lot we don't have to share the ski slopes with Europeons and thats a huge bonus. The grass isn't that much greener, even though the chance to have your own business and make good money is much better than at home in the UK. I really don't think it really matters were i am as long as i am having fun. If the ski slopes and the amount of snow were as good at home i would probably stay there. I have never had a problem with England it is as good or as bad as anywere else. It is what you make of were you live not were you live. I will be here for a few more years and then i will move back to England, but then i will go and live in Northern Italy. My real grip if i had any with canada is that it is just to big and driving anywere you will travel ridiculous distances and thats just a real pain in the bakside litrally. |
