The artist formerly known as Prince ....has died at his Minnesota home aged 57 Wasn't his greatest fan but a huge musical talent, very innovative and wrote some great songs including one of my own favourites, "Nothing Compares 2 U" which was a huge hit for Sinead O'Connor RIP |

To my mind, after Bowie, Prince is probably the most important influential exciting solo artist of the last 40 years. In his 'imperial' phase 1982-88 he produced work as CONSISTENTLY cutting-edge, as moving and as enjoyable as Beatles 66-70, Stevie Wonder 72-76, Bowie 72-80. That is the sort of company he belongs in, and as with those artists some people may only know 'the hits' and wonder if such praise is merited - but dig deeper and a whole world of wonder awaits.

It's often saddening to draw up a list of the so many talented musical artists of both recent and distant past who seemingly died at a fairly young age .....my list below contains many great artists many of whom died in their 20's and 30's , the rest died before 60 with the exception of Bowie and Donna Summer .....whether self inflicted or not, whether accidental or not, whether by foul play or not, still sad to see them depart this Earth My own sorrow of hearing the news of a musical icon pass away so young was never more wrenching than Motown's legendary Marvin Gaye, died in 1984 by gunfire at the hands of his own father , only 44 and the day before his 45th birthday Tammi Terrell, a gifted young Motown singer who had many hits with Gaye, suddenly collapsed in Marvin's arms on stage and died just over 2 and a half years later aged just 24 Buddy Holly (22) Elvis Presley (42) David Bowie (69) George Harrison (58) John Lennon (40) Freddie Mercury (45) Otis Redding (26) Paul Kossoff, a superb guitarist with the UK band Free (25) Jimi Hendrix (27) Kurt Cobain, lead singer with Nirvana (27) Janis Joplin (27) Brian Jones of The Rolling Stones (27) Jim Morrison (27) Amy Winehouse (27) Keith Moon (32) Jon Entwistle (57) Joe Strummer (50) Robert Palmer (54) Michael Jackson (50) Whitney Houston (48) Donna Summer (63) Teddy Pendergrass (59) Luther Vandross (54) David Ruffin of Temptations fame (50) Florence Ballard , one of the original Supremes (32) Jackie Wilson (49) Bon Scott of AC/DC (33) Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy and born in West Bromwich (36) Michael Hutchence, lead vocal of INXS (37) Ronnie Van Zant of Lynyrd Skynyrd (29) Stevie Ray Vaughan (35) Jeff Porcaro , drummer with Toto (38) Robbie McIntosh , original drummer with The Average White Band (24) The music as much as the men and women are never forgotten.....please add your own memories of artists by all means, covered as many as I could   Edited by PartisanBCFC, Apr 21 2016, 09:33 PM.

No, Pools , he let the paramedics take her to the hospital and it was discovered that Tammi had a tumour for which she had treatment for over the following 2 years or so but it was too far gone Nice subtlety though :break: Edited by PartisanBCFC, Apr 22 2016, 07:44 PM.

Other notable names from the music industry that died seemingly well before their time Bob Marley, reggae legend (36) Desmond Dekker (64) another huge reggae star of the late 60's and early 70's died in his South London home almost 10 years ago Two tragic victims of air crashes and both American country and western legends Patsy Cline (30) Jim Reeves (40) Motown singer Syreeta Wright, who did a lot of work with Stevie Wonder died at 57 Selena Quintanilla-Pérez (only 23) murdered by her own dishonest fan club organizer after the singer's family confronted her, one of the biggest music sensations to ever come out of the Mexican American community and achieved enormous success south of the border......A movie was produced about her life and death which arguably was the launching pad for the career of Jennifer Lopez, today one of the most famous celebrities in the US   |

How could I overlook the legendary drummer of Led Zeppelin John Bonham who hailed from Redditch and owned a farm in Worcestershire AKA The Beast , Bonzo Only 32 at death......had drank himself into oblivion the day before.....what an irony that he was the same age and suffered a strikingly similar fate to 'Who' drummer Keith Moon......two of the greatest drummers I can ever recall in my lifetime You're never forgotten , Bonzo and Keith 'The Loon' Also Sid Vicious (real name John Simon Ritchie) of the legendary punk group The Sex Pistols was only 21 when he overdosed on heroin .....at the time he was out on bail in New York City accused of the stabbing murder of his girlfriend Nancy Spungen and had also been ordered to undergo 'rehab' around that time Classic case of an incredibly rapid rise to fame and fortune turning sour so very quickly ....sometimes celebrity status can have such a devastating outcome Makes one wonder, eh ?? :break: Edited by PartisanBCFC, Apr 22 2016, 11:20 PM.

Some more that came to mind Certainly fit into the category of world famous musical acts Karen Carpenter , acclaimed everywhere for her beautiful soft voice ......died at just 32 from the eating disorder 'anorexia' of which there was little knowledge at the time of her death Maurice Gibb (53) and Robin Gibb (62) leaving Barry as the only survivor of The Bee Gees Younger brother Andy Gibb who had a brief recording career during the 70's was only 30 when addiction took his life An icon of 70's disco/dance songs and soft love ballads , Barry White died at 58 .......he had been chronically overweight for most of his life and diabetes and high blood pressure led to his death Singer Brian Connolly of the British band 'Sweet' died of heart attack at 51 , an addiction to alcohol had played a major factor in his death as well Marc Bolan of the highly successful British rock/glam band T Rex , died in a car accident aged just 29 and just one mile from his home in West London , among the mourners at Marc's funeral were Eric Clapton, David Bowie, Rod Stewart and Les Paul Two very prominent African Americans who were pioneers of the rise of black/soul music in the late 50's and early 60's......Nat King Cole (45) and Sam Cooke (33) who was murdered controversially, the original inquest calling the killing a justifiable homicide, Sam was responsible for hits such as "A Change Is Gonna Come", "Cupid", "Chain Gang", "Wonderful World", and "Twistin' the Night Away" and was also active in the American Civil Rights movement Unforgettable (pun intended) .....RIP  Edited by PartisanBCFC, Apr 23 2016, 07:24 AM.

The influential American punk band The Ramones have lost 4 original members since the New Millennium .....Joey, Johnny, Tommy and Dee Dee, ages ranging from 49 to 65 Although more acclaimed for acting and movies though both had a musical background , Judy Garland (47) and John Belushi (33) died after drug overdoses ........Belushi was one of the leading stars of the 1978 cult blues music flick 'The Blues Brothers' and they did in fact become a real band, cannot honestly recall if it was before or after the film release One of the most famous jazz singers of all time, Billie Holiday died at 44 after years of drug and alcohol abuse.....In a 1972 Motown backed film biography of her life "Lady Sings The Blues", Diana Ross played the role of Holiday And speaking of Diana Ross, she made a touching video and song here paying tribute primarily to Marvin Gaye but also to other Motown artists who left us so young , notably fellow Supreme Florence Ballard and four original members of The Temptations I had mentioned David Ruffin (died at 50) earlier Other deaths of former 'Temptations' that followed Paul Williams (34) Melvin Franklin (52) Eddie Kendricks (52) .....released a globally famous track as a solo artist back in the early 70's........"Keep On Trucking".....still played to this day especially in TV commercials Edited by PartisanBCFC, Apr 23 2016, 09:07 PM.

Prince managed to give Sinead her only hit and he even managed to make Sheena Easton lose her "goody two shoes" persona He did some great videos that were very stimulating if you get my drift   I wasn't a great fan of Purple Rain but I own his 'Diamonds and Pearls' CD and a hits compilation......'U Got The Look' (with the sexy Sheena) , 'Kiss' , 'Cream' and '1999' are among my favourite tracks of his He prohibited use (through copyright) of his music on mainstream media though.....and much of it is still closed off to the public today Strange that |

Prince was a weird character that's for sure but had a golden period when he was probably top soul artist in the world, even bigger than MJ! Rip to all those who left us with magic memories, KRO |
