Prodigy may have to be patient
Aug 13 2008

JORDON Mutch is chomping at the bit to become one of Blues’ youngest ever debutants.
But Alex McLeish is not necessarily going to pitch him into the fray tonight at Wycombe Wanderers in the Carling Cup.
The midfield prodigy will be among the substitutes, among the seven allowed to be named in the competition from this season. Mutch could come on and make his bow – aged 16 and 255 days – depending on how the tie is panning out in all probability.
McLeish said: “He has broken through and looks as if he could be a good player.
“He had a terrific game against the Czech team [Viktoria Plzen] on the pre-season tour.
“But I am also mindful of taking care of him, not rushing him and exposing him too early.
“I feel that when I play him, then you will know he’s ready and people will see it for themselves on the field.
“He’s been training with us for about a season now, he’s really slotted in with the first-team players, but whether I start him over the next couple of months or so, you will have to wait and see.
“Young boys, they climb a hill rapidly, they go very high quickly, and sometimes they hit a wee plateau.
‘‘I am just keeping a close eye on him, but he will be involved tonight, he will be on the bench.”

Does anyone else think that building the hype and pressure on young Jordon by using terms such as 'prodigy' puts too much pressure on the young chap?

All the hype can be somewhat overwhelming and may be detrimental to his progress. So, does anyone else think that until he starts proving himself in the first team we should perhaps take some of the pressure off the young lad?

I don't think we will see much of him first half of the season so the talk should die down a bit... however I may be wrong and he may have a stormer tonight and be a regular... I just think with the 2 new lads fit he won't make the bench at the moment

To be honest I think it'd be better off for McLeish to just get his debut out of the way, the longer it's held off the more of a "big deal" it's going to become. Get the first one out of the way, and then allow him to gradually become a part of the side, in the same way David Moyes did with Wayne Rooney.

If you are destined to be a great then you will handle it at that age - Trevor Francis and more recently Wayne Rooney. Oh, not forgetting Pele who was winning World Cups at an age only a few months older that Mutch.

I'd agree to something along those lines.

It's only detrimental if he lets it go to his head, if he's that kind of person it's best to find out sooner rather than later.
But I agree, theres no point hyping up a 16 year old too much, when was the last decent thing to ocme from oour youth system anyway.

tbh, I get the impression the 'mutch' career machine is more finely tuned than we think.

He rejected bigger clubs than us to sign for Birmingham, so I expect this was due to having more of a chance of breaking into the 1st team sooner?

If we are leading tonight and comfortable, I would get him on as soon as possible.

As franscar said, get it out of the way.

I've seen mutch mentioned as the 'One to watch' in a few footy sites... so the eyes of the 'english' footballing are already on him.

I *assume* they want to only put him in a successful team, so he feels confident. If a player goes in to a struggling team, he will only take negatives out of it. It's hard to give a good performance if the team aren't getting on the ball and dominating.

As for his tag of a prodigy... that won't hinder him at all, it will make him confident and positive. As long as he plays in a successful team then that feeling will carry on.

The fitness team will make him fit, the coaches will build up the technical side. Confidence will make him apply it all on field. It all takes care of itself if the right management is in place, which I suspect it might be under McLeish.
