I just hope we, players and fans, don't get too frustrated in the first match on Saturday.

Sheff Utd may well have built the best defence in the Championship, and it looks as though they are building from the opposite end to that of Blues, where we have concentrated on strengthening attack and midfield.

Sheff Utd defence includes; Greg Halford, Sun Jihai, Chris Morgan, Matthew Kilgallon, and Ugo Ehiogu, with Gary Speed and Michael Tonge playing in midfield in front of the defence.

If Blues can break that defence down we will have done very well imo, and may augur well for the season, but it is only one of 46 games.

It is going to be a long hard season, with a difficult first match. Let's keep getting behind the lads even if we do get frustrated at what may be happening on the pitch.

I think we could exploit Halford, as he is meant to be dreadful. But yeah, I agree they do have some good defenders. Almost the opposite of our team at the moment.

That defence doesn't look in the slightest bit worrying, yes it's decent by Championship standards but in the Prem we faced better defences than that every week apart from against Derby, McFadden, Phillips, Larsson etc should be looking to set their stall out against these sort of teams. **thumbup

I wouldn't say they have the best defence.

Both of our fullbacks are better than the ones they have, and Ridgewell is as good as any of their centre backs.

Probably about the same in all honesty.

Morgan and Kilgallon both make Ridgewell look like a parks player..........IMO!

Agreed, plus Michael Tonge could well have gone by Saturday.

Yer sure sheffield utd got a good defence, they gonna be up there, but i think we made some great signings so far we look strong in midfield and up front, just one or two additions at the back, think we will be to strong for most teams this season, home and away.

That is one of the strangest posts ive ever seen. Not to sound harsh here but if thats the strongest defence in this league then we are laughin! Their 2 wing backs are completly rubbish and kilgallon reminds me of Purse ( Good player but has 2 mistakes a game in him) with our front line they should have a field day with them.

I see what you're saying, but even if they did have the best defence which I'm not sure they have, we easily have the best attack. Not only that but we have players in McSheffrey and Larsson who have decent scoring records too. We can and will outscore everyone in this league.

Sheff Utd's defence turned out as tough as predicted.
Blues will not meet a better defence this season imo.
Very pleasing the way we kept at it without getting frantic and having Phillips is a fantastic bonus for us. Always possible to score with him around. Doesn't do much overall, but does it brilliantly where he paid to do it :D

With the 2 new signings yet to play, creative midfielder and very speedy left winger, it seems we could have a well balanced side that will break down most defences this season **thumbup

A great start and 3 pts against a very well organised side which had a very good defence. Blues won, despite not playing brilliantly, by grinding it out in the end. We will need to do that many many times this season, but thankfully not all teams will have such a solid defence as Sheff Utd

:Blues: Fully agree with all thatyou have said they came for a draw and it seemed like we could have played for weeks and would not have scored.

But I take my hat off to AMc he decided to field a 4-2-4 in the last few minutes which could have killed us but instead it gave us the one chance to score and hey presto.

A frustrating game all in all with us not always showing as much urgency as we should have and being somewhat over cautious at times.

Bring on the next nail biter.

If we had played on the groung instead of the long ball most of the game,we would have scored more. Morgan and Kilgallon are not blessed with pace but once again blues never learnt their lessons and lost nearly everything in the air BUT a win is a win so I am happy but we must learn quickly.

Agree.

It wasn't the best day for long ball weather wise but also when we played on
the ground, most often or not we couldn't find that killer ball. Looked OK passing across the through midfield but couldn't put the strikers in.

Goal came from long ball knock down so there you go.

We made their defence look good by playing to their strengths, McSheffrey and Larsson didn't take on the full backs anywhere near enough, McFadden was the only one who exploited their real weakness by looking to play the ball in behind their defence where we could hurt them with their lack of pace, a team with decent wingers who turn up will give Sheff Utd a torrid time.

Bring on Quincy in my opinion, I will always support McSheffrey but he isn't beyond fair criticism, and it's getting to the stage where I'm thinking he can continue his personal crisis somewhere else.

I think though a decent defence, it was a case of they were really up for it. First game of the season, concentration was good throughout, came not to give much away and nearly pulled it off.
