..Coventry City have agreed a deal to bring Gary McSheffrey back to the club on a one-year contract from Birmingham City.

McSheffrey started his career with the Sky Blues and scored 53 goals in 162 appearances before joining Birmingham in a £4million deal in 2006.

However, the striker has struggled for first-team football at St Andrews over the past two seasons and spent a spell on loan at Leeds United last term.

He was out of contract at Birmingham at the end of the month and the 27-year-old has now accepted a return to his first club.

A 12-month deal, with the option of a further year, has been agreed and Coventry boss Aidy Boothroyd is looking forward to having McSheffrey in his squad.

"I know about Gary's affiliation with Coventry City and while that's a very positive thing, we are bringing him in because of his qualities as a player and a character, not just because he is a local lad," Boothroyd told the club's official website.

"We feel he will be a very good addition to the squad and all Coventry City supporters will know that Gary McSheffrey in his pomp is an outstanding player in the Championship.

"His last couple of seasons have not seen him hit the peaks that he did here at Coventry or in the year he was instrumental in winning Birmingham promotion, but we have brought him back with the aim of getting him and us back up to that level."

Good Luck **thumbup

His goals got us promotion under Bruce, and that should not be forgotten. Lost his way, but never hid or sulked.
I wish him well. Good move for all concerned.

Good luck to him think that he will do well for Coventry. A mate of mine spoke to him at a school fate he was attending in Kenilworth recently and he told him he was desperate for a chance to return to Coventry

A real shame that he lost it, for whatever reason, at St Andrews. I think most on here would wish him luck in the future for being a genuine sort of player, albeit one that had a breakdown of sorts.

The so called boo boys have nothing to do with his metal state, he went from the Messiah of the unwashed in Coventry to the small fish in our big pond. HE wont be there long though if his form improves as they slap a price tag on the lawn mower when it moves.

He is a player that needs adulation but unfortunately the only people who rate him are the tracksuit sporting, Burberry cap wearing, Reebok classic owning Coventry supporter and even those dont think he is a good as he thinks he is!

I agree

His downfall was his own fans turning on him - the problem with him is not his football ability, but his mental strength. Unlike some of the games biggest characters he couldnt block out the boos and it ruined him

Good servant for the Blues, just a shame we couldnt get a couple of million for him instead of him walking on a free.

But it is a good sign that the expectancy and ambition levels of our squad, right down to the fringe players is ever-rising.

Good luck though Gary! 20 goals for the club in 90 odd appearances, not a bad contribution at all.

I wish him all the best... Just lost his confidence when we got promoted to the Prem.

Great player when he first came and I enjoyed watching him play :banner:

A lot a money wasted for a player nowhere near prem level imo.

Don't agree that the boo boys got to much for him. I think it was the injuries especially the knee injury he never quite got over it and also the fact that Alex thought he was behind several players in the pecking order that did for his Blues career. Plus I don't think he was good enough for the top flight

Good Luck McSheff **thumbup Thanks for all your effortts

Actually makes me cringe that we can a let player with McSheff's ability go for nothing yet keep hold of a donkey and total waste of space like Gary O'Connor

It's a funny old game as Greavsie used to say !!

i thank him for his time at the club, have no idea why it went down hill for him, Alex did give him a chance though, it speak volumes that he's only been offered a one year contract at Coventry. last chance saloon, i'd grab it if i were him.

He's provided some good moments, especially in his first season here. I know that it didn't turn out as planned, but he's made a bigger success of his career than some people on here that are queuing up to slate him.

Agree. He had injury problems. They led to a loss of some of his finer attributes - but some fans couldn't see that he needed support not criticism. Eventually the loss of fitness/form/confidence took it's toll.

I sincerely hope he gets it all back together at Coventry and that he has a happy few seasons there. Personally, I think he's done the right thing in returning 'home' where he can expect some encouragement from his fans.

I think he'll do better in a league and club where expectations are lower and the pressure is less. A good player whose head seems to interfere with his feet, unfortunately. A star for a season...

Good luck Sheff!

Cant deny without him in his first six months here, we wouldnt have been promoted that season...unfortunatly, since then, its just been a downhill spiral for him, even struggling to play when on loan at League 1 Leeds!

I think Brucey ruined him when he kept drilling into him, he needed to always track back and defend, as he always then seemed too pre-occupied on the man he had to mark, than to gamble, and get in the box on the end of a cross or something!

Wasn't a waste of money either, he more than made up for his transfer fee, coming to us and getting us promoted.

All the best to him, was a good player here for 6 months, then could never get back to that level.
