In a pub toilet near the Univ of Aston once I noticed a distinct, horizontal line that had been drawn a few feet above the urinals

Written next to it

""If you can reach this line, then your local Fire Brigade needs you now"

" One day Dear , I will marry you....and I'll never look at another horse again "

Groucho Marx

------------------------------

we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender.

Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves, that if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, 'This was their finest hour'.

"Never in the field of human conflict
Was so much owed by so many to so few"

Winston Spencer Churchill

Churchill made some crackers, including the few above;
some more:

A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on.

I'm just preparing my impromptu remarks.

A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.

If you are going through hell, keep going.

A prisoner of war is a man who tries to kill you and fails, and then asks you not to kill him.

Alimony is like buying hay for a dead horse.

Marriage is a wonderful institution, but who wants to live in an institution?

Military intelligence is a contradiction in terms.

No man goes before his time - unless the boss leaves early.

Whoever named it necking was a poor judge of anatomy.

Women should be obscene and not heard.

And of course: "I never forget a face, but in your case I'll make an exception".

There was a senior officer in WWII that said to his troops "Your job is not to die for your country, it is to make the Germans die for theirs."

The distaff view...

He taught me housekeeping; when I divorce I keep the house.

How many husbands have I had? You mean apart from my own?

I never hated a man enough to give him the diamonds back.

Men love with their eyes; women love with their ears.

I want a man who's kind and understanding. Is that too much to ask of a millionaire?

There’s a whole host of good quotes out there and some from surprising area;

“How fortunate for governments that the people they administer don't think.”

“I use emotion for the many and reserve reason for the few. “

“Make the lie big, make it simple, keep saying it, and eventually they will believe it. “

Adolf Hitler

There is a good quote that is attributed to Edmund Burke which goes “ All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good people do nothing”. But I am reliably informed that he never said it, which is a shame as it’s a damn good quote.

The Winston Churchil quote about being drunk was said to Lady Astal.

But my fav quote is this one and it means such a lot in the modern world even though it was written over 100 years ago.

“There is scarcely anything in the world that some man cannot make a little worse, and sell a little more cheaply. The person who buys on price alone is this man's lawful prey.”

John Ruskin

Not so much a quote but I've always loved this

When the Nazis came for the communists,
I remained silent;
I was not a communist.

When they locked up the social democrats,
I remained silent;
I was not a social democrat.

When they came for the trade unionists,
I did not speak out;
I was not a trade unionist.

When they came for the Jews,
I remained silent;
I wasn't a Jew.

When they came for me,
there was no one left to speak out.

Martin Niemöller

and my personal favourite

Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe. - Albert Einstein

The Winston Churchil quote about being drunk was said to Lady Astal.

Lady Astor Bear **thumbup

Another UK pol with US ties - although she was born there - and I think she was the second female MP.

Her and Churchill had many rambunctions (?) One not already quoted was when Churchill complained that having women in Parliament was like a woman invaded his bathroom. To which she replied " You are not handsome enough to worry."
