West Ham are hoping to jump ahead of Birmingham City in the race to sign Ecuadorian striker Christian Benitez .

The 23 year-old striker, known by his nickname Chucho, is on loan at Birmingham City until the end of the season. Although he has only scored one goal so far for the Blues, Birmingham boss Alex McLeish has been impressed by his contribution to the team.

The St Andrews boss said, “I like him, and while he’s not been prolific in terms of scoring his ¬assists have been tremendous.

“He makes intelligent runs and sees people and he looks dangerous.

“At the moment he is still a loan, and we have not got to make a decision until May.”

West Ham owners David Sullivan and David Gold are considering this hesitation a green light to make a move for the player, according to The People. Benitez was taken to Birmingham by Sullivan and Gold, but they are now keen to bring him to Upton Park to boost West Ham's striking options

We have a swear filter on this board for a reason. maybe people could try expressing themselves without swearing and childish personal comments.

My understanding is that the Chucho purchase became a loan because of his previous knee injury and that providing this did not recur, BCFC would buy him at the end of the season.

If we want to keep him, he's ours and there's &&&& all West Spam can do about it.

This is just DS knowing that he'll get column inches if he mentions Blues!

It would interesting to see McLeish's view of him. I think Sully is looking to eye up a bargain.

If Benitez went he could well become a player that would come back to haunt us. The front two arent quite getting the service and wont until we have real quality down the wings.

It's a tricky one I want to keep hold of him but with the number of goals he has scored it is becoming more difficult. It just isnt enough based on his original price tag. For 5m I would keep him but thats as far as I could go. He has been part of a history making side and so must be congratulated. But at the end of the day it's all about goals in his positon. 5m and maybe a good bonus structure.

I think Sully might try another loan... come to West Ham for another 1m a year and we will see. Which I can see being a good deal fotr West Ham. If he has a run of form and I think he has 10 goals a season in him.

Sully isnt stupid he does know how to run a football club on a shoestring.

It's an agents story designed to stimulate us into making a decision.

I think he is worth the money as he is of the quality that we want and I believe that it would take him a season to settle in.

All I can see are quotes from Eck saying how much he rates him. Nothing from West Ham at all. Speculation.

JPA took ages to settle at villa but became a good asset to them. I think Benitez is settling much quicker than he did, but there is defo still more to come from him. Its a fair bit of dough but worth the gamble imo.

Yeah I think he will be better next season, I would keep him , some of the things he does are world class... just needs to brush up his finishing. I think with a full pre season under his belt with our squad, and also the fact we should have more quality next year, he could prosper.

IS it really only me who thinks that the 7 million price tag is laughable ???????

Where are these 'world class' things he is supposed to do ????

He does not track back.
He constantly gets knocked off the ball - and always will
He does not have a great first touch
He s not as quick as people think
He has only scored 3 times

He has provided a couple of valuable assists, but FFS you would expect that in 20 games.

I just CANNOT see AT ALL what some of you see - especially the 'world class' comments from some of you.

PLease help enlighten me

EDIT: Sorry - just seen the 'Benitez' thread - seems I am not the only one!!

As I understood it, Benitez had no history of a knee problem. It was our physios that spotted a weakness that could be a future problem. Or, more probably, Sully dreamt up the problem after having second thoughts about the price tag! ;)

we seen how much we miss he's flair against west ham midweek, he is a real pain to oppositions defence and can beat any defender with he's skill we must keep him if he starts to finish he'll become a great striker next season.

Was it Chucho's agent who said he wouldn't do business with us again because of how Sullivan cut him out of the deal or something? If so why would he go to Sullivan?
