News of the World

BIRMINGHAM City's pursuit of Bosnian striker Vedad Ibisevic has suffered a setback after his German club TSG Hoffenheim put a £10million price tag on his head.

Birmingham boss Alex McLeish must now weigh up whether to invest such a big chunk of his January transfer funds on just one player.

McLeish has sent his scouts to make a number of checks on 6ft 2in Ibisevic. The latest was in Bosnia's 1-0 World Cup play-off defeat by Portugal this week.

Ibisevic, 25, began his career in the USA and has also played in France and Switzerland.

He has a prolific scoring record for Hoffenheim. He hit 18 goals in 17 Bundesliga games last season and has five in 12 matches this term.

Quality player. Definitely has the potential to be worth £10m +, but a big gamble for a club like Birmingham at that current value.

He has all the attributes to play in the Premier League. Tall, strong and VERY quick, Ibisevic would be a dream signing.

One thinks though, that Marc Janko would perhaps be a more affordable target.

That's probably the reason behind the £10m+ price tag.

Well its NOTW so i would take it with a pinch of salt.

some things to remember McLeish said that he would cost £10M ore more when he ruled out Dzeko as he would cost well over £15M, but he never ruled out Ibisevic just said players like him would cost £10M plus.

Then he scouted him 2 times since that comment.....

Then he said that if a player cost £10M+ then provided he felt he was right player the cash may not be a problem.

I think we could pay upto £12M for the right player., but again would McLeish see Ibisevic as a gamble for that.

Maybe a deal at a lower £8M cash with addons that could take upto £12M and a nice sell on clause could do the trick.

I caught a bit of the game last week and he looked quite impressive.

For those who watch a bit of the Bundesliga, would he work well up front with either Benitez or Jerome?

Yep - and for a tall guy, he's got a phenomenal amount of acceleration.

Whoever we go for now will have an inflated price. Now everyone knows how much we have to spend.

If you went to buy a car and told the dealer you had £18k in your pocket, guess what he would want most of it.

Yeah, but you would not pay 18 grand for a car that was worth only 12. If no other club was interested in paying over the odds, the player involved would be sold around the market price. Cant see the club being taken to the cleaners, unless it is for some supa doopa name. :silence:

Vedad Ibiševię is the Striker we need.
10M is cheap for a 25 year old goal scorer, he could turn out to be another Torres.
Time Blues started to think and act like a Premiership club.

Yes but Yeungs camp can dress up the actual amount.

It dont matter if they have £40M or £80M to spend.

They said £20-40M inc wages (maybe they never meant that but as they said that even if lost in translation gives them now a chance to stick to that).

So £40M could be a Forsell £10M Yeungs camp could say they ment that has to cover wages and contract length in which case that could be like saying McLeish has £15-20M for fees.

That is exactly what they meant.

The thing is these players who have only made impacts over last few seasons and never played in the Prem wont be as clued up as those already playing for bigger clubs.

So their agents could actually sway them to sign for a club by having a word or two, they could say persuade the player to come to say a Bolton over Villa for instance by telling the player they would get much more games for Bolton than Villa and if they have a good season playing regular for a side then even bigger clubs would come after them and they wont be playing for a Man Utd etc in future if they are not getting games for a Villa for instance.

Of course agents will feed their players that and other stuff to sign for a club who really are showing the agents more cash.

So if we are prepared to offer best deal for the player and regular football i think we can sign some of McLeish's targets.

If not then i think plan B the back ups in Janko and Kone could almost certainly be signed.

I wonder if he or Zigic will come into consideration now that Kuranyi and Kenwyne are no longer viable options.

I think there are other Strikers like Klass-jan-huntelaar or Vedad Ibisevic which ECK is keeping a low profile moitor on and are not coming up on this forum.

Well look at Jones deal £11M with £3M addons ish... and £70K a week

Total potential package £28M i recon Ibisevic would cost less than that even under £24M Total. £12M deal (maybe £10M plus addons) could be enough and i doubt he would have £70K a week wage demands.

I would not be suprised if a Ibisevic would cost less overall than a Babel over 3-4 years.
