I'm getting quite frustrated that the next big thing is once again not deemed good enough. I've only seen him once in a pre season game and to be fair to him the entire team was woeful that night. When are we going to see a player genuinely break through? Should we now look at Mutch with a pinch of salt as he's lauded by the club but will be given away to a 3 rd division club? I don't blame anyone in particular at the club apart from the old board and Barry Fry. For all the good he did at the club he completely blew it by sacking off the youth structure and favouring a buying approach that worked so well!. Take a look across the city and feel jealous at the amount of young and local talent they've brought through and the fact they a good few have made the grade and gone on to international level. Every youth player we've put through have been sold or released to a lesser club and with the exception of AJ I would say that none have gone on and made me wish we'd kept them. Sorry rant over. I'd like to also note that a big part of my disapointment is with the players themselves for not having made it, if some are as good as we are told then it's their duty to themselves to maximise and excel their potential level. |

Take TJ's point. We are producing competent and able players, but players who are more suited to lower leagues. Time has a lot to do with it. Once Westley arrived the whole approach to recruitment changed. We have foreign imports now - unheard of before. We are knicking players from Man City and West Ham (?). The generation 16-19 that Westley inherited are the players mentioned most in this thread. And yes, if we were stuck in the Championship, they may have filtered through, but their future was not to be in the Prem. Good luck to all of them. Unlike Man Utd and Arsenal, our Ex-Academy players are still in football and not on the scrap heap. I think it is to do with time and timing. The players that Westley has headhunted are all under 17/18. It is from them, Westley's generation, that we should see breakthroughs. **thumbup |

It was only a throw away, but you're right on checking, it's Billy Paynter at Swindon, striker not CB. and my memory of Marcos going to Swindon appears to have been awry. |

Birmingham City: Alex McLeish asks for understanding on Krystian Pearce exit Jan 22 2010 by Colin Tattum, Birmingham Mail ALEX McLeish has defended the decision to let Krystian Pearce go to Huddersfield Town, saying: I don’t think he will come back to haunt us. The 20-year-old joined the League One outfit after McLeish sanctioned his release. Birmingham-born Pearce was considered a hot prospect as he emerged in the Academy ranks and starred for England at the under-17 World Cup. Join us for our FA Cup Live Blog tomorrow at 2.30pm. We will have reporters at the ground bringing you live match updates and banter. Join in at www.birminghammail.net/live He had loan spells at Notts County, Port Vale and Scunthorpe United, helping the Iron to the Championship via the play-offs. This season he joined Peterborough United temporarily but made only two substitute league appearances for them. After discussions with coaches, and consideration of his long-term plans, McLeish decided Pearce could leave. “At the end of the day as a manager you have to make judgments and I don’t think Krystian will be coming back to haunt us,” said McLeish. “If he does turn out to be a superstar then that will be a credit to him but we have covered ourselves with a massive sell-on clause and would make a lot of money. “Krystian was out of contract in the summer and I really do think it was the right move for him and us. “It’s a case of him having to take a step backwards before he can look to go forwards. “I can understand if there is some reaction to this because we all like to see home-grown players come through. “But as manager I have to do what I think is right for this club and I would hope that people trust the judgment of myself and my staff.” http://www.birminghammail.net/birmingham-s...97319-25657814/? |
