I would like to know whether our away following is really as poor as suggested on another football forum.

It is claimed we rarely if ever fill the away end or take up our full allocation in the prem.

It is also suggested that we have the smallest following from the big 4 west mid teams...

which forum was this?

I went to my first away game this season yesterday at Forest and although we took 5000 i thought the fans were very quiet for large amounts of the game.

So is our away support bad? feed.back

Depends where and when. A lot of people can't afford London prices at xmas for example.

Depends on game and when

This season so far

man U - sold out
stoke - sold out - smaler allocation but would have sold whole allocation if we had took it up
arsenal -sold out
forest - sold out
wolves - sold out
wigan - good following - maybe 3.5K at least 3K
everton - not so good - week before christmas
spurs - no
liverpool - just about sold out - smaller allocation
burnley - poor following
hull - good following

I know quite a few people who go away every game and while we may not sell out every away game (although we come close a lot) our away fans are louder than most and sing more than most.

Its the quality not the quantity.

Look at man utd - almost sell out every home game, thousands of fans...also the quietest fans same for liverpool, arsenal and chelsea.Villa also get bigger home crowds but are a lot quieter than us.

I think our away support is about average tbh.

i think theres certain games where we are very good - thought we were very good at Old trafford and Wigan in particular, and Stoke aswell. but there were also a lot were you get alot of moany fans who just wanna sit down and winge about everything!

we were very good in numbers at Forest, but very quiet for long periods of the game, all the people who wanted to sing were spread out. whereas at Burnley/Hull/Wigan everyone that wanted to sing could go the back and sing.

gotta disagree with Man u aswell Pooley, there away fans are very loud to be fair.

If you want an example of what we should have been like at Forest look at Leeds today- took 9000 fans and they was really loud, and didnt have an end full of moaners!

As for the other Midland teams, I think our support is about the same. The Villa have bigger away followings now, and are louder than they were, but this is only recent since Martin Oneill came in. A few years back they were taking a few hundred to places like Wigan and dont let any of them tell you any different :banner:

Stoke is an example we was banging on the metal at the back of the stand and we was asked by 2 people infront of us to stop banging it because it was giving them a headache! We decided to carry on as it was making a racket and was generating some kind of atmosphere.

:copno: why do these people bother with football matches.

i wish this whole "new image" for football would stop being pushed, and some people would just realise that for alot of people, going to an away game is about having a drink, a laugh, and SINGING. thats how its always been, and thats how alot of people still want it to be. theres a few away games that i go to, and afterwards i wonder what it would be like if the stadiums were full of people like the ones who ask you to sit down/not to swear etc.

probably something like this :silence:

Had one of those sitting infront of me at St Andrews last season. Told me to shut up everytime I started singing. So I always made sure I made as much noise as possible.

Villa also get bigger home crowds but are a lot quieter than us.

That's because they don't have a song to sing. :D

You can only chant Villa, Villa, Villa for a short while without sounding like you have special needs.

One Blackburn fan has taken exception to our reaction to our recent run and it led to an exchange of views regarding our general home attendances. At the time they were averaging 23,000 and we were something like 21,000.

I assured him that we would review it again at the end of the season now that we had a new board in place. For the record what is it at the moment?

I dont know wether you was at the game or not but I completely disagree with this, we sang the full 90 minutes practically none-stop and as far as I know we sold all of, if not the majority of the tickets, was a great atmosphere!

At the moment our average is 24,268 - which is the 15th best in the league. Blackburn's is 25,977.

More embarrasing IMO is that that average is also less than both Leeds and Norwich who are obviusly in the third tier of English football!
We also average less than Newcastle, Derby and Sheffield Utd of the Championship.

We have the third most empty seats after Wigan and Bolton aswell :ph43r:

unfortunately in terms of numbers and atmosphere our support has got worse for the last few years tbh.

that said we have never had really high attendances, our glory years with attendances have been more recent really, although i would say the atmopshere has acutually got worse and worse. I dont know why our attendances have never been that great.

Our attendance at everton wasnt too great tbf, we only took a small allocation

that said, we sang the whole game like Lukey H says. the atmosphere was pretty good there! when i went into this pub after the game, one of the everton fans said "you still think you are gonna win the league then?" :LMAO:

72-73. 4th biggest attendances in the country.

Reason for poor attendances over the years. Oooooohh I dont know? maybe the lack of success maybe.

Yeah impressive that yeah.

and yeah deffo partly due to lack of success, but one thing ive never got is that there is actually a massive potential fanbase!

i know clubs like Leeds were successful so maybe that explains why they have averagd more than us, altho its pretty impressive they can now, because that must be pretty hard to swallow. you go from watching your team challenging the champions league to suddenly having brighton at home, and huddersfield town being your big derby!

And how about Norwich? They dont have a hugley sucessful past, yet still get more than us now.

Im not trying to slag us off obviosly, but i just dont get our attendances! The 70s was our big attendance heyday I think (other than probably prewar?) then it went completely the other way in the 80s (altho was the same for a lot of clubs looking at the stats).

in terms of attendances today, i think our level of support has been pretty poor considering what we have achieved of late - altho i am optimistic that with the new board, and a few signings in Jan, we can start selling out St Andrews regularly.

Lets just hope we fill with die hards and not wingers

atmospherre was good but it was more directed to the numbers there rather than how good the atmosphere was

I think we always make a lot of noise and have seen other forums where supporters from other teams have commented on hiw vociferous our away support is - but i'm afraid it doeent live upo to the numbers it used to

and i must admit i pick and choose my away games now for many reasons - where i used to attend all many years ago

still fee lwe cpuld attract a hard core of 2.5K for away games minimum and we dont quite get that at the moment for all games but with success i think that will happen

That is only part of the picture.

Our away following is perceived as poor - but it's not entirely the fans fault.

It stems from the penny-pinching Sullivan days when they would only take the risk-free minimum allocation. So even when we would sell out at Arsenal, Chelsea , Man City, etc it was only the minimum - and the home fans think what a poor following.

There are games I have been unable to go to because of only taking the minimum and then selling out before general sale.

i dont usually go to the away games because they are far too expensive for the quality of the stadium and football team.

The quality of our team might not be amazing but with the effort they have put in this season surely that is priceless?

you cant blame the previous board for not being able to get a ticket - they never stopped you getting either away travel club or a season ticket both of which mean you would have priority for away tickets
