Becomes the longest serving monarch in British history this day surpassing the 63 year , 7 month, 2 day reign of her great, great grandmother Victoria

Deserves a mention

Well done, Ma'am :applause:

Of course it's quite a different Britain and quite a different world she oversees today as Head of State ....and we'll no doubt get the opinions of the Anti Royalists.......over to you, Pooley

Surprisingly (well...for those remotely interested) she is not the longest reigning monarch alive today

King of Thailand has 69 years on his throne and counting ......such a very, troubled nation and one in some crisis in recent times though

The record holder is King Louis XIV of France (that's fourteen by the way ....hee hee < < ) with 72 years

Hopefully Liz will reign over us up to and beyond her moms age (102) Charles is not imho fit for office, while the Idea of seeing Camilla as his queen, I find repugnant.

Couldn't agree more, Des

Never liked Charles at all.....too pompous and stuck in a time warp

An adulterer as well.........King Edward VIII was forced to abdicate due to marrying a divorced woman (Camilla was also an adulterer and divorcee) and Ann Boleyn literally lost her head due to some alleged adultery

Wills would make a much more modern King IMHO

I also think Elizabeth II will hand down the crown in the next 2 years

God Save Our Noble Queen and all that........and send The Blues victorious

*drumroll*

Better tell her about the new kit

I have it on good authority that Her Royal Highness was a fan of Thunderbirds too .....obviously Lady Penelope was her favourite character

Anyone know of any Football League or FA rules that would prevent The Royal Family buying BCFC ??

Probably not a good idea

She'd likely abolish the football club and turn St Andrews into a racecourse

Now the Qatari Royal Family ???.....now that's a whole different kettle of fish

The Royal Family generate a lot of tourism for this country as much as it pains me to say but the monarch is good for the country. Bit annoying though that they don't really pay tax as such though.

I believe HRH The Queen offered to start paying Income Tax on her wealth back in the 90's or even the 80's

I'm sure she gets a few rebates / deductible exemptions etc etc though

It depresses me deeply that we have a royal family. It's a sign that as a nation we still haven't grown up.

As for the Queen herself, I'm a bit of an agnostic. Her mother was a perfectly vile human being and her husband is a bit of a ****, but as for Lyzzie I have no strong opinions, except that I don't consider that by accident of birth she should have the right to "reign over" me, and i don't consider myself one of her subjects.

It also leaves us with the stupidest, whiniest, most infantile dirge of a national anthem in the world today, with the possible exception of the Star Spangled Banner.

(And before anybody pulls me up on it, yes I know the UK/Britain/England does not technically have a national anthem, but GSTQ is the de facto anthem, even if it is not in law.)

I use to be a loyalist purely because I hated the idea of a prime minister being head of state. Now I have come round to the view that the UK would be better as a republic.

I also don't buy into the 'they create wealth via tourism' perspective. France does extremely well through tourism being the most visited for tourism in europe.

Not having a monarch would still see thousands flock here because most of those that come choose to because of historical ties.

France has more to offer than the UK - Paris, the Alps (skiing), Cote d'Azur, Bordeaux etc (wine), better weather, better food, better people. All in all they don't need a catalyst to attract tourism whereas we do and that catalyst is the Royal Family.

Lowds France does have a lot of viable attractions but looking at a table of which countries our tourists come from doesn't support the theory of the Monarchy being the main reason for coming.

Most of the tourists to this country come from other european states many of which have their own monarchy. The Tower of London remains our single most visited attraction and that would be the case with or without a monarch as London itself is the main attraction.

Hear ! Hear !

There's no chance of the UK ever being a Republic

I'd much prefer to have a King or Queen as Head of State than an Ayatollah or an Iman
