Obviously we all ought to be fully familiar with how the song was adopted during our run to the FA Cup Final in 1956 when Alex Govan started singing it. However, today my girlfriend asked me something that made me think. The first verse has obviously been adapted to suit, but does anyone know anything about how and when these changes were made. Being a History and Politics teacher she was particularly wondering about the line "we're often partizan" which would suggest that we are always arguing amongst ourselves; I suggested it is probably more the fact that we are strongly united against the ememy vi*la and all others. It did make me think though, having sang it all these years, when was the current version created? Original first verse: Ev'ry road thro' life is a long, long road, Fill'd with joys and sorrows too, As you journey on how your heart will yearn, for the things most dear to you. With wealth and love 'tis so but onward we must go- Steve |

I've heard people sing "We're off to partizan", as if it is somewhere you go to (maybe on your hols!) |

I used to sing that when i was nipper! I always thought "where is partizan and why are we going there?" ha! As for the 'partizan', doesn't it mean 'mixed'... So our results are often up and down ? A typical bluenose trait I thought of knowing were sometimes rubbish, but at least we'l give it our all and 'keep right on'. Thats the way I read into it anyway... feed.back |

I just wish we'd sing it SLOWER, not at 100 miles an hour, sound so much better sung slow. Back in the day, well, 70's and early 80's we always sang it slow. Wish we could get the message across to people somehow to sing it that way. |

There was nothing like being at a Blues game in the 70's and to hear Keep Right On ringing out around the ground - - definitley better when sung slower |

Ha! As a kid, I always thought it was "off to partizan" too. Having heard of Partizan Belgrade playing in Europe, I thought it was to do with that! I definitely agree with the need for a slower rendition. Would be nice to think we could somehow recreate that. Not sure how though? Steve |

of course it is about being all on the same side supporting our team, but I quite like the idea of going to Partisan (note the 's' not a 'z'), a bit like 'its long way to tipperary' lol |

yeah I thought it was to do with Partisan Belgrade, thought we might have played them in europe before my time. Also before my time is the slow rendition of Keep Right On. Maybe the club get hold of the music and play it through the tannoy at the start of the game (after Mr Blue Sky has finished, say) then stop it just as the game kicks off. A bit like how wolves do 'high ho silver lining' then cut it out and they sing 'wolverhampton'. Maybe that could work in making it slower...? |

yes.....Partizan Belgrade, except we never went there. We're often partisan......... how about we're occasionally partisan, or we're partisan now and then when we are in the mood, or we're usually partisan but you know how it is......... Whatever, it makes no sense. |

The words have been debated so much, but here goes again. I looked them up on various fan forums, and selected the one that meets with how I hear and sing the song. The road through life is a long, long road. There'll be joys and sorrows too. As we journey on, we will sing this song for the boys in royal blue We're often partisan, la la la. We will journey on, la la la. Keep right on to the end of the road, keep right on to the end, Though the way be long, we will sing this song for the boys in royal blue. Though you're tired and weary still journey on 'till you come to your happy, abode. Where all you love and been dreaming of will be there, where, at the end of the road. Birmingham, Birmingham, Birmingham. We're often partisan, just means that we are regularly and hugely loyal to our team. Partisan as defined by dictionary.com: an adherent or supporter of a person, group, party, or cause, esp. a person who shows a biased, emotional allegiance. Where the partisan came from.......not sure, but here are the words to the original Harry Lauder song: Verse 1 Ev'ry road thro' life is a long, long road, Fill'd with joys and sorrows too, As you journey on how your heart will yearn, for the things most dear to you. With wealth and love 'tis so but onward we must go- Chorus Keep right on to the end of the road, keep right on to the end, Tho' the way be long, let your heart be strong, keep right on round the bend. Tho' you're tired and weary still journey on, till you come to your happy abode, Where all you love you've been dreaming of will be there at the end of the road. Verse 2 With a big stout heart to a long steep hill, We may get there with a smile, With a good kind thought and an end in view, We may cut short many a mile. So let courage ev'ry day, Be your guiding star alway- Repeat Chorus twice |

When I first started watching Blues (1966) KRO started off with Keep Right On To The End Of Th Road . The "As we Go Through Life,,,off to Partisan etc" came sometime in the 70's and I,M not too sure that's when it started to get speeded up ......and sadly now is screeched. From my memories of the anthem, to the now "what's that awful song you lot sing" I get asked when we are on live tv, is a shame. When sang as an anthem it is truly a wonderful atmospheric song. |

Eh? wrong! As you go through life it's a long, long road. There'll be joys and sorrows too. As we journey on, we will sing this song for the boys in royal blue We're often partisan, la la la. We will journey on, la la la. Keep right on to the end of the road, keep right on to the end, Though the way be long, Let your hearts beat strong, keep right on to the end, Though you're tired and weary still journey on 'till you come to your happy, abode. Where all the love you've been dreaming of will be there, where, at the end of the road. Birmingham, Birmingham, Birmingham. |

Harry Lauder wrote the song in memory of his Son, who was killed in World War One. My mate always thought (and this genuine) it was 'We're off to park the van'. |

wheaty is correct about Harry Lauder and his son talking of getting words wrong when my son was little he thought 'we'll support you evermore' was 'we'll support you in the war' |

That's the version we always sing as well, isn't one of the other threads on the forum called 'As you go through life' as well? Meaning that's definitely how the songs supposed to start? {as far as the lovely people who run the board are concerned anyway!} :bluzz: |

Thanks for that! That's what i was interested in really; having started going down in the late '80s as a kid, I have always known it as it is now. It's funny how things change over time. If it did used to start with "Keep Right On" then it would be nice to identify when the verse before was adopted and adapted. I wonder if it will be that different in another 30 years when we are a regular "big five club" |

great point steveg. Obviously I was at St Andrews during the 70's when [I think] the now first verse was introduced. There are many on here as old, and older, than me who witnessed the start of the new 1st verse - "As you go Through Life, it's a long long ...etc". Why and how did it come about?.........it wasn't sung in the 60's / early 70's. |

It got speeded up when Mike Hellawell or Louie Donowa were playing and got slower when Trevor Aylott or Carl Richards were on the field. |
