The golden olden days. Those times were a giggle.
The pies were cold, the beer warm.
Football was different before the plastic seats arrived.....

I always remember the 'Mackay for Q 8' banner....it might've actually been 'Mackay 4 Q 8'.
Some chap tied this up on the kop / tilton corner......for a while!

We were happy with the dean peers of the world......
No wonder some of us often struggle to stomach the current climate!

I'm not 100 per cent certain but I'm sure it was the 1975/76 season

Villa had the entire Tilton allocated to them when we beat them 3-2 in April of 1976

Celtic also had it for a "freindly" game in late 1975. Their fans weren't very friendly just before the game though

nor after,i got chased all the way to the Hipprodrome from just outside the ground "no"

It was given to away fans after segregation between fans was introduced. Firstly the fans were segregated in the Kop but that didnt work so they put up a wire mesh and fencing to seperate the away fans from home fans in the Tilton. We still had a bit of the Tilton nearest the Kop corner.

How long was it an away end for? Because the Leeds United fans had it on the day of the pitch invasion, same day as the Bradford fire, and that was mid 1980's.

I remember there was a big gap at the top of the mesh at one time....

I'm not sure if i'm making this up to be fair as I was about 8/9 years old but the last game of the Kop in 1994/95 season (finished 2-2? v Bristol City) im sure the away end was in the Tilton as far back as then.. but could be wrong.

I've had many drunken nights and bumps on the head since so my memory could be playing tricks on me..

At least ten years before that

Your right it was an away end then, I was 12 or 13 and cried like a baby that day,I'd only been going since 87, me Dad just looked dejected, like a little piece of him had gone. I'm so envious I never got to stand on the Tilton in the 70s with 50000 fans packed in still at least I got to stand on cattel road for a few years, Dark days in the clubs history but brilliant memories for me, That game against west brom around 91 when it'd snowed I swear there was more than the 28000 announced!

I last stood on the Tilton about 1969, we moved over to the centre of the Kop high up just to the tilton side of the half way line, simply so that we could do the old ¬knees up Mother brown` etc without the old bill dragging you out the ground!.

Great days, Stood in many a 50k crowd back then. But with hindsight the modern football experience is so much better. Back then Stan was no place fpor kids, women, or families. Violence and quite large orchestrated violence was the norm while the racism was endemic.
It went with the terrortory back then. But times have deffo changed for better.

Is it though.

The idiots are still there but now you cant move away from them as you you have a seat instead of a large terrace.

What a day to remember that was. cracking atmosphere and blues almost cocked it up in a good old fashioned way. Can anyone remember the fans on top of the executive boxes doing knee's up mother brown? and what about a mass "dying fly" on the pitch after match??

Back to the tilton though i reckon it was about 1983ish we we're stopped going in there.

Great find with the picture, steve :applause:

Clearly Blues were given most of the Tilton back for that home game with Notts County as seen on the cover

I'm guessing that was the promotion clincher in May of 1980 when we drew 3-3 in a nail biting game

We obviously moved the Notts Co fan area back towards Garrison Lane even further because they didn't bring many supporters and ony occupied that tiny corner at the time

We had 33,000 for that match and thousands invaded the pitch as Jim Smith and the players came back to greet the crowd and join in with the celebtrations

I remember that.
I was one of those on the pitch, had to tho as I was being crushed against the fence.

Took a piece of the pitch home with me. Left it in the back garden over night and the ville fans next door stole it

I stood in what was to become the away half of the Tilton back in around '76/77-ish. We beat QPR 2-1 and Tricky Trev scored a wonder goal in front of the Railway end.

I sat the upper Railway End, when the skin heads were jumping up and down on the exec boxes, the steel roof starting to bend, people in the boxes had to leg it as the light fittings were falling down!

Great day, but as someone else said, we almost cocked it up.

Can't remember when the Tilton was handed to away fans, but remember it acting like a overflow partition system.

People just used to turn up and pay on the day, and with no allocated ticketing, you sometimes couldn't guess the figures.

Been at games against the Villa, Baggies and Forest, where the Tilton was cleared completely of Blues fans, and when each section was filled (starting from the far side, Main Stand side) then the next one would be opened. By the time, the third section was opened, it was seen as a green light for the hoolies to start charging that side.

Must admit though, it did make for an impressive view to see the Tilton full of away, and pumped up the atmosphere even more.

Usually, it was only the far left section of the Tilton that was used.
