Treacherous conditions which slowed the pace of the game, but I bet the players didn't complain about the state of the pitch.

Brilliant post. Blues at their (previous) best in that era. That was Jeff Hall at RB as well. I saw that team many times, but not that game.

My Dad couldn't get tickets for the game and we went to see Wolves playing the Busby Babes (Bobby Charlton, a mere lad, was in their team). I was wearing my Blues scarf and as we waited for a bus back to Brum a Wolves fan passed us and said 'bad luck son the baggies have got beat 1-0', well you can imaging my joy.

i heard him mention roy warhurst, was he the captain? i used to know him quite well, he used to come to the place where i worked about twice a week (walsall conduits in west brom) he had a scrap metal business. this was in the early 70s, he was a super guy, and my mates at work assured me he was a great player. am i right in thinking he missed the cup final through injury.
anyway great memories, big games, big crowds.

Len Boyd was captain and he played in the final but probably should not have because he was carrying an injury. Roy Warhurst didn't play as he was injured a good few weeks before the final if memory serves. In those days hard tackling was expected and I would describe Roy Warhurst as uncompromising. Blues had a very good mix of players, skilful, hard and professional.

They were great to watch but did pick up a bit of a reputation of being overly strong in the tackle, that reputation was undeserved and they were no different to most teams in those days. As I say great to watch and at their best were tremendous.

The '56 final was a real disappointment as they seemed to freeze on the day and with the usually excellent Boyd not performing as he could because of the injury.

Sorry to tread on your memories, alanhughes, but The Baggies game was on 18th February 1956 and Bobby Charlton didn't make his debut for united until October 1956, ironically, at Charlton!

Saw that game Woodbine , if I remember right Peter Murphy scored a cracker of a goal. Cannot get your link up, but I think the pitch was covered in snow.
Went with my boss who was a baggies supporter, and he was none too pleased.
Did we play in white shirts and black shorts?

You're right the old memory is going, just saw the team United had out on Feb 18 and it was:

Ray Wood
Ian Greaves
Roger Byrne
Eddie Colman
Mark Jones
Duncan Edwards
Johnny Berry
Liam Whelan
Tommy Taylor
Dennis Viollet
David Pegg

I think I must have seen Bobby down the Blues later that year. Still not a bad team to watch was it and a great result whilst waiting at the bus stop.
