Would be great to find an old fellah or woman who remember Blues very first game at St Andrews back in 1906 :applause: :applause:

They could even print the Telegram they got from the Queen for reaching 100 years old

Seriously though I wonder if anyone is out there who can recall Blues first FA Cup Final in 1931 v The Baggies

How about it,Woodbine ??? :silence:

My Great Grandfather was at the first ever game at St. Andrews, sadly I never met him. His son; my Grandfather was at the '31 final and his son; my Dad was at the '56 final. I've had some great stories told me down years and I think this website is a great idea.

Did you know (fascinating fact alert): St Andrews was used to sign-up men in 1915 for the first world war, the men who enlisted joined the 15th. 16th and 17th battalions of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, the Birmingham Pals. Their first action was on the Somme, and then for the remainder of the conflict they were in action taking many casualties.

Birmingham provided the largest single force of volunteers in that actual period (Kitcheners army), something overlooked by those who choose to mock our accents or decry our city without even trying to understand its heritage.

So next time you are at St Andrews think of those guys who joined-up there in 1915 to help their country and were never to return.

I've got to agree Hooby, which is why I'm still peeved off we've had minutes applause and minutes silence's for people who IMO didn't deserve it.

I do not recall ever having a minutes silence at St. Andrews to pay respect to those who have given their lives at war, be it 90 years ago, 70 years ago or in the last 10 years...

For anyone who wants more information on this (if you're sad like me!) then there is a fantastic book that you can read:

Birmingham Pals - Terry Carter, available on Amazon

For those who don't know, the 'Pals' were groups of volunteers from areas who joined-up in 1914/15, they were kept together in units. Unfortunately their first action was on the Somme, where whole regiments were virtually wiped out, meaning whole communities were lost.

Birmingham provided three regiments, the largest contribution, and this is the story of how they joined, trained and often died. They formed part of the Royal Warwicks and their cap badge was the traditional Warwicks antelope with 'Birmingham Pals' underneath. A search on ebay will show the badge in more detail.

A very interesting bit of Birmingham history.

My Grandad was a member of the "Old Contemptibles" Local groups of soldiers who were already in the army prior to the outbreak of WW1. and the pub where they met has just been refurbished in Livery street. You can check this out too if you want more info on the "Birmingham pals".

I think its also a point worth noting. They fought and died side by side, irrelevant of which Birmingham Club they supported!

:drink: To the memory of each and every one of them.

:drink: To their counterparts all over the world still fighting in the name of this Great Country even now.
