Birmingham ahead of Fulham for Twente midfielder Cheik Tiote

FC Twente midfielder Cheik Tiote is a £4 million target for Birmingham City.

The News of the World says the Ivorian was one of the stars of Steve McClaren's Dutch title-winning side but is available at the right price.

And Alex McLeish is keen to bring the Ivorian to St Andrew's as cover for established first-choice midfield pairing Barry Ferguson and Lee Bowyer.

Fulham are also keeping tabs on the 23-year-old, but Birmingham have stolen a march on their rivals and are keen to tie up a deal after the World Cup.

Cover for Bowyer and Ferguson is sorted. It's called Michel, then Gardner, then Fahey, then Mutch...

Can't see this one happening to be honest.

If we're in the market for a central midfielder, we'll be looking for a playmaker, not a deeper lying, defensive midfielder.

**thumbup I agree.
But AM knows more than we do, so if he does join, AM must have a plan.

Yeah, ill trust, and back the manager.... but I cant help feel if he does bring in an established defensive midfielder... then we'll be seeing some 4-5-1 next season with a team possibly like :

Ben Foster
Stephen Carr -- Roger Johnson -- Scott Dann -- New/Liam Ridgewell
New Defensive Midfielder
Barry Ferguson -- Lee Bowyer/Craig Gardner/Michel
New Winger ----------------------------------------------------------James McFadden/New Winger
Nikola Zigic

If thats the case, and he wants a reliable, and classy defensive midfielder, then he could do no worse than join the clubs in the hunt for former Arsenal player, Gilberto Silva. He may be getting on a bit, but he's disciplined in there, and would bring calmness to our defensive side of things.

If we are in the market for a defensive midfielder then Annan is the one we want from Ghana.

True that! I like Annan a lot and recommended him in the 'Fan Scouting' thread... if the opportunity for us to sign him is there full stop, then we must act.

Isn't Tiote the despicable cheat that got Kaka sent off by holding his face? If so - it's a no from me.

Birmingham City and Fulham are believed to be interested in signing Ivory Coast and Twente midfielder Cheick Tiote.

The 24-year-old began his career with Anderlecht, where an unpleasant debut saw him fall instantly down the pecking order. At the time, the defensive midfielder had been scouted out by the Belgian club, and featured in a domestic cup as his side lost following the player missing a penalty during the encounter with Geel.

The midfielder was later packed away on loan to Roda JC, where positive performances earned him a permanent contract with FC Twente. He made the switch, and was a part of the squad that won the Eredivisie title last season.

Now The Sun reports that the Ivorian caught the gaze of managers Roy Hodgson and Alex McLeish following the highly successful campaign by the Dutch side.

Tiote is currently with his national team at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, and has put in bright performances despite lacklustre results for his side.

Annan looks quality, i'm sure they said tonight on commentary he plays in Norway i'm sure he wouldnt cost us much if thats the case.

would definitely tick the young solid centre mid player for us.
