I like Babel, and I think he'd be a very valuable addition to the team.  I've sent him a message on Twitter asking him to sign.

**thumbup Great, well done. That's Babel sorted then.
Now onwards and upwards to our next signing.

Every little helps, as some dreadful money hoovering company put it.

The thing about Babel is that he's primarily a central striker, that's where he played throughout his time in the Ajax academy.  His finishing, and his speed were considered to be his key assets. (He comes from an athletic family, his sister is (or perhaps was) the Dutch 400m record holder.)

For Benitez to stick him out on the left wing and then pronounce him a disappointment, entirely misses the point.

FFS of course Ryan Babel is a winger, a right footed left winger to be exact!

Benitez forced him out onto the right wing after an injury spell in his second season without any game plan for the other players hence his lack of service from the midfield etc. It was only then that the Raffagaffa Spanish Waiter became disaffected with him and wasted him as a sub on the bench.

Anfield Profile

Explosive winger Ryan Babel joined the Reds in July 2007 in a deal worth more than £10million.

The Dutch international is a product of the famous Ajax youth academy, which he joined aged 11.

By the time he was 17 he was deemed ready for first-team action, resulting in a debut against ADO Den Haag in February 2004.

Just over a year later Babel won his first international cap against Romania when he came on as a substitute for former Chelsea winger Arjen Robben. Holland won the game 2-0, with the new boy bagging himself a goal. At just 18 years and 97 days, the strike made him his country's youngest scorer in 68 years.

Despite featuring at senior level, Babel was still eligible for the U20 World Cup in June 2005, at which he scored two goals.

From there, he was part of Marco van Basten's 23-man squad for the 2006 World Cup in Germany, though made only one substitute appearance against Argentina in the group stages.

In June 2007, the winger was one of the stars as Holland U21s won the European Championships on home soil. His two goals included one in the final against Serbia, helping him scoop man of the match.

Babel, who can play on either wing or up front, left Ajax with a record of 14 goals in 73 Eredivisie outings.

His Reds debut came on August 11, 2007 when he appeared as a second-half substitute against Aston Villa.

It wasn't long before our new No.19 was hitting the back of the net, making two Derby County defenders look silly before lashing home at the Anfield Road end on September 1.

Another nine goals followed in a satisfying first year including an audacious flick in an 8-0 Champions League drubbing of Besiktas.

Sadly, just as he was poised to set Euro 2008 alight with Holland, Babel was forced into the treatment room. An ankle ligament injury sustained in training brought with it the heartache of missing Austria and Switzerland.

There was further frustration domestically as the wide man struggled to hold down a regular place in Rafael Benitez's starting XI, and he was subject to intense speculation concerning a transfer away from the club in January 2010.

Babel considers himself a striker in the same way as McFadden does, that's where he'll want to play if he joins us.

Quote:

Babel said: "If I have to fill in up front, I would welcome the chance because that is where I made my name at Ajax. I broke into the team as a 17-year old striker and although we struggled that season, I recall scoring several last-minute winning goals.

"They signed Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and I had to move out to the left but, in my mind, I love being a striker.

"The problem is, Liverpool haven’t used me there. It isn’t always easy to switch to a new position without any preparation but I am ready for the challenge. Maybe my versatility has counted against me a bit. But this is a semi-final and I will give it everything."

I think most football teams expect greater flexibility in modern players regarding position and with squad rotation most players are happy just to play!

I think he has been shown that by his club Captain, Gerrard plays CM, LM and in the hole as support for Torres, even Rooney got shoved out on the wing by AF.

I think that primarily the days of a player only having one position are gone, maybe apart from a few players that have not caught on yet ;)

No I agree, the manager can't succumb to every player's demands and in respect of McFadden I'm somewhat glad he isn't played in his prefered position up front.

However, whilst versitility is advantageous for a team, in order to get the most out of certain players it is often best to play them in a position that they enjoy or feel comfortable playing. Babel is known to carry an ego and in joining a lesser side I feel he'll want more of a say in how he can benefit the side the most. I fear this is the only way to keep a player like Babel happy when playing for a club of Birmingham's stature.

To be fair when you talk of Babel as a player of ego, I don't see it, what exactly has he done to give himself an ego?

He came from the Ajax academy, ok so did De Ridder I believe! His first big signing was to Liverpool, where it would be fair to say either through poor management or whatever he has not fulfilled either his potential or indeed justified the 11.5 million the LFC paid for him.

As to coming to a club of our stature, well we finished 9th we are clearly investing with quality players coming in and more potential quality on the way. These are exciting times for Bluenoses and players understand this, why do you think N`Zogbia is keen to come to us!

Blues are an opportunity for Babel to set the record straight and prove he can play in the Premiership, he should be grateful. If he considers himself bigger than any club, I would suggest that club tells him to do one!

Babel considers himself a striker in the same way as McFadden does, that's where he'll want to play if he joins us.

Nail on the head as far as i am concerned.

Both Mcfadden and Babel have never been classed as proficient at what they do be that as a winger or a striker. They both remind me of the kid in the team that dont want to play where there told but want to be a striker. They both have flashes of genius which are broken up with moody looks and a disinterested attitudes.

The question is do we we want two Mcfaddens or someone who can cross a ball and will do what the manager says.

TBH I would take Babel anyday over Zamora but I wouldn't be unhappy to see hiom in a Blues shirt.

In responce to Ian, Babel's temprement at Liverpool is a factor I'm choosing to ingore in the hope and (not neccessarily qualified belief) that McLeish's management can sort out his inferred attitude at Anfield, but I firmly believe that that circumstance was just as much a result of the Raffagaffa's mismanagement of the young Netherlands international. I might be wrong, but for £8Mil I'm prepared to take the risk to gain the asset of his creative play which I'm sure Big Eck is already tuned into!

The end of the Day it's Parnu's and Alex's decision we must trust in them! **thumbup
