I just did a bit of quick research and as we all know, this is now our 7th season in the Premier League, in those seasons we have played at home on the opening day just once! We've lost 3, drawn 2 and won 1 of the six so far

2002/2003 - Arsenal (a)
2003/2004 - Spurs (h)
2004/2005 - Portsmouth (a)
2005/2006 - Fulham (a)

2007/2008 - Chelsea (a)

2009/2010 - Man Utd (a)
2010/2011 - Sunderland (a)

Give us a break!!

Is there some sort of format that one or two of the newly promoted teams plays the champions and another member of the big 5?

I've noticed that too Sutton....
In fact I watched for it particularly this year....
We playerd Manure last year at Old Trafford....
I cannot recall any of the others....
But this year Manure at Home again to Newcastle....
Chelski at Home to the Boggies....
Spurs and Liverpool both at Home too....

It seems almost psychological to me....
Let's get "our top teams" in a winning frame of mind from the off....
And let those pretenders from the Championship get in the frame of mind for losing and a relegation battle.... :break:

The game we won was the one against Spurs. It was the early kick-off, too. I seem to remember it was a 12 O' Clock start, though I stand to be corrected. The second game that day kicked off half an hour later, and it was won by a wider margin than our win over Spurs. Therefore, we were on top of the Premier after our first match, be it for only 30 minutes!

Yep, we were the first game on, and won from a David Dunn penalty.

Cue the chants all around the ground of "we are top of the league"

I remember that because i was on holiday at the time! We beat Spurs 1-0 with Dunny's pen and then Pompey won 2-0 on their Prem debut to go above us half hour later!!

We then went to St James Park and won 1-0, dunny again, this time he missed the pen and scored the rebound!

That was the season we were 4th for ages wasn't it??

I think the first few fixtures give us a chance of getting to 20 points pretty quickly! The sooner you get to that target before xmas the better

Yep - I've noticed that too. Also, the one promoted side that doesn't get one of those very difficult fixtures is usually at home to a side that struggled the season before. Blackpool v Wigan this season.
