I was recalling this great game with my two lads the other day. Sadly never seen any highlights of the match from that day to this. Anyone got any access? Did blues play in all red or all white? I `m not sure which also did Geof Vowden play in a number 7 shirt as the 8&10 were green and Page. Johnny Vincent was dropped to the bench i remember that.
There wasnt any trouble between the two sets of fans yet in the two Villa derbies that year When we done the double!!! There was wholesale carnage!
Big Fred was brill but Barry Bridges went awol and the fans fave Trevor Hockey was out injured! The Baggies robbed us and won one of the dourest finals V Everton four weeks later. It couldawouldashouldabeenus!

I was there, only 9 at the time and really don't remember that much.

I sat in the Trinity Road stand,
Blues played in red
They scored first at the Holte End - a Jim Herriot blunder
They scored their second at the Witton End.

I was just 15 but had left school so unlike the youngsters of today was working full time!!
Your so right it was the sixth round Blues played in White! Herriot fumbled a Bobby Hope free kick for high kicking(NOT) by winston Foster and Astle pounced on the follow up.
Thanks dominguez for the Pathe lead.
Its been emotional!!

Why were both teams in White?

Chelsea were in yellow shirts, blue shorts

Have no idea why Blues wore all white

In fact I'm pretty sure that was the only ever match in which we wore those white shirts with the distinctive blue collaring......the kit was supposed to bring good luck (which it did v Chelsea) and we wanted to wear them in the semi final v Albion but The Baggies won the coin spin so they wore their 'lucky' away white and we had to wear all red..........Albion had changed to white as well in their away replay tie at Liverpool and also wore white in the Final, the only difference was they went with red socks because lots of folks still had B/W television sets......If memory serves me well, WBA had also won the coin spin for the Final as Everton had to wear their change of yellow shirts and blue shorts but Albion got permission to wear the white again instead of their traditional navy blue and white stripes.......Maybe maulley can shed light on that

Strangely enough we wore an all white kit (but no blue collar this time) when we played Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the FA Cup just two years later .....and even more bizarrely Chelsea again wore yellow and blue even though they were the home side and their 1st choice blue shirts and blue shorts would have been more logical

3rd Round this time and they got revenge by beating us 3-0......they would in fact go all the way on and win the Cup for their very first time beating Leeds United in a thrilling replay after a very entertaining 2-2 draw at Wembley.......that was the first ever Cup Final at Wembley anyway that ended up drawn

I was at the Chelsea v Blues game......One of my first excursions on a coach with the BCFC Supporters Club .......I remember getting the coach real early in the AM from the old Emmeline Street entrance where the club was located

Stamford Bridge was really tacky back then.......You might recall they had an end called 'The Shed'.........The pitch had a huge racetrack around it.....you could barely see the players or action....No wonder this bloke at the start of the clip had binoculars :P although as the narrator said, that was simply an early example of authorities and Police checking for crowd hooliganism which had started to rear it's ugly head ....before the days of CCTV of course

Oh ! and we had worn all white at Villa Park that season too.....0-0 draw in front of 51,000 fans or so and we played them off the park but just couldn't score .....I guess that was our away strip that year but in the two previous 'derbies' at Villa we had worn our usual blue / blue / white

Villa tried the 'all white' method too in a Blues v Villa match at St Andrews in 1968/69 (although they had to wear their mightily famous baby blue stockings :P ) .....Didn't do them much good.....we hammered them 4-0 which still remains our record victory over them to this day......Vowden, Vincent, Greenhoff and Summerill were the scorers

In those days if there was a colour clash then for cup games only both teams had to play in their change kits. This did not apply to league games. Hence why everton v WBA final in 1968, our semi against WBA and quarter final against Chelsea we are in different kits.
If both change kits clashed then 1 team still could not play in first choice kit but had to play in third choice kit which is why we played in red against WBA as they won ***** for second choice kit.
This rule changed around 1973/74.
