OK... when you have nothing much to do on a Sunday morning, and the posts on the forum are discussing players and their value to the team... the impact or contribution they make, the goals they have scored or haven't scored... I thought it might me inetersting to find out which players seem to have most influence on the team's goal-scoring.

Thinking about how that might be done (without getting too anal about it) - I simply looked at the goals we have scored this season (30 in all competitions... so it wasn't too onerous!) and look at who was on the pitch at the time. Sounds simple... but we also need to consider the amount of pitch time each player has had too (to make it fair). That wasn't quite so easy, so my table below is only for strikers and midfielders.

What do the numbers mean?
Well, to be honest, nothing! APART FROM being a [relative] measure of a player's impact. So before you start tearing holes in the numbers, they are simply an objective way of comparing the players!!

Play Factor A measure of the ammount of playing time for each player (starts and sub appearances) during games in which we have scored.
Goals when on Pitch The number of goals scored while that player was on the pitch
Impact A relative indication of the impact or influence the player has on the team to score goals. Derived from the play factor and whether the player was on the pitch when a goal was scored.

Here's the results (ranked by Impact... most to least from top to bottom). Note... this DOESN'T take into consideration the goals they have scored, but needless to say, if they DID score in a game they must have been on the pitch to do it!!!

The numbers after the player name:[Play Factor]...[Goals when on Pitch]...[Impact]

Strikers
Chucho...2858...26...0.91
Phillips...862...7...0.81
Jerome...2926...22...0.75
O'Connor...996...6...0.60

Midfielders
Gardner...199...3...1.51
Michel...99...1...1.01
Carsley...764...7...0.92
Bowyer...3657...30...0.82
McFadden...3391...27...0.80
Fergusson...3857...30...0.78
McSheffrey...399...3...0.75
Larson...3258...24...0.74
Fahey...1858...10...0.54
Tainio...665...1...0.15

Remember this is NOT psuedo-scientific... and I am NOT having a go at your favourite player if he doesn't appear at the top of the list. Facts are facts... so don't shoot the messenger!

similar to what I did in the benitez thread - yet the small minded people on here decided to ignore what I put and instead jumped to the conclusion I was critisising him

The facts still don't disguise our terrible record in frony of goal, something which we have to sort out as a team.

It's funny how people aren't all piling in to slate certain members of our team when presented with facts. Good work with the original post btw.

Palace just scored again. Tee hee...
