The latest from Tatts on the Miccoli transfer. Sounds like we are getting there. **thumbup

http://www.birminghammail.net/birmingham-s...97319-26660291/

BLUES are homing in on Fabrizio Miccoli after two significant events in their quest for the Italian striker. His club Palermo are considering an improved £5 million offer, and the player and his agent have held a meeting with officials requesting that he is sold. The indications coming from Sicily are that Palermo will cash in on the 30-year-old and grant him his wish. Blues are primed to open contract talks and conclude a deal as quickly as possible to make Miccoli Alex McLeish’s fourth capture of the summer.

Blues acted swiftly on initial feedback from their contacts about Miccoli’s availability. They didn’t think he would be available after an outstanding 19-goal campaign for Palermo, that took them to the brink of Champions League qualification. But word got back that Miccoli wanted to try his luck in the Premier League and he encouraged Blues’ overtures. Matters gathered apace and although Blues’ initial offer of around £4 million was dismissed, Palermo recognised that Miccoli was unsettled.

But it was always going to require the player to approach Palermo’s powers-that-be to make it clear he wanted out. That has now happened and sources told the Birmingham Mail that Blues feel they are ‘close’ to arranging the transfer in principle.

Blues have received notice that Miccoli’s knee surgery last month was successful and not a major procedure. But, naturally, they will want him to undergo a stringent medical and checks of their own to be doubly sure.

McLeish is still in South Africa taking in World Cup matches and also visiting relatives.
But he remains at the heart of the transfer business, staying in touch with Peter Pannu – who has returned to England – and chief scout Paul Montgomery via telephone and email.

Palermo’s sporting director Walter Sabatini has consistently stated that, ideally, they would not like to sell Miccoli. But neither would they stand in his way, if the money was right. Blues believe their improved bid should hit the target and set the wheels in motion for their next round of summer spending.

Palermo have signed well-travelled forward Massimo Maccarone from Siena for an undisclosed fee.

Maccarone, 30, has signed a three-year deal with the option of a fourth as he joins the tenth club of his career.

The twice-capped Italy striker failed to build on the potential he showed as a youngster at AC Milan and Empoli, and struggled during a spell in England with Middlesbrough, but restored his reputation during three years at Siena as he scored 44 goals in 95 appearances.

However, his goals were not enough to save Siena from the drop at the end of last season, allowing Palermo to swoop in as they reinforce for their UEFA Europa League campaign next season.

Meanwhile, Palermo striker Fabrizio Miccoli is to hold a press conference on Thursday amid increasing speculation over his future.

Miccoli has been strongly linked with a move to the Premier League, with Palermo sporting director Walter Sabatini admitting Birmingham City have made enquiries about the 30-year-old.

Palermo have insisted he is not for sale, with Sabatini yesterday telling TGS: "Is Miccoli considering Birmingham's offer? It is normal that a player has some doubts when an offer is received.

"Palermo do not want to sell the player. We will evaluate everything soon. Miccoli is essential for us, and it is important that we do not lose him, but it is equally important that everyone is happy."

Miccoli, who has 10 caps for Italy, has been at Palermo for the last three years, scoring 40 goals in 86 appearances.

Fabrizio Miccoli will stay at Palermo and not join Birmingham City

The diminutive striker had been tipped to join the Premier League side in a £4.1 million (€5m) switch which would see him earn £2m a year, with the Rosanero hierarchy stressing they would not stand in the way of a transfer.

But Zamparini has now indicated that Miccoli will not move away from Palermo, who plan to keep the former Juventus man for many years.

"Fabrizio Miccoli will remain at Palermo. The press conference tomorrow will erase any doubt about our captain's stay," Zamparini told reterete24.it.

"Yesterday, I met wtih Miccoli and reiterated the esteem and confidence of our partnership. He was a bit worried about the knee injury he sustained.

"I told him to wait because we consider him a determinant piece of our project. I saw that he became much more comfortable."

I would love him to sign, but if he doesn't, I won't be too displeased.

Whilst I understand Miccoli would give us great quality, I'd rather we went for someone slightly younger who can give us more in the long term, such as Dieumerci Mbokani of Standard Liege.

"I told him to wait because we consider him a determinant piece of our project. I saw that he became much more comfortable."

There somethging about this last line from Zamparini that I don't trust! :copno:

What's he mean by a 'determinant piece of our project' that's not even English, does it simply mean that he is determined to keep Miccoli as part of his immediate project..? because that is old news!

He also alleges Miccoli was still woried about his knee but all that is done and dusted according to Tatts who said his surgery last month was successful and not a major problem, so Miccoli wouldn't have though his knee was an issue for any future at Palmero!

Who's blagging who here and how weak is Zamparini's conclusion when he states 'I saw that he became much more comfortable'

If I didn't know better I'd swear I was listening to Rafa Benitez! :banghead:

Quote from his agent:

Miccoli's agent, Francesco Caliandro, admitted the player did not want to leave, but that he had to consider Birmingham's offer.

"We don't want to leave Palermo," Caliandro told Il Giornale di Sicilia.

"Miccoli loves the club and the city, but it is normal to consider a bid as important as that of Birmingham."

i wonder if this was merely a ploy by the player's agent to get an improved deal?

the messages coming from him are mixed; firstly there's not a chance Miccoli will stay and now he's saying they never wanted to leave. shame if so but we need to now concentrate on another deal.

Tatts articles on transfers are usually re-hashed from news already published elsewhere.
Today's Evening Mail article seems based on the Sun's article published on the Web last night and in today's Sun paper.

Whether Miccoli signs or not, we will know soon enough, but Tatts will not know any sooner than the rest of us
