Grit over greed
Money not making Blues world go round

..It has happened again, the honeymoon was booked, the vows written, the cake delivered, Alex McLeish must feel like a groom who's been jilted at the altar.

Roman Pavlyuchenko, Fabrizio Miccoli, Moussa Dembele and now Charles N'Zogbia, they've all been on the verge of signing, only for the player or club to have a change of heart at the last possible opportunity of escape.

From now on, only until I see the player wearing royal blue, running onto the St Andrews pitch, and smashing a volley into block 11 of the Tilton Road stand, will I truly believe a player has signed on the dotted line for Birmingham City, such is the regularity of last gasp transfer heartbreak.

Still, it could be worse. I could of witnessed my team put blood, sweat and hoof balls into 76 Premier League games for the reward of just 6 hours of rapid European adventure. Similarly, I haven't had a six-pack of Newcastle Brown Ale sitting on my desk, we have a manager and by jove, we can even convert penalties.

After the collapse of the N'Zogbia deal, where demands were raised significantly by the player at the last minute that were out of the clubs reach, McLeish could make a renewed bid for Ryan Babel of Liverpool.

He will probably travel to Birmingham after we agree a transfer record breaking fee, he will agree personal terms, he will probably even hit it off with the tea lady, only for the whole thing to fall through because his complimentary Lamborghini is in more of an amber than the orange the Dutchman requested.

Instances like the N'Zogbia debacle make you appreciate the honest professionals in the game, the players who just want to play, better their careers and deem money to not be of paramount importance.

The likes of Craig Gardner, Scott Dann and Ben Foster are few and far between in this instance, but may possess the type of attitude that will ensure team spirit remains healthy and the prevention of any mercenary led unexpected French-like failures.

Strengthen
It has still been a positive week on the pitch however, with the victories against a robust Blackburn and plucky Rochdale, we've even managed to score an uncharacteristic seven goals in three games this season. A mention must also go to 16 year old local lad Nathan Redmond who shone on his senior debut in the week displaying pace, dribbling and a lack of fear.

I got my wish of seeing Craig Gardner in central midfield and he provided a two goal salvo against Rovers in a game that saw Ben Foster earn rave reviews after a stunning penalty save and strong home debut, two further examples of the manager's nous in the market.

With just a few days left in which to strengthen the team the manager and the board will no doubt be working tirelessly to conclude some much needed transfer business, Blues fans' will be keeping everything crossed that our transfer targets are in it for the right reasons and not merely to entice other clubs' of preference to the negotiation table.

I'm not asking for Europe, I'm not asking for goals galore, nor am I asking our next new signing to get the Birmingham City badge tattoed on their arm, I merely ask that the next player who rolls up at St Andrews for transfer talks wants to live in Birmingham, wants to play for Birmingham and wants to give his all for the cause.

Is that too much to ask? In the modern day game, I fear it is.
