One of my favourite comic heroes, Dan Dare, will be celebrating his 60th anniversary on 14th April, as will the comic in which he made his debut in the very first issue, Eagle. I used to love his battle with the Mekon, but there were so many good comics around at the time for both boys and girls, so I thought I would open this up for people to add their own reminiscenses and say what their favourites were. I was buying comics for my grandchildren recently, and looked at the range on offer. In my opinion they are very poor and are nowhere near the standard of the comics we used to read. Or am I being too nostalgic? |

I don't remember the original Dan Dare, but in the mid-Seventies, there was a re-vamped Dan Dare in the 2000AD comic (where Judge Dredd began...), with really futuristic style clothing, etc. Then, they changed it again, and the clothing became more contemporary, and the style of the stories became quite Star trek-ish.... |

I loved the Eagle. Especially the cut-away illustrations in the middle. Battleships areoplanes- brilliant illustrations and well drawn. The Eagle was deliberately started to combat the increasing US violence and horror comics - they eventually got banned. Was it in the Hotspur that someone had a magic patch on his trousers? Very few pictures in them and my older brother had it and I had the Beano. |

i read many comics as a kid and they were fascinating and informative, my kids have them for xmas annuals and such like which are absolute rubbish, stupid storyless wastes of paper infact, when i go abroad theres always uk comics the war story type im always gripped by them. ive got about 100 origional marvel comics from the 60's stashed away biddle and webb auctioneers valued them at £20 - £30 each, |

Dan Dare crashes in the jungle and is captured by some cannibals. They say they are going to boil him in a big pot, he says you cant do that, im Dan Dare im famous, everybody knows me. Oh really says the cannibals... ok then we will go into the jungle and the first person we meet, if they know who you are, we wont eat you. So they walk into the jungle and Dan Dare is thinking there is no chance of anybody knowing me in this jungle. As they walk through they see a guy in the distance, as he gets closer he shouts 'Hello dare' :silence: |

Read loads of 'em when I was growing up...can't remember which one it was had Alf Tupper - The tough of the track. A miner??? who could out do any toff at sport. The Commando books were crushed by the rise of PC but I have seen them around in Cardiff. |

It's you - "Hello Dare" - "Hello There"???? :D OK so it was unlikely they'd come across an Irishman in the jungle but's that just the sort of thing that would happen to the mighty DD |

Such is the influence of Commando magazine and schoolboy stuff like that, that even now when I've got a SA80 (the standard issue rifle) on me, it's about 10 seconds before I make the "uh-huh-huh-huh-huh-huh" machine gun noise to myself. |
