Hi all,

saints fan here....

apparently we're close to signing Darren Carter from preston, he started out with you guys - so what is he like?

We're a bit mixed about the signing due to the reactions of the preston fans, they can't wait to get shot.

Can't really ask us to be fair. He hasn't played for us in, what, 6 years?

He didn't really seem anything special when he came through the ranks first time round; managed to become a cult hero thanks to one kick of the ball, so fair play on that, but he was never more than an average Championship player. Plus he's a Bluenose, so marks there.

Good luck anyway; you should batter that league this season.

But that kick was something wasn't it.

Full house, Millennium Stadium, final match of the season, drawing with Norwich at full time, goes to penalties, the last kick if converted takes us into the Premiership for the first time in 16 years, and the boy (cos that was what he was then) withstood the pressure and hit the mark.

I will never cease to get the spinal shivers at the thought of that.

People remember him for his vital spot kick, but some people also forget, when he returned from his loan spell at Sunderland, before he signed for Baggies he was a really good servant to this club, I remember him coming back from his loan like a supercharged version of his former self, the lad has got heart, and tonnes of it.

If you are looking for a hard-worker with a never-say-die attitude then you have found him with DC, and to be fair, you need all the hard-workers you can get in the Championship.

Good luck with the season though fella, I like Saints, they play some nice stuff and have some pretty good players.

Hopefully Carter does a job for you lot if the signing goes through, and like Tresor mentioned, if you reach the Playoff Finals and need someone with a cool head to step up, you have your man **thumbup

cheers for the comments.

Seems like he could be a decent addition, we do need a bit more in the middle of the park so he could add to that

i really hope we do batter the league...the expectation down here is huge, which isn't always a good thing.

Good luck to you lot as well, hope you can do as well as you did last year! (or even better..!)

Just before he went to West Brom I said to my cousin, who is a West Brom fan, that you won't even know he's on the pitch most of the time but then he's capable of scoring a good goal from nothing...

After watching him at West Brom my cousin agreed my assessment was perfect...

He's decent enough, especially for league one I'd imagine though...

I thought he was really good when here, he used to get forward from midfield and score goals.

I feel sorry for him the way things have worked out since, as when we sold him I felt it was a mistake . I think saints is a perfect club for him to kickstart his career.

If I recall correctly a neat and tidy midfield player without explosive pace or a killer pass. But will always live on in the memory for that spot kick. I cried with joy.

massivley underated player.

He was more than a guy who took a spot kick - he had bundles of energy was creative and could spot a good pass...he wasnt afraid to get forward either. We should have held onto him. When he moved away he lost his way somewhat.

Top lad, top player

He wasn't under rated. He was rated properly, a distinctively average midfielder. I think his career sums up the sort of player he is. Hasn't done anything anywhere, and thats being lenient.

80 odd caps for pne, 50 odd for baggies! Never really took his chance IMO

I agree, when I think of some of the rubbish Brucie kept buying and playing ahead of him.....he's a good signing for Saints. Good Luck Darren.................!'The Premiership'

This, he was never going to make it any higher than lower half Division 1.

For the penalty alone (well, and being a Bluenose) im sure every Blues fan wouldve loved him to progress into some sort of mini Stevie Gerrard for us, Mr Birmingham City, and be our talisman for years to come.

Unfortunately, he wasnt good enough at the end of the day, and whilst he done us a decent job in the Prem when called upon, we needed to improve on "just decent".

Will never, ever forget that penalty kick though, and the lad is a top, top bloke! Met him a few times.

Best thing he did was make Bryan Hughes Play even better than he normally did as he had to become a more all rounded midfield player due to him having to pretty much do the job of two people. Will always be remembered for that penalty but has proberbly found his standard - will do a decent job for you.

As you are now probably aware you are signing a true blue lege! But one whose glory days were at the beginning of his career, Brucie brought him into what proved to be our promo winning squad and after he had been out on loan to Sunderland Brucie brought him back in our third season in the prem, he excelled but sadly for all of us couldnt replicate that form. He has a rocket shot and is good in the air but never ever scores!! poss 1 or 2 goals max for us.
Hope you take to him!

I think you can tell we all, well most of us, wish him every success with Saints. He's a nice lad, good pro, with some skill and will always sit happily in our memories.

He was never an amazing player but will do you a job, but for that one spot kick he will always be a legend to me. When I was living in Leicester I went to a PNE game Vs Leicester and sat in the away end and he scored a screamer in the last minutes to win PNE the game!

even though it wasnt for us - his screamer v arsenal for the baggies was awesome.

Not only for the strike but the control before it

Not a spectacular player, despite some infrequent but fairly spectacular goals, but definitely underrated by most. As a 'signing' I can understand Saints fans being underwhelmed, but he will do his best for the club and you'll never criticise his work rate or enthusiasm. He will be appreciated given time. A very nice bloke off the field too.
