i know its a long way off but just out of interest ,saying that man u or man c won the carling cup . Villa would go into europa league in there place as long as both manchester clubs are in the champions league ?

So if Arsenal , Chelsea or Tottenham won the FA Cup and the runers up were allready qualified for europe of some sort , how far down the league would the europa league places go ?

Well, you can work it out yourself really.

Let's say the table finishes as it is at the moment:

1. Chelsea
2. Man Utd
3. Arsenal
4. Tottenham
5. Man City
6. Aston Villa
7. Liverpool
8. Birmingham

That'd mean that Chelsea, Man Utd, Arsenal and Tottenham got Champions League whilst Man City and Villa would get Europa League.

Say Man Utd, Man City or Aston Villa win the Carling Cup - that place would then be awared to Liverpool. (Highly likely)

Say then any one of the top 7 win the F.A. Cup - then their European place would be awarded to Blues in eighth position.

So yes, it's quite attainable.

If you win the Europa League, which Liverpool might (stop laughing at the back there), do you get to defend it and therefore awarding another spot to an English team?

just to give further headache, don't forget the FIFA Fair Play award which gets you into the lottery for a Europe spot :P

I think that is the case. Very good point.

So yes, it's quite attainable.

Actually:

The losing finalist for the domestic cup competition will still be entitled to be entered for the UEFA Europa League should the domestic cup winners qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

So in that sense if the FA Cup final was between Chelsea and Burnley, and Burnley lost - they would be in the Europa, not the eight placed team.

Who's talking about the Carling Cup ? :silence:

We're talking about the FA Cup runner up taking precedence over the 8th placed team. Try and read properly theres a good chap

If we carry on doing what we are doing and the new signings add some quality to our side we wont have to worry about everyone else ;)

Only 7 English teams can play in Europe, 4 in the Champions League, 3 in the Europa League, if an English team wins either competition then it does not create another place is takes a place away from the League.

So if Liverpool were to finish 4th but Everton won the Europa League then Everton would qualify for the Champions League not Liverpool.

I think...

To be on the safe side I hope we finish 9th.

I don't want the Europa (second class citizens) Cup for 2 reasons

1. It's played on Thursday nights so we will have 8 Saturday games moved to Sunday before Christmas.

2. With qualifiers Blues would have 12 extra games before Christmas and we are in no position to have a squad big enough to take that demand of games.

thats my biggest problem with the Europa league.

they should stop all this fitting Europa league in with TV, and just play on Wednesdays, which makes more sense for keeping games on Saturdays.

If a team qualifies for European competition through both winning a cup and league placing, the "spare" UEFA Cup place will go to either the cup runners-up or the highest placed league team which has not already qualified for European competition, depending on the rules of the national association.

This refers to the FA Cup only.

England and France are the only two countries wherein the Secondary Cup compettion winners qualify (-Carling) for a Europa place.

Simply, the losing FA Cup team, if the winner is already in Europe, gets the place. If the loser is also in Europe it goes to the Final Table next placed team.

On the Fair Play places. There are THREE.
But that depends on the NATIONAL league for each country. So England woulhave to see the Premier League placed in the Top 3 Fair Play Leagues around Europe to get an extra place.

You have no idea about how big our squad will be after this summer.
How can you proclaim such a thing as if it were true?

McLeish has already said that players like Michel are as much for next season as this. And we will have a bigger squad next year if we qualify for Europe, that's what CY has promised in funds, and I don't dispute that.

From wikipedia - I think its pretty accurate

Qualification for European competitions
As of the 2009–10 season qualification for the UEFA Champions League changes, the top four teams in the Premier League qualify for the UEFA Champions League, with the top three teams directly entering the group stage. Previously only the top two teams qualified automatically. The fourth-placed team enters the Champions League at the play-off round for non-champions and must win a two-legged knockout tie in order to enter the group stage.[18] The fifth team automatically qualifies for the UEFA Europa League, and the sixth and seventh-placed teams can also qualify, depending on the winners of the two domestic cup competitions. If one of the cup winners qualifies for Europe through their league position, the sixth-placed team in the Premier League will qualify for the Europa League. If both of the cup winners qualify for Europe through their league position, the sixth and seventh-placed teams in the Premier League will qualify for the Europa League. A further place in the UEFA Europa League is available via the Fair Play initiative. If the Premier League has one of the three highest Fair Play rankings in Europe, the highest ranked team in the Premier League Fair Play standings which has not already qualified for Europe will automatically qualify for the UEFA Europa League first qualifying round.[19]

An exception to the usual European qualification system happened in 2005, when Liverpool won the Champions League, but did not finish in a Champions League qualification place in the Premier League that season. UEFA gave special dispensation for Liverpool to enter the Champions League, giving England five qualifiers.[20] UEFA subsequently ruled that the defending champions qualify for the competition the following year regardless of their domestic league placing. However, for those leagues with four entrants in the Champions League, this means that if the Champions League winner falls outside of its domestic league's top four, it will qualify at the expense of the fourth-placed team in the league. No association can have more than four entrants in the Champions League.

You need a BIG squad.

Currently we have only eleven players who are good enough. That will mean McLeish would have to bring in a further eleven and ship out the current non first XI dross. I don't think even Tony123 would say Alex is that brilliant!!

So, it should be slowly, slowly. 9th this season. More additions in the summer and next Jan. Qualify for the Europa in 2011 , more signings in that summer.........and then we might, just might, be equipped for Prem and Euopa football.

As I say, we certainly won't be for next season.

But when we do, we will still have the nonsense of 8 rearranged Sunday games before Christmas.

Totally agree Lowds.

The last thing we want is the distraction of the Europa Cup next season. The emphasis has to be on consolidating our Premier League status. Just look at what it's done to Fulham's season.

As for the nonsense of Thursday night kick off's will we even get 9,000?

Don't exaggerate lowds.

We've already played 5 Sunday matches this season - BEFORE Christmas.

It is your opinion, NOT A FACT - that we only have 11 decent players, so I'm pretty pleased that the club isn't run on your opinion.

:LMAO:

Grumpy

I think all those teams who had an unexpected great season suffer big-style the next season when they are in the Uefa/Europa cup.

It started with Ipswich about 10 years ago and there have been plenty since.

You need a very good squad to cope. We need eleven of equal quality of the current XI to be there.

As for the Thursday nights I never thought about the attendances ( vs Locomotiv Riga on a wet November Thursday). My beef is that it will mean very little Blues for me, as we will be a Sunday club.

Even worse.

Had we been in the Europa Cup this season we would have 8 games rearranged due to the Europa Cup Thursdays and 3 rearranged due to tv.

Eleven Sunday games before Christmas.

This season Fulham had 9 Sunday games and 5 Saturday games before Christmas, of which only 4 were 3.00pm. Fulhams first Saturday 3.00 home game was 31st October. The europa Cup is a shocker for fixtures.

Theres only about 15 Sundays before Christmas. Obviously by playing Thursday we would not get that quantity of Sunday games picked by Sky?espn.

I'm trying to think....who was it that was criticising the fans for not having ambition? Thinking a Top Ten place was good.
Only last week as well, he was saying blues fans showed no ambition.....
....who was it lowds, can you help? :D

There you go Alfred, Fulham's fixyures. Don't just look at the number of Sundays but look at the entire amount of games. Two a week virtually.

As for ambition yes let's consolidate.

Strengthen the squad by 4 this Jan window
Top8 this season
Get rid of the dross and replace with 6 in the summer
Top8 by Jan11
Strengthen in Jan11 window
Europa spot at the end.

..........and :crying: no games for me 2011/12 season due to those Sunday rearrangements :crying:

I think eighth only goes into the Europa League if:

The FA Cup and Carling Cup is won by somebody NOT in the top four

AND

The FA Cup OR Carling Cup is won by a team fifth or lower

AND

Europa League is won by a team that have qualified for the Champions League or are FA Cup or Carling Cup winners or Europa League winners

AND

The Premier League finishes in the top three of the UEFA Fair Play League

Phew!
