Good review of Robbie by Alex.

The best thing he says is ignore him but I doubt our fans will be able to resist having a go at him.

SAV SIDESHOW A NO-NO

It may be music to the ears of Derby midfielder Robbie Savage that other than Rams fans he has got at least one more supporter - Alex McLeish.

But the "colourful" Pride Park man may also want to know that the Blues boss and his charges will also refuse to get involved in any shenanigans with Sav when the two sides' FA Cup fifth round tie gets underway at 3pm on Saturday.

It's fair to say Savage's all-action style has won him just as many enemies as it has admirers but Big Eck is firmly in the group that are full of respect for the former Blues man.

He told bcfc.com: "I like Robbie and think he brings a bit of colour to the game. He's had a good career.

"He's a guy who rallies his team and a guy who annoys the life out of the opposition - he could start a fight in an empty barn, Robbie. He's good at that but our players have got to have the maturity not to take the bait at all if Robbie is up to any mind games tomorrow.

"We've got bigger fish to fry than for my players to be having a spat with Robbie and getting involved in that. For me that would be taking their eye off the ball and not being professional. But Robbie will use all his experience, and quite rightly because I would do it as well.

"He's a good player and he's been playing well for Derby and he and Nigel Clough seem to have a great player/manager relationship."

Savage wasn't given the warmest of goodbyes when he left Blues for Blackburn in January 2005 saying he wanted to be nearer to family in Wrexham.

Manager McLeish knows that some fans won't have forgiven him for that but said that jeering the midfielder would play right into his hands as it's what he expects.

He added: "I think he thrives on that Robbie and that's what motivates him. It would be better if the Blues fans never shouted his name at all and just gave him a silent reception. I think Robbie would be surprised with that and not play as well!"

I agree with that 100%... it would throw him to not receive any reception from us at all... but theres no way that will happen

I know with all the past history some fans will never forgive him but at least we had his best football years out of him. Nice round of applause would really screw with his head lol!

got a lot of respect for the bloke to be honest - he is a **** at times but as shown in the recent radio interview with the local journo when he needs to stand his ground and look after his team mates he will.

I totally agree with both sentiments.

Boo'in still shows we've got feelings for him. And no two ways about it, he's gonna be out there to wind the lads up anyway, to affect our game.

Here's Savage's side of things from his Daily Mirror colum today:

Why I deserve to get a decent reception from Birmingham fans this weekend By Robbie Savage

Published 23:03 11/02/10

When I run out for our FA Cup fifth round tie on Saturday, the 5,500 Birmingham fans packed into Pride Park will rise to their feet and applaud me for three years of hard graft and great times at St Andrews.

Well, in my dreams.

Instead, I know that yet again I will get absolutely hammered by the Blues supporters because of the way I left for Blackburn in 2005.

It's gutting for me because after two Player of the Year awards, a Midlands Player of the Season honour and all the work I did for the club off the field, I think I deserve more.

Yes, I regret going the way I did. I have to plead guilty to wanting to play for my boyhood idol, Mark Hughes, at Blackburn.

And yes, I probably didn't make things easier with my celebrations at St Andrews after I scored for Rovers there in April 2006... but that was just an emotional response to the abuse I was getting on the day.

One thing I won't apologise for is telling Steve Bruce I wanted to move North to be closer to my mum and dad, who were poorly at the time, in Wrexham.

At the time, a paper pointed out that St Andrews was actually nearer to their house than Ewood Park.

But what they hadn't taken into account was that I was then living in Stratford-upon-Avon and the drive home to my parents took me two-and-a-half hours. At Blackburn, I could move to Cheshire and be back in Wrexham in 45 minutes.

I'd love to be able to go back to St Andrews once I've retired and be introduced onto the pitch to a standing ovation.

But I accept that, even though I made it up with Steve Bruce, David Gold and David Sullivan, the fans will probably never let bygones be bygones.

It's ironic because one of the things I loved most about playing in Birmingham was that you could go out in the city after a match and half the people would want to buy you a drink while the other half were calling you a w*****.

If I had a night out there now I'd go home thirsty and with my ears ringing!

The bitterness will never take away how I feel about Birmingham. It's a brilliant club with - yes - brilliant fans. I'll never forget the night we beat Villa for the first time in 16 years and I don't think they will either.

That's why I'm so delighted to see Alex McLeish and his lads doing so well and I wish them the best of luck for the rest of the season - after Saturday.

It says a lot about how well Birmingham have done this season that the match isn't being televised live. Clearly, the TV people don't think we are capable of causing an upset.

But I think we definitely can. In the last three games we've ended Forest's unbeaten away run, got a tough point at Sheffield United and beaten the league leaders 3-0.

If we play on Saturday the way we did against Newcastle, those Birmingham fans will have another reason to hate me.

Not that we need a reason to hate him this comment just makes me feel so angry and hope that Bowyer teaches sav a lesson :)

McLeish talking about keeping a professionally clear head in the face of Robbie wind-ups.

Good idea - Yes - I can see Ferguson and Bowyer turning the other cheek.

I know this is getting boring but i will say it again, the second most influential player I ever saw in a blues shirt after TF.
I will definately be applauding him as he comes off after we win.

Articles like this dont help the guy though IMO.

Whilst we all know he is a character on and off the pitch, and we all respected him for what he done for us (no two ways about it, he was a big part of us establishing ourselves in the Prem when he joined).

He outlines perfectly why he will be hammered, and should understand he doesnt deserve any different.... maybe fans may have forgiven him if he had just gone the way he did... then he decided to celebrate like a little idiot when he scored against us, further inciting the fans.

He doesnt deserve anything from us the way he left us, slyly and using excuses. Why couldnt he have just been honest from the outset and the whole commotion of the departure wouldve been far easier to take

That is exactly what Savage wants

Why not take the advice McLeish is giving, i.e. ignore him with silence, because Savage (according to McLeish) thrives on being booed, which makes him turn in a better performance.

But perhaps it's more important for you to boo 'just cos it's fun', even if that harms the team

No complaints from me with his article. I give him his dues, seem's like he's finally grown a pair.

He was an inspirational figure at the Blues and will be remembered fondly by me for his impact and ability to turn a game with a crunching challenge. His exit from us, is probably going to stay with him forever and be his biggest regret in his career. Had he have gone without all the nonsense surrounding his departure he'd have been held in high esteem by many for the rest of his life and probably would have been classed as a legend too.

I won't be booing him tomorrow, a waste of time... I would love it if everyone actually applauded him, he'd probably spend the entire game dazed by it and in a state of shock ;)

He's honest, and he was a great player for us. I'll never forget how he was absolutely everywhere when we beat Villa 3-0. I wouldn't boo him, but he shouldn't go out of his way to try and endear himself to us either.

:applause:

Well said Robbie.

As far as I'm concerned it was Steve Bruce and David Sullivan that brainwashed a lot of the susceptible fans about him. Never let us down did he? Always gave us 101% It was sad the way they dragged out his transfer and all the animosity that grew over the weeks.

Good luck Robbie (after our match is resolved that is) and keep telling the truth as you do.

I like Sav - I'd applaud him. A true iconic Blues legend.

Hated him when he was still at Blackburn, but both player and club have moved on and it's time to be respectable.
