Just been looking at various media sources for any stories breaking with us at the heart of it. Since the new board came in we have been linked with numerous players from around the world. We have failed to attract any of the trophy signings we have targeted so far. No N'zogbia, No Babel, No Pav, No Miccoli, No Boyd, No Piqionne, No Zamora, No Cole, No Boseli and No McGeady. 10 targets and none look like coming to us in the immediate future. This is quite worrying in that we clearly are not an attractive enough side to get the players we want. we are being used by agents to secure better deals for their players. We have been mugged again and need to be fearful of the stigma that is left when top players continuely turn us down. A trophy signing would do wonders for our image and status perhaps we are a couple of seasons away from getting the names we want. Your thoughts? |

Out of all the names you mentioned, the only one that turned us down was Miccoli, and he described that as the 'hardest decision of his life' with tears in his eyes, as he opted to stay with the club he fired into Europe for the first time in their history, rather than coming to the Prem. Nzogbia said in January that he would happily come to Blues, but no fee has been agreed with the two parties, so that could still happen. Im 99% sure Babel, Pav, Cole and Mcgeady could have been purchased if we would have met the clubs asking prices, but none of them turned us down. Boyd probably would have been signed if we werent keeping Kev, and im imagining Kev was after lower wages than Boyd so we dont need him, however if he hasnt agreed anything with any clubs by the new season then he could still be purchased as a last-minute buy to cover our options. Zam hasnt turned us down either, I just dont think Blues offered enough money. And Piqiounne + Bosellli, I dont even think there was anything concrete to say we were in negotiations with their respective clubs over a deal, so those could of just been paper-fillers, but im sure we could have got them if we would have offered the right cash. On the flipside however, weve just signed a Goalkeeper capped by England and an International striker from a team like Valencia, who both stated that the clubs ambition was something that helped make the decision to sign for us. Its still early days yet, but I have no doubt in my mind that we will sign a very good winger or striker by the end of the window (Could even be some of the names mentioned above), but most business happens after World Cup, so I guess we just have to be patient and let Eck and the boys do all the hard work! :Blues: |

Foster? Zigic? You don't see either of those two as "trophy" signings yet you laud the likes of Boyd, McGeady, Piqionne and Zamora as "trophy" signings  IMO both of the players above already signed are much bigger and higher profile signings than the likes of Boyd, Piqioone, Zamora et al. Who is it you are expecting? Joe Cole, Torres? |

We should put a bid in for the old FA Cup that David Gold bought a few years back. That's a trophy signing :P |

Why do we need a trophy signing as you call it? We have to get in the right quality and I think we are trying to do just that. Being linked with a lot of players does not always mean we are after them. We are only looking at our second season in the Premeir League and some of the players we are after may see us as not well enough established yet to join us.We are competing for better qualty players this summer and I expect we will have a few knock backs but we can't afford to feel sorry for ourselves , it's business not personal. Plus it's mainly about agreeing fees with selling clubs that has been the issue as posted above. I have been delighted with the efforts of the club this summer to improve the team and have no doubt that we will bring in more exciting signings yet. We have done more business than many other clubs so far and I have every confidence that we will start at Sunderland with a very strong side. It is still only the middle of June my friend! Let your heart beat strong and all that. :drink: |

I think we all understand what is meant by trophy signings a name that immediately makes people sit up and say Birmingham mean business. I am talking about a player that can and will attract other good players to us. Some have cited Foster and Zigic as good examples of that but I beg to differ. Whilst both are good signings for where we are at the mo none are big enough in my mine to convince a Pavyuchenko to tell blues to come and get me. Pointless or not what is wrong with discussing these issues on a fans forum? |

You beg to differ about the names mentioned, but yet you call Boyd and Piquionne 'Trophy signings'. So people are gonna sit up and take notice, on the back of us signing a guy who has spent his life playing in Scotland (a league where I could score) and a guy who had one half-decent in the Prem on loan. What I understand to be 'Trophy signings', would be the likes of Riquleme, Henry, Beckham, Ronaldinho, maybe Pires. Those sort of names. But Kris Boyd a trophy signing? :LMAO: |

That was my point. You talk about how we have missed out on these so called "trophy" signings such as Boyd and Piquonne, but don't mention the fact we have signed Foster and Zigic. Foster, played for England, signed him from arguably the best and biggest club in the world for a large fee. There are many other clubs in the premier leage who would love to have signed him, same with Zigic. I think we need to be realistic. A true trophy or marquee signing would have to be a household/big name. The only marquee signings we would likely be able to buy would be an aging, possibly past it player on his way out and looking for a final payday. Is that the kind of player we really need? Would you really want to pay say 90k a week for someone like Henry or Van Nistelroy to come and play for one season for us and then just have to replace them the season after. Look what happened to our last Trophy signing Dugarry, awesome whilst he was on loan, but as soon as he signed permanently he was terrible. Don't get me wrong I would love to see big-big names playing for us. But for the time being I think you need to realise that players like Zigic/Foster/Nzogbia are the biggest we are going to be able to get for now. Our plan is to build slowly and establish ourselves in the Prem. Another question for you (the forum in general not just the OP). If we had paid more money for Zigic. Say we had signed Zigic from Valencia for £15 million, would you have then classed him as a trophy signing? |

The list I provided as targets were a ramdom 10 from a list approx 20 plus that we have in some cases been strongly linked to. On Boyd I personally wouldn't call him a trophy signing however lets not kid ourselves a lot of blues fans were obsessed with the idea of Boyd coming to our club and the thread on him in this board is evidence of that. Trophy signing. The sort of person I am talking about is a Henry type figure not him in particular but someone of his stature coming to the end of a contract but with a few good seasons left in him. £70,000 - £90,000 a week for two / three years, would you guys consider this to be a bad deal? The impact such a signing would bring both here and in Asia is mine boggling. Someone of stature around 30 with one last challenge left in hiim seems like a good deal for me. |

Trophy signings, we are only in our second season up so its more about getting players who will keep us up whilst we strengthen slowly so we are then in a postion to go for trophys. Rome was not built in a day and it my take us a few seasons yet to be ready to challenge for domostic cups, just remember that the top clubs now want to win these as a way into europe as the top 4 becomes maybe the top 6. |

We only need one tophy signing for this season. Beckham / Giggs is a perfect example. I am sure there are other candidates out there. |

original poster seems to suggest we are being spun false promises by the board due to the targets suggested yet the players mentioned are what the media has linked us 2 , not what the board or management has...so maybe we should take into consideration that some of it is lazy journalism |

Raul has been granted a free transfer by Real Madrid this summer and is being courted by Besiktas. With Steve McManamans links there, why not try a cheeky punt? Get it done under the radar before anyone gets a sniff and we're set or the season, shirt sales through the roof and season tickets dareisay sold out Just a thought feed.back |
