i think the issue McLeish may have had with Zarate was hat he was trying to build a unit and Zarate just didnt fit in. He didnt have the players to play with. Now we have the likes of Ferguson, Bowyer and hopefully Michel we will have players who can get the ball to him and he can do damage. He was sort of like having a Glen Hoddle.. Brilliant going forwards but not so great when defending which given our team we were much of the time. Our defence was much weaker so it required all players to shut down the opposition. Zarate couldnt do this. Hence McLeish use him as sub. The way he saw it there was no point playing talented players who coulnt get time on the ball if the chances were you were going to concede goals. We are now beginning to get players who can play a bit.

Zarate was simply a luxury we couldnt really afford in our fight against relegation 2 years ago.

Thats why McLeish didnt play him as often as we all, McLeish included probably, wanted too... he wouldnt track back or battle away, so couldnt be accommodated into the side.

He would be far more suited to our team now as we have the solid base, and the discipline from the midfield boys aswell.

It wont happen though, Zarate's above us now im afraid.

I dont agree....

I understand McLeish may feel players like him need time to fit in and adapt and hence Benitez not starting untill after a fair few games (injury recovery also played a part) and while thats ok at the start of the season.

When you sign someone in January the season soon flies by and with no pre-season, each week taken not starting a player because he is new to England is just another week wasted of his loan deal.

I think Zarate could have kept us up, i dont consider him a luxury player.

McFadden is more of a luxury as he is not suited or at best played wide, he is not a out and out Striker he would be best played in a free role like in a 4,5,1 or a 4,4,2 Diamond or as part of a wide attack in a 4,3,3.

Maybe we felt we could stay up and by not giving Zarate much exposure we could forced his asking price down if we stayed up who knows.... I doubt we would have paid £15M+ for him under Sully.

As for now, well Zarate may move in the summer if things dont get better but i cant see many sides paying over £25M for him especially Arsenal.

Would love to see him here again but cant see it happening well not for at least 2 years and then only unless 1) We become a big club challenging for Top 4-6 and willing to spend more than a Villa and Spurs on players. 2) Zarate does not make much of a impact and his value drops to less than £15M

About his tracking back i agree he never did as much, but then McFadden never much back then, although he does now but can be a case of works really hard for parts then does nothing in parts.

But Babel is also a simular player who does not track back, Kapo and Quincy never and when asked to do so, takes away their game....

Now with improved defence and quality/pace through out and Michel we could afford to use players who may not track back.

Could be on his way back to the Prem...

http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11095_5858812,00.html

I would love him back here, but with a valuation of £30/£35 mil being thrown around, its highly unlikely he'll be back here. :crying:

The inclusion of Chelsea and Man City means we have no chance anyway (I've been saying this for months anyway).

IMO

Chelsea - Possible But if the manager is to be believed they aren't signing this window
Man Utd - Unlikely, money being the issue
Arsenal - Possible but it's an amount that Wenger doesn't spend and his too similar to what they've got
Man City - Very possible, they could afford to sit him on the bench or swap with Robinho
Tottenham - Possible, they seem to be able to make signings whatever
Aston Villa - Unlikely, doesn't fit MON's model for his team
Liverpool - No chance unless they refinance
Birmingham - Too expensive
Fulham - Unlikely
Stoke - No chance
Sunderland - Not CL or even Europa as it stands
Everton - Money - No
Blackburn - No chance
Burnley - No chance
Wolves - No chance
Wigan - No chance
West Ham - no chance
Bolton - No chance
Hull - No chance
Portsmouth - No chance

The only teams I can see buying him are Chelsea, Man Utd, Arsenal , Man City , Tottenham , Aston Villa.

If he goes on loan then I think that opens up a few more teams including us, but if they are reluctant sellers then they will firm no loaners of the player.

I don't see him moving in this window.

could happen.......

If he joins one of those sides and fails to make a great impact who knows...

Look at Santa Cruz or Babel

If we had another loan and could loan another player from Man City it would not be impossible to get Santa Cruz on loan, if we ahd another loan maybe Babel on Loan.... however doubtfull with Liverpool lack of attackers and now injuries.

What i am saying is if a Top 4-5 club sign Zarate and from now till next January he does not make a impact or get games then who can rule out a loan to give him games.

As far as us seeing him in a Blues shirt on a permament deal well that depends on his impact, or lack of.

Zarate's club would want £25M+ for him. some rumours are that Arsenal are linked with a £17M move but i feel Lazio would want more and with Liverpool and Man City also potentially interested i am afraid while £17M may be a fee we can afford Zarate would rather move to a bigger club if given the chance.

If Zarate is to cost over £20M i feel we could maybe find as good for less if we shop about, certainly Zarate would not give us much compared to the first rumoured £35M Lazio was looking for.

Thats does not mean he wont play here a again....

Maybe this scenero could happen...

Zarate signes for s Liverpool, Arsenal, or Man City for £20-25M he fails to make a impact or get as many games as he would like, kinda like a Babel or Santa Cruz is now.

Then their is potential for us to loan the player, be that because he has failed to make a impact at big club, or they see him for future and want to give him more games for another club like Man City have in loaning us Hart.

Then yes we could maybe see Zarate here again, and if he was loaned to us by big Prem Club because he flopped, hey maybe that Club would be willing to sell him on for cheaper and if £15-20M i feel in 2 seasons we could spend that.

As far as signing Zarate within the next 18 months and for £20M or more, i recon we got next to no chance. :crying:

No More Zarate Threads.

No More Zarate Talk.

Just read....

SkySports.Com - Zarate Plans Lazio Stay

Quote:

Lazio ace Mauro Zarate has dismissed rumours linking him with a return to England.

Recent reports have suggested a number of Premier League clubs were keen on signing the former Birmingham City forward during this month's transfer window.

Zarate's future at Lazio has been the subject of conjecture following suggestions of a bust-up with coach Davide Ballardini

However, the 22-year-old insists he has no plans to leave the Italian capital and wants to stay with Lazio.

Asked about the transfer speculation, Zarate said: "I am telling the truth. I have not read anything. If I had, I would have replied."

"I will never leave Lazio."

Zarate has set his sights on helping Lazio stay up this season and win the Coppa Italia.

"Avoiding relegation and doing well in the Coppa are our priorities," added Zarate.

"It is a bad period for us and we clearly have to improve. Winning the Coppa Italia would be great though."

Meanwhile, Tommaso Rocchi is set to stay at Lazio, according to his agent despite being linked with a move away from the Stadio Olimpico.

Fiorentina have been credited with an interest in Rocchi, but the player's representative Oscar Damiani claims the forward will remain at Lazio after talks with club officials.

"I met Lotito and Tare yesterday and I think Tommaso will stay at Lazio to help the team in this difficult moment.

"There are many teams that have called from abroad, but there aren't the conditions for Tommaso to leave," he added.

That rules us out then....

Only now if a bigger club than Lazio come in would he ever consider, and even if Lazio wanted to sell a player can have a lot of say.

Arsenal wont pay the money needed to bring Zarate in.

Gallas - Part Exchange

Part exchange for Ashley Cole, that wouldn't have been small money.
