What gets me more is seeing people pushing pushchairs or holding kids in their arms whilst smoking. Wreck their own health if they want to, but not the health of their kids! "no" |

If there's kids in the car then it's child abuse IMO and the parent should be locked up. If it's consenting adults then i dont see that it needs to be 'banned'. |

I think smokers should be clamped down on a lot more If someone who smokes takes up nhs time and money and it is either as a result or not helped by their smoking then charge them before treatment. Grantedsmokers pay towards the nhs but so do the rest of us and at the end of the day a lot of smokers medical conditions are self caused. Im not only down on smoking but anything self inflicted. Someone needs their stomach pumped because of drinking too much or taking drugs, charge them. Obviously due to the circumstances youd have to charge after the medical attention. If they dont charge then bang em in prison for a month or so. Its about time people started taking responsibility for abusing themselves, their bodies and other peoples bodies. When I rule this country it will be a much better place. A utopia |

agreed More emphasis needs to be put on health, and the smoking in public ban and now this are the first steps. Even to the point of having lessosn at school teaching kids about looking after themselves and their bodies as well as more emphasis on the whole pe side of things...healthy body healthy mind |

if smoking is bad for you so is alchohol so maybe they should ban that. people drink whilst in charge of their kids, people drink and drive, people get smashed at weekends and cause extra work for the ambulance and police service.not all people i hear you say and i say not all smokers are irresposible.so where do you draw the line. and why involve even more police watching for motorists smoking instead of chasing criminals.oops i forgot, smokers are criminals. |

I agree. There are very very few benifits to alcohol compared to the negatives (im not classing people getting drunk and then happy after feeling down/unhappy/miserable etc as a benfit because all that does is mask a void in someone life where they need alcohol to fill the void) like when people say 1 glass of red wine a day is good for you etc because lets face it, 99% of people have not got the self control to just have 1....1 becomes 2, 2 becomes 3, 3 becomes 4 and 4 becomes....you guessed it, more. I think we're moving in the direction of restrictions being put on alcohol, the adverts have aired recently about the dangers of drinking too much, before the only 'anti-drinking' adverts were on around xmas for drink driving but they have been on a lot latley, saying how the whole "1 more then" culture is responcible for killing and harming thousands of people. |

The one thing I've always thought about smoking in cars is that if a tab drops out of your mouth when you're at the wheel, then regardless of what the car's up to, your hands are going to come off the wheel and you'll be looking downwards trying to avoid being set alight. That's reason enough for me. |

tubs2 did a runner when someone on this forum dared to question his opinions. Getting back to smoking in cars, as a non smoker myself I can understand the health issues if there are kids on board. But surely the space in someones own vehicle is a private space. Personally I think the government are slowly becoming a dictatorship. The wisdom of pooley comes into question as well if they banned smoking altogether then it would go underground as would drinking etc, which inevitably leads to more crime. we all know the problems drugs cause. |

I find it quite hard to smoke and drive at the same time so it won't mater to me if they do ban it. Thing is though isn't this a form of persecution? One more freedom removed from a person not breaking any laws sounds very facsist to me. |

agreed. I do believe legislation is being looked at to stop smoking in entrances to buildings............it was obvious smokers would do that, they should have brought that in at the same time of the original legislation. Banning smoking in cars is being looked at. ...so it makes sense to ban smoking anywhere. And the sooner the better. |

I dunno, you're probably not allowed to juggle at the wheel, so it's probably under "driving with due care and attention" and all that. Are you going to be allowed to smoke if you're in the passenger seat? Now I'd be with you if that was the case. |

As a non smoker and a very mild drinker one maybe two cans per week (depending what footy is on the box) I would like to ban alcohol before we ban smoking. At least a smoker knows what he/she is doing, whereas a drunk has no inhibitions, a drunk thinks he can conquer the world. Just my opinion of course. |

Alcohol causes betwen 15 and 22,000 deaths a year. The cost of alcohol related treatment from drunkeness to cirrhosis is about £3.7 BILLION A YEAR to the NHS. Smoking related illness costs the NHS about £1.4 to £1.7 Billion a year. Just to keep it in perspective. |

What sort of a student are you :P For many alcohol is a form of escapism from their boring mondain and repetative lives, people enjoy it. Granted their are idiots that act up when drunk and their are alcoholics who are a drain on society but the vast majority of people are responsible, even binge drinking students. I would prefer something to be done about the spongers in society who are living off the tax payer first. Like children having children and then having more children when they cant support them themselves. For me that is a bigger problem in our country than someone enjoying a drink or a ciggerette. And they are slowly killing themselves in the process. There are far better ways to espace for a few hours....read a book, go for a walk when the weather is nice, watch a film, listen to music, do some gardening, work out, play with your dog/kids/partner etc the list goes on forever |

I'm always surprised when people automatically jump to the alcohol Vs smoking debate as some kind of defence for smokers. The bottom line is if i sit next to you and i'm drinking a pint of lager in no way does that dramatically increase your likelyhood of getting cancer. |
