I've been to every Blues Premiership fixture at Ewood Park as I only live 15 minutes from the ground [the only advantage of living in the NW is the number of local grounds to follow Birmingham]...it's quite astonishing how the dynamic of these matches has changed with the advent of McLeish and Big Sam...Blackburn were always the footballing side and have now become long ball merchants...last night we passed it around like Arsenal for the first 60 minutes...although like the Gunners on occasions, we failed to find the penetrative final ball and tried to pass it into the net...for all of our movement on and off the ball we scarcely created a clear cut chance in the entire match...then in the final quarter we faded badly with the team looking tired and ready for the summer recess...I had hoped we might close in on Villa and get somewhere close to 60 points, but we may only just scrape past 50 now... the real positive from this season for me is that Blues are - for the first time since the time of Jim Smith - an attractive side to watch...the heart of the team is Barry Ferguson who sets the tempo...we do need more goals, but hopefully Kris Boyd will be the answer to that perennial question... my ratings for last night are: HART 5 [strangely lethargic performance, erratic kicking, should have got a firmer hand on Dunn's first goal] CARR 6 [caught in possession and out of position, but finished strongly] RIDGEWELL 7 [solid in defensive and tidy going forward] JOHNSON 6 [looks tired from long first Premiership season, prone to errors at the moment] DANN 7 [stepping up to cover his partner] GARDNER 5 [worked hard but lacks finesse, would probably be more effective centrally] BOWYER 5 [another feeling the pace, his game seems to lack some of the bite of prior years] FERGUSON 7 [did some of his best work covering defensive frailties, passing accurate as always] FAHEY 3 [totally invisible] McFADDEN 7 [worked hard and determined not to be subbed, wall parted like the Red Sea for his free kick] JEROME 5 [never in the game] :Blues: |

We have the basis of a good side - that 15 game unbeaten run proved that. However, in January, investment was needed on a decent striker and a creative midfielder as we were sadly lacking in that department. The backline have been our bedrock this season but now it has started to crack, we haven't got the ability at the other end of the pitch to turn things around and these were always the major concerns WHEN the defence and goalkeeper started to falter. I am just relieved we have 44 points on the board. With some tough games coming up we'll do well to finish in the top ten now. |

I getting concerned that we have now shipped 6 goals in the last 3 games with Arsenal on the way on Saturday. If some players need rotation then we should give them that, easier said than done i suppose. I would not feel comfortable going into a game without RoJay or Dann. I would like to see Micheal given a few starts and go back to Bentiez Jerome up front. Fahey needs dropping What has happened to Larrson? He is double the player of Gardener, and half the size.. |

That is my concern as well. Arsenal have the smell of the title in sight - they are full of confidence. I fear that we could be in for a mauling on Saturday. |

Thanks Bluemood for an excellent report. Personally I think it's clear that the season is catching up on a number of players and in particular we don't have the defensive solidity of earlier in the season. Now this in my mind is nothing to be critical of bearing in mind that as a team we are new to the PL. The Jerome/Benitez partnership is the one that seems to work the best but at the moment Big Eck seems to have a problem with Benitez which makes me think Benitez will not be kept at the end of the season. Wide left doesn't suit Fahey which is probably why he is getting so much stick at the moment but if McFadden is playing up front it's difficult to know who else to put there. It's clear we need to strengthen the squad and good to hear that McLeish reckons we need 5 to 6 players in the summer. My biggest fear is that we don't secure Hart on another seasons loan. He may not have had his best game last night but hes saved us at least 10 to 12 points this season. Repalcing him will be very difficult. |

Although the recent results are annoying, I'm not too concerned and in fact am quite optimistic about next season. We've played some decent stuff of late and lack of concentration has let us down badly. Alex said himself last night "We totally dominated. I thought there was only going to be one winner after James (McFadden) equalised." I'm sure AM knows what needs to be done in the Summer and I'm already thinking about where I should sit for next seasons's ST. |

the only thing i learnt from last night is that the balance of the team is so fragile with Fahey and Gardner playing i thought we might be more vulnerable defensively McFadden and Jerome for me has never been a good effective partnership, even though in theory it should running out of steam i'd figure is quite a big factor this stage of the season, not many teams play the virtually the same team all season motivation seems to still be there, but i get the feeling that the team no longer thinks of every mistake as critical |

from day 1 I said garnder would be more effective in the middle Fahey should only really play when chucho does because it creates the space going forward and the time keith needs to put in the dangerous balls. At the start of the season dann made a few mistakes but rj was there to help and now those roles have reversed whch shows both how much dann has improved in such a short time and also how well they work togther |

bluemood I agree with your ratings, the boys are getting tired, rotation is needed, McFADDEN played well but should have been substituted, himself and Phillips should rotate at half time. Taylor needs to rotate with Hart. Michel needs to be played. Parnaby & Vignal need to be played. :Blues: :Blues: |
