Carson,

Where is the £80 million promised on new players? Recently stated in the press by both Rodger Johnson and Alex McLeish that the team needs more players.

If the team begins to struggle due to lack of promised funds, the mood will change and the fans will begin to turn - and it will not be against the manager or the players.

it was upto 80 including players fees and wages etc and has been blown out of proportion and context somewhat since the press conference.

The squiad needs strengthening the money is there but eck doesnt want to pay over the odds - he knows as soon as he does then he will get the harry redknap reputation of paying whatever it costs to get the player and as such prices will skyrocket more than before.

Alex lives and dies by results and putting together a quality entertaining squad of players ,one's who will draw fans back to St Andrews,he couldn't care less how much money it costs IT'S NOT HIS MONEY ,its his job on the line and he knows he needs the best players to enhance the chance of keeping said job ,and enhancing his reputation in order to be considered for one of the top 6 jobs ,should one become available .

The big question is Why has he not signed his new contract? ,it's been going on for months now !

And most important IS THERE ANY MONEY for new players ?

I think if McLeish spent 80 million on players and we struggled, he would be open to criticism and dismissal. In some ways, spending less makes his job a little easier.....lower expectations.

You are spot opn managers on the whole will pay whatever it takes to sign players, most managers in the league would be proud to have Harry boys reputation for attracting good players.
The worry at the club is alex`s contract, personally cant see any signings till that is sorted.
Whatever the issueas are they need resolving at once,

Where did you read that one?
At the time of the promise of the money, I asked whether or not this sum included wages, and nobody could tell me.

Very shortly afterwards pannu (i think it was but might have been another baord member) clarified that it was upto £40 (so there was no guarentee we would def spend that much) and also that it included wages/signing on fee etc.

This is a perfect example of people hearing what they want to hear, seeing what they want to see.

The money does matter when you consider he bought 2 brilliant prem class players last window for 8 mil in johns oand dann why pay over £10 for one player who might play a different position but whos worth to the team would be the same?

Everyday another post trying to slate the new board, making ridiculous accusations about AM stalling his contract talks.

This board is full of pessimists!

No one seems to believe what they have read, weve had bids rejected, still spent more than under the old regime yet people still moan,

I feel that CY would have to over spend and leave us in portsmouths state to have some members of this board happy, either that or watch AM fail as a manager, its ridiculous.

Wheres the optimism gone?

I am a glass half full person and love the club but this stalled contract is sending out real doubts. Most of us on here think he is a top manager who has got the club into a position it hasnt been for `FIFTY ONE` years
so why the delay? Lets get it sorted and move on.
Far from wanting to spend mega money I would be happier if we copied last years route and brought in another two or three English players from the championship. Jerome,Johnson & Danns have worked out superbly. If we could add a few more with that hunger and desire i would be delighted.

But did he spend 40 mill in january? Oh! thats right, clubs were asking too much, better to wait for the summer window. well were still waiting...........

Like a previous poster said, If the manager had the cash he would spend it,and my OPINION is aint signing any new contract untill he gets it.

The managers memory is far better than the blue tinted fanatics on this board, remember the later stages of last seasons older players?

From todays Mail.

Birmingham boss Alex McLeish demands club clinches at least three more signings before Premier League kick off
By Neil Moxley Last updated at 11:45 AM on 2nd August 2010

Alex McLeish has turned up the heat on Birmingham City owner Carson Yeung, claiming his squad is still short of Premier League quality.
The Scot started the summer with a bang, spending £10million on Ben Foster and Nikola Zigic from Manchester United and Valencia respectively before the World Cup kicked-off.
But since then he has failed to add to his ranks and he now claims that he needs to strengthen further in the next fortnight.
In talks: Birmingham have tabled an £8m bid for Wigan's Charles N'Zogbia
McLeish set a club record after a 15-match unbeaten run and produced the highest top-level finish for 51 years after Birmingham finished ninth. But he knows full well that the gods smiled down during that campaign and wants help pushing a couple of deals over the line.
'With the season looming we have to add more quality. If you analyse what has happened then all we have done is replace two positions. Ben Foster for Joe Hart and Nikola Zigic with Christian Benitez.
'We haven't enhanced the squad yet, we have just replaced players who have left - and people we had on loan at that.
'I know owner Carson Yeung and chief executive Peter Pannu have been working hard but we remain short of bodies.
'We need quality to help this group. A couple of forwards and a defender at least. I've seen Harry Redknapp tell Daniel Levy: "Spend big or we will end up flops" and they are in the Champions League.
'Wolves have invested heavily and I'm sure Tony Pulis will spend a few bob to consolidate after two tremendous seasons.'

sorry Pooley, you're wrong!!! this is taken from The Times, a reliable source i find.
his mention of next season is, of course, this season.

Carson Yeung, the new owner of Birmingham City, waltzed into St Andrew’s yesterday and immediately promised Alex McLeish £40 million to spend in the January transfer market — and another £40 million next summer.

Representatives of the club’s new president were taken aback by the immensity of Yeung’s pledge but the new regime were agreed that tapping into the Chinese market — and 1.3 billion potential customers — could make Birmingham the best-supported club in the world.

The £40 million in the January transfer window is my commitment to the Birmingham fans,” Yeung said. “We have made that decision to spend the money to buy the players. The money is in place and available. The priority for now is staying in the Premier League.

Next season we will put more than £40 million into the team, making it much stronger. If the team keep going better, we will be looking for a potential young player in China so that all Chinese people love Birmingham City as their favourite team. Because we have businesses in China, we have the contacts to sell Birmingham already. We will be more popular than Manchester United and Chelsea. Birmingham will be popular in China because it has Chinese owners.”

Did you read the quote I provided from the horse's mouth?

he said £20 to £40...£40

£40 mil was the upper limit of the ESTIMATE he gave

He never once said "I will definatley spend £40mil this window"

If you set yourself a budget for decorating and find out you have bought the stuff you need and are a few quid under budget you dont then just go and spend for the sake of it to make it upto your budget do you?Just because money is there, it doesnt mean it HAS to be spent!

sorry Pooley, you're wrong!!! this is taken from The Times, a reliable source i find.
his mention of next season is, of course, this season.

Birmingham will be popular in China because it has Chinese owners.”

the media put 40mill YES but actual words spoken by the bloke at the press conference was 20-40 mill

....including wages, which if you add up Zigic (on big wages), Foster, Gardner and the Spanish girl it would be over 20m so far. No way under the previous owners would we get in a player Zigic on something like 50k a week.

I really don't understand the panic because we haven't signed 30 odd players yet. Its the first week in August, the market is dead, clubs are not spashing out, the whole transfer madness seems to be around Manc City and their transfers will move the market.

Blimey, start to panic on the 1st September if we haven't got three or four players in.

Cheers.

not a prob there are quite a few around

If Spurs had not increased the fee for Pavlyuchenko, 24 hours before the January window closed - he would have been a Blues' player.

He'd agreed the switch, wages and everything, but Levy believing we had loads of money tried to pull a fast one and increase the fee on the Saturday. The Window closed on the Monday. One working day to find and justify an extra £3million plus.
Pannu and McLeish said no.

If that deal had gone through, Blues' spending would have been about £25+ million with wages and fees to agents and clubs.

Hardly any money has been spent so far by any club (except Man City).
The vast majority of players coming into clubs are free or loaned.

Things are changing and I'm not sure that people are appreciating it.

All of us fans, the manager, the players, we all know we need a few more players that will enhance the squad, not just fill up the numbers.

The selling clubs know this. It would be financial incompetence to pay £10million for a player now, when that selling club will snap your hand off for £8.5 million in 10 days.
