I think alot of us were in agreement in the run-up to the transfer window that Big Eck would want to bring a creative midfielder to the team with Michel, but could the fact that hes also after Gardner signal that he is planning to resort back to 4-5-1? I wouldnt expect it at home, but I could imagine him maybe wanting to favour a packed out midfield away from home to get us holding onto the ball more?

I believe it more directly points to the fact that Blues current starting centre midfield pairing consists of two players (though playing brilliantly) who are nearing the end of their time playing at the highest level, and behind them is a player (Carsley) even closer than they are to that end.

AMc (in my opinion) views Michel and Gardner as younger versions of Bazza and Bow who will be able to cover, compete with, and eventually replace our current dynamic duo when time eventually (and unfortunately) catches up with them.

I believe it has nothing to do with reverting back to a 4-5-1.

This.

Although it will be nice to have better strength in depth to allow for 4-5-1 when it's tactically sensible to do so.

Both players targeted on potential and for the future and to add depth this season.

Again Michel is not a creative CM, he can pass the ball about but from our half, dont expect him to make runs up the pitch like Bowyer, he is more like a Flamini style player, maybe better at defending but not as good overall. But who knows he could be Michel has potential.

Gardener will be seen as a Utility player who can cover RM/RB and CM.

4,5,1 could happen if McLeish lands a Babel type player then we may see more of a 4,3,3 with Ferguson, Bowyer and Michel in midfield, also Fahey, Gardener and Larsson able to slot in also.

I think Carsley could be tempted into a coaching role during the close season - certainly I think the fans would love it if he was and Damien Johnson may be leaving

In central midfield, that'd hopefully leave us with Bowyer, Ferguson, Michel and Gardner. The versatility of Craig Gardner means that he can challenge Seb for the right midfield slot and also cover for Stephen Carr's right back position.

Gardner and Michel are the long term choices, but I can see Ferguson knocking around for at least another two years and Bowyer perhaps lasting one more.

Your on the money Brummiebear! :applause:

Mc'Leish has just offered an extra £10,000 in personal terms to Ryan Babel and a guarantee for regular play as a central forward (in response to which he which he is now reported in The Times to be moving to Birmingham) :applause: would suggest a 4-5-1 formation, or more excitingly Babel lynched forward with Jerome on his left and Chucho on his right in a 4-3-3 formation!

just read the article and think it's complete rubbish!

so here's a manager who has said time and again that dressing room harmony is vital for any signing yet the Mirror have an 'exclusive' saying that he's guaranteeing to play Babel as a centre forward and to top that he's offering him and extra £10k per week!

come on, can that really be believed. that's just poor journalism. also strange there's a number of papers reporting this 'exclusive'!

i'm not saying we're not going back in for him but those terms just don't ring true at all...

I hope not. I don't think so.

Ferguson and Bowyer cannort go on all season together. They are ageing and either could tire/stagnate, either could get injured and either could get a suspension.

Michel and Gardner will be cover and/or replacements as the season goes on. Perhaps they may develop to become first choice, let's hope so. Onwards and upwards.

The 4-5-1 will now be a great option when we're a goal up at Stmford Bridge or Eastlands with 20 mins to go.

We were looking for creative type players we have been linked with few McGeady was his number 1 choice. Michel is not a creative player but a good midfielder to pass the ball in the current Ferguson role. Link defence and midfield. If Ferguson gets injured and/or tired we start to look quite threadbare. With Carsley injured we dont have any cover for this vital position.

Gardener would be a utility man who given our squad would be extremely useful has a lot of capability and would probably fit in to our current wage structure.

I thought Gardner was a Bowyer type - wins the ball, box to box, and a good eye for goal. feed.back

That didn't occur to me, I just thought it was an incredibly corny and cringy thing to say...

But then I suppose he was taken with the moment.
