Although I'd love to stand up for the whole game - this is where the roots of football lie. When you go to watch a Sunday League game you don't sit down do you?

The roots of football lie in the fact that all you need is some grass and a ball. People can watch and stand from the sidelines.

But going back to the game yesterday, excitement was few and far between and this was about the 2nd time I stood up to watch a Blues attack. I didn't stand up for the entire game, just stood up when everyone else did when we had a good chance.

Everyone in the block infront and indeed the whole kop and tilton were standing up but people in this 'singing corner' wanted me to sit down and I suppose, not get too excited. A complete joke. When we scored I felt like asking him to sit down lol

From now on I'm going back to the good old kop corner where they stand up (along with everyone else) when the Blues have a good chance.

As a sidenote, I mentioned this to my fiance and she was gob smacked. Having never been to a football before she herself was exhasperated that someone would ask another supporter to sit down at a game, when they are standing up to watch an attack.
We regulary go to rock gigs at the Birmingham Academy and wouldn't dream of sitting down there! Of course Football has moved on and you can't expect to stand up the entire game (although it would be nice), but these fans who try to diminish the enjoyment of other fans are the types who shouldn't be in the 'singing' corner ffs.

Also, Singing corner? don't make me laugh. If memory serves it was actually the family stand that started a 'stand up if you love the blues' and no-one joined in, in the block I was in. Also not much singing at all really. At Blues games in the past I'v never been able to hear myself singing but not yesterday. :(

I had some tw*t  behind me who told me to sit down after I stood up to watch a Blues attack. Isn't that what you do at a football game? The attack sort of subsided and I was hlaf standing up / half sitting down.

Wouldn't mind, but everyone in the block infront were standing up!

F*ck off and go to the Library ffs. This was in Block 1...the so called 'Singing corner'. More like sit down with your blanket!

I agree with you Stevo, the modern day bluenose that attend the home games are an embarrassment to the club.I hate home games now they are so boring with the prawnsandwich brigade occupying four stands. As for the singing area lol thats the biggest load of !"£$ ive ever heard.Anybody that reading this that sat in this area leave your library card at home next time. Some tool told me to sit down and shut up in the Tilton yesterday.WTF are these idiots doing at a football match. The point of being there is to be heard and support the team.I for one wont be quiet for those divs that refuse to sing, ill just have to be loader to make up for new breed of supportor.

Be load and proud.

From what I saw on Saturday (I was at the game) Bent is not the answer.......he didn't win much in the air (he did get a sarcastic cheer when he did just before he went off) I don't think he's all that to be honest, seems like a poor mans Heskey, and will be used in the same manner. It's an easy option to 'lump' it up to the big man, which isn't what Eck has been talking about, i.e. the good attacking football, not the lump it up and see what happens...... We used our fisrt get out of jail card on Saturday, we made hard work of it while looking comfortable though....

Seb really didn't look like as interested as he was last season, I do think he'll be off shortly.......can't say I agree with how he's going about it BUT if he doesn't want to wear the shirt get rid and get someone in who does.

McSheffs had a real poor 25 mins at the start but picked up and seemed to get better as the game went on, lacking in confidence I think but will get better......

Thought the back 4 looked relatively comfortable apart from the Ridgewell mistake towards the end, Tiny looked to be carrying a knock after winning that header in the first half (leaving the United player out of it on the gound) Parnaby looked steady and Murphy looked really good.

Thought Carsley and Nafti were great in the middle, think I'd prefer to see a creative ball player int he middle.... We're still missing the ability to play in a through ball as the middle men were obviously instructed to get it out wide (which they did do) see what happens when the new boys are back from injury....

Didn't think we got behind them enough to create many chances, which is something that will come with more games as it seemed we were in 'pre-season' mode still.....

All in all 3 points in the bag and on to the next game!!

Bent felt he was so much better than every other player on the park that when he was coming out after the game he was the only player, and I mean only, who was arrogant and gave the impression that signing my lad's clapperboard was a massive favour. Seb didn't even react when his car got smacked and carried on signing. McLeish when thanked for his time said that it was absolutely nothing and it was he who should be thanking the fans for their support.

Let's hope Bent improves all round and fast. He was signed to score goals, so the odd attempt on goal wouldn't go amiss...

Which says more for Quinn than it does for Bent. A single effort on goal from a striker who earlier mistimed his jump to miss getting on the end of a sublime cross.....

Emile Heskey, anyone?

Going back to the original subject. The miserable idiot who has been sitting in front of me with his long suffering wife for the past four seasons has finally disappeared. He is not the first miserable person to have disappeared either. Do you think they finally got fed up and decided not to come any more? Or is it more sinister than that. This guy hasn't been looking too well for the past few months, and it is said that constant depression is not good for your health. Maybe he has gone to meet his maker. MFI I guess. They seem to make a bad job of everything they create.

Provided by the much slated Gary McSheffrey

I feel his contribution is more heavily criticised than any other player, there is no deigning he has been off form but he still produces one or two great passes each game but these are always ignored.
With regards to standing I find it annoying when idiots more intent on winding up the away fans stand in front of me and prevent me from watching the game.
I don’t have these days to worry to much about this as I sit in the main stand but this comes with its own announces, Fans getting up before halftime to get to the food or fans leaving before the full time whistle have very often obscured my view of critical moments on the pitch.
I suppose you just have to put up within.

There was only a single effort on goal from McFadden as well, and that went high. Very high. Bent would also have been on the end of an excellent cross from McSheffrey but for a fantastic interception by Kilgallon as well.

So what exactly has Bent done to deserve the Gronkjaer treatment?

No players deserve to be abused by the fans (even if some of them are lazy over-payed divas) but neither should they be wrapped up in cotton wool and warmly praised for the slightest piece of quality or effort they put in, McSheffrey rightly or wrongly gets stick because he has done very little for a long time and people expect better of him.

Bent suffers because he comes with a reputation for being a lazy player, and he hardly did anything to disprove it in the games I've seen him play so far, maybe it's just his fitness is not up to scratch yet, and a couple of goals will always change people's opinions, we'll just have to wait and see. **thumbup

It was Bent's debut. You'd think he would be out to impress and win the fans' over. Carsley was immense, Philips was superb in his timing (even if it was by his own admission a mishit shot - nevertheless he did what he was brought here for). Maybe it was just an off day for Bent - but based on what I saw, he can't cut it in this team. There is room for improvement on his part, so let's hope that is what happens in the coming games. I just have a bad feeling is all - let's hope I am proven wrong.

Agree entirely with you Dani. What are these muppets doing at a football match.
On the Bent issue i couldnt understand why we bought him. No more than an average champ striker, we got better so why waste money. could have put that towards the huge fee required for Watson(2mill !!).
But i dont agree with booing own players, hardly going to inspire!

This is the problem I am talking about. You've made a decision on a player based on an hour of football. Some, certainly in Block 4, made their decision based on a hell of a lot less. How can this be of benefit to the side as a whole? Let alone the player himself. Why can't we support the player, try and boost his confidence and make him feel welcome at the club? Sure, he may not have been the most popular transfer in the world, but he's here now and all the moaning, criticising and sarcastic cheering in the world isn't going to change that.

As for how he played, I thought he did ok. Nothing more, nothing less. He certainly wasn't the worst performer on the day. He kept Kilgallon and Morgan occupied, created some space for McFadden to work in, and won his fair share of headers, but McFadden was too frequently too far away from him to make them count.

That's been a common problem we've had for some time that our strikers are too far apart almost constantly, something that has come from not having a settled partnership in donkeys years.

The length of time it took the neanderthal sitting behind me to decide that Marcus Bent was a waste of money and he shouldn't be on the pitch.

Well he was quicker on the uptakethan me, probably 35mins into the game when I made my mind up.

A complete waste of time, space and money. Everything AMc talks up about him and his strengthts are more in-tune with Cameron Jerome's.

I don't think anything I have posted indicates that I have made a 'decision'. That implies a denunciation or a championing of the player. I have done neither. All I have done is say what others are also thinking, and that is that Bent did not play as well as he was expected to. He was bought to score goals, yet he had one shot on goal (which went unrecorded by the stats men by the way, presumably as the ball travelled less than a metre from his boot after he struck it in the general direction of the goal - maybe they should count Taylor's goal kicks as attempts on goal too? If one went in it would certainly count both as a goal ands as a statistical shot on target!).

I have also said that Bent needs to improve - do you deny this? Are you happy that he only played 'ok'?

Finally, I hope I am wrong about my misgivings - and I have openly stated this.

So how am I making a 'decision' on Bent?

And yes, my comments are based on one match (not an hour of football as you say) plus his attitude towards the fans who stayed behind after to try to meet their heroes (my lad being 14 thinks all Blues players are heroes, but came away thinking that Bent was a prima donna).

(mental note made... only praise players' performances, never criticise them...)

I think we are crossing wires here. I have no issue with people discussing their views on forums and in pubs and wherever else after the match, that's all part and parcel of football and it's healthy to discuss. My issue is with the manner of vocal denunciation of a Birmingham City player in the middle of the game, or to be more precise, less than a tenth of the way into his debut. How is that healthy to this football club?

Those who began (and always in the same foghorn of a voice I've noticed) to air such views did so without meeting the bloke outside after the game and deciding he wasn't a particularly pleasant character.

Apologies for the misinterpretation of your original post. Hopefully this clears up the argument I am trying to make.

Cool, it's a healthy argument you make. Booing any of our players is a big no-no. I am wholeheartedly behind anyone who wants that to stop, and anyone who indulges in it is a buffoon in my book.

Sorry Woodbine couldn't disagree more.

I "stand" along with my two sons and many others towards the rear of blk 19 (row 37) Kop corner and have done for best part of 6 years now. We moved there for the atmosphere and have never regretted it and I'll continue to stand there. Next time you're at St Andrews take a look where the atmosphere and singing is being generated from.

No one has ever proved that sitting down makes watching football matches any safer, yet many have attributed poor atmosphere to all seater stadia, so much so that clubs in more enlightened parts of the world now have safe standing areas and the campaign continues to get them introduced here. (See link in my sig)

Accept and conform? Why? Because some numpty who's possibly never been to a football match says so? Lambs have always gone to the slaughter mate. Resist and challenge the absurd, thats what brings progress.

If sitting down is good for singing why have people always stood to sing hymns in church and at school assemblies etc? Why is there better atmoshphere in a mosh pit at concerts?

Perhaps if you want to sit and moan about people trying to sing and generate a decent atmosphere then YOU are the ones who should not be there, whatever the law says! Maybe try a riverbank if you want that kind of peace at a sporting venue.

:drink: To all the standers and singers.

As someone who was at Hillsborough in 1989 sitting in the Main Stand nearest to Leppings Lane, I can honestly say that comment is cr+p.

I watched that tragedy unfold from 40 yards and would never want to experience anything remotely like it again. I'm sorry but standing and singing is no substitute for sitting and leaving the ground alive.

Well said. That is reason enough for all seater stadiums. If people want to stand at football matches they should watch League 1 and 2 or non league football. Once you have more than 10000 people in a stadium you need to be able to control them for theirs and other fans safety.
