Yes, there is.......No less then FIVE targets for Blues and Traore and Jiranek deals look very promising according the The Mail ALEX McLeish has admitted to transfer market frustrations after seeing several prime targets ‘fall by the wayside’. But he was hopeful today of agreeable compensation by completing a triple swoop – maybe more. Click here for our transfer deadline day live blog Czech international Martin Jiranek looks certain to sign to bolster his defensive options, and Armand Traore, of Arsenal, is also set for St Andrew’s. Barcelona’s Aleksandr Hleb is also lined up for a loan, like Traore, and Chilean winger Jean Beausejour is emerging from left field as another candidate for Blues. Jiranek, 31, is up for grabs on a nominal fee from Spartak Moscow as his contract is due to expire in December. The 6ft 3in centre-half, who can fill in at left-back, joined Spartak from Reggina for £4.7 million in 2004. Left-back Traore, 20, has been targeted before by McLeish for a loan and it was thought he was on his way to Benfica. But nothing materialised, then Juventus and Blues arrived on the scene. He can also play wide midfield, so there is an obvious extra appeal to McLeish. Hleb, 29, the former Arsenal schemer – who is adept in any midfield/attacking position – was wanted by Benfica as well, but he prefers a return to the Premier League. Beausejour, 26, plays for Club America in Mexico. He was a key member of Chile’s World Cup side in South Africa, scored and was man-of-the-match in the opening game victory over Honduras. The whirlwind of activity by McLeish and Blues shows his and the club’s determination to beef up the squad before the summer window shuts today – and go some way to making up for recent disappointments. Earlier in the summer, McLeish brought in Ben Foster and Nikola Zigic, for a combined £12 million and Enric Valles. But a number of other moves didn’t come to fruition, and not for the want of trying. Cacau performed a U-turn after flying over for talks about a Bosman free transfer Then Fabrizio Miccoli’s £5 million move from Palermo was abandoned due to a knee injury. Blues were also kept hanging on by Moussa Dembele, who opted to join Fulham from AZ Alkmaar for £5 million because ‘there was something that made me think maybe I will enjoy it more at Fulham’. Then there was the Charles N’Zogbia fiasco, which so angered McLeish and the board. “We have lost out on some real quality this summer, not having got them over the line,” said the manager. “When last season finished I had definite targets but one by one they have kind of fallen by the wayside. “That shows you how hard it is to get quality in. “You can bring any amount of players in, but I need to do what I can for the Birmingham fans to make sure we have quality to enhance their squad. “We haven’t missed out on everyone – the three boys we got in quickly we’re delighted with, and Matt Derbyshire – but it has been frustrating since, yes. “The near misses with Dembele and some others, N’Zogbia. It’s unfortunate when you see how good these players are. “But as a manager your job is to keep going and not give up, just like the players don’t give up.” This window it has not been down to a lack of financial muscle on wages. Dembele was offered more money than Fulham tabled, yet Blues rightly refused to bow to N’Zogbia’s excessive demands after initially agreeing a deal to make him the club’s highest paid player ever on £45,000 a week rising beyond £50,000 in time. McLeish has been after a wideman, striker and defensive cover to add to what he has already brought in. Manchester United’s Tom Cleverley, 21, is also thought to be a contender for McLeish on loan to provide an alternative on the flanks. He was named Watford’s player-of-the-season after an impressive 2009-10 on loan at the Hornets and appeared for United this pre-season. |
