what throws this suspicious thing up in the air was all the hard work put in to clear the snow etc... why would they bother if they didn't want the game on?

To me this makes it look even more suspicious rather than less. Why would you go to all this effort of clearing snow and then deliberately leave covers off the pitch (in order to breathe) when a heavy downfall was forecasted.

Every length was made to get the game on but they decided to leave the covers off. Funny that?

also I thought it strange at the time when the stories about clearing the snow came about really early - what was it 5 days before the planned match ?, I had to check if they were playing a HOME game midweek rather than away at Cov.

If we have any pretentions to be a decent side we should be thinking we can beat teams like Portsmouth at any time and not just when they have players missing. Or don't we really think we are good enough?

Whats with all the conspiracy theories?

The fact is the referee decided that the pitch was unfit for play.

It isn't the first Premierleague game of ours to be called off and it wont be the last.

Question is, will those prawn sandwiches still be fresh for our next game?...

I thought so too untill i looked out the window and saw driving rain, on top of what had been seriously heavy snow in Portsmouth.

I live about a hundred miles from portsmouth and the rain we had Friday/Saturday morning was terrible so I wasn't surprised it being called off.

No conspiracy just global warming

id say there was a delay tactic there perhaps the old bill said you owe us 20k they turned on the sprinklers game off, a pitch can be drained very quickly just by forking the area and the water falls into the holes left, ive forked many a pitch on a sunday morning :ph43r:

Yes but thats what they have covers for isnt it?

1. They deliberately wanted it called off.

2. The groundmans was grossly incompetent for not looking after the pitch.
Now being as a groundsman knows how to prepare a pitch and would have studied the weather forecasts.

Why wasnt the pitch covered?

McLeish had no concerns over the match being postponed, so why do people still insist there was some sort of conspiracy.?

From the Sunday Mercury:

Alex McLeish: no complaints about Portsmouth v Birmingham City KO
Jan 17 2010 by Colin Tattum, Sunday Mercury

ALEX McLeish last night accepted the decision to call off Blues match at crisis club Portsmouth.

Referee Anthony Taylor postponed the Premier League clash due to a waterlogged Fratton Park pitch.

McLeish’s coaches went to the ground on Friday night when it became clear there could be a problem and reported back that the surface was in a bad state.

“They told me there was no chance, there was an injury risk if we had gone ahead,” said the Blues boss. “We have no complaints about the referee’s decision.”

Ideally Blues would have wanted the game on against the league’s basement side considering their impressive 14-game unbeaten run in all competitions. But instead Blues headed back to Birmingham to pack their bags for next week’s four-day training camp in Malta.

The thawing of recent snow and frost combined with heavy rain on the south coast turned the pitch into a quagmire.

Taylor said four factors were taken into account when he inspected the pitch with his assistants at 10am: “The the safety of the players, the safety of the match officials, if we started the game could we finish it, if we started would periods of the game descend into farce? While every effort was made by the club to ensure the game went ahead, I concluded that the conditions were not conducive for the game to go ahead.”

There were areas of surface water on either side of the pitch that Taylor felt would remain and be problematic, even if there had been no further rain.

Why was nothing said then on the friday night that there was a threat and to let us know there was going to be some kind of inspection???

If there was a problem on Friday night then it was up to Blues to inform their supporters that there was a potential problem. Everything that had been communicated was that everything was fine and it was going ahead.

At the end of the day McLeish as manager has to put his players first and if they are at risk they cant play pure and simple.

But what if your sayind there was a problem this shoudl have been communicated as soon as possible so people could check to see that it was on.
Many people drove a long way only to find it wasnt on.

Please dont tell me Blues let down some of their fans simply by not telling them what was going on. A warning message on the website is all it would take.

I agree that the only conceivable possibility is foul play.

See the guy that started this "conspiracy theory" on his blog---has now withdrawn it.

:LMAO:

Shame all the groupie types don't keep up with it.

I have spent a bit more time looking at this, as I said in my article yesterday I don’t normally write controversial articles.

It appears that there was a lot of snow on the pitch earlier in the week. As many of us are probably aware, snow is very heavy and to move it takes a lot of effort and energy. The snow was stored around the pitch, so it is reasonably likely even if it didn’t rain that much, (although there are conflicting opinions on that), the melting snow would have produced a lot of water. From looking at Portsmouth forums, it also appears that Fratton Park is notorious for poor drainage.

There are also a number of interviews kicking about where Alex McLeish  says that he had no problem with the postponement.

As a result of this, I thought it fair to put balance to what I wrote yesterday.

Kev

Well, that bandwagon must've made about six feet before it hit the snow.
