Medieval - I've just read a fascinating book about Edward III (The Perfect King: The Life of Edward III, Father of the English Nation by Ian Mortimer. One of the best biographies I've ever read, full of interest throughout. Pre-historic Try reading the 'Clan of the Cave Bear' set of novels by Jean M Auel. Russian history pre revolution and up to and including Stalin Two very good books by Orlando Figes (A People's Tragedy: The Russian Revolution, 1891-1924 - - - The Whisperers: Private Life in Stalin's Russia) both of which show the difficulties and tragedies the Russian people had to live through. Both of these books are quite hard going, however, with the Stalin one the easiest of the two, but with some horrowing examples of life under him, told by the people who survived the gulags etc. So you see, I'm very interested in history, both factual and via historical novels. |

I am enjoying reading about the khazars and the khasar kingdom although you will have difficulty in finding any mention in historical text books, i only stumbled upon it by accident whilst researching the Talmud. |

all sounds very interesting **thumbup I'm acquiring an interest in history; I've yet to finish a book on the French Revolution. You might like that period also. Not sure I have a 'favourite' period in history but find some eras more intriguing than others. Especially interested in what were the forces of revolution and change around the time of the French revolution above. For instance, my 3 below: 1. 1775: American Constitution is drawn up. Freedom, liberty, equality, etc. then one of the signatories Jefferson travels to France. 2. 1789: French Revolution / storming of the Bastille. Liberty, equality, fraternity, etc. Wolfe Tone travels to France from Ireland 3. 1798: Leads revolution in Ireland. Social revolution, nationalism or American new world politics? All is not what it appears at first sight methinks  I'm not suggesting yet another conspiracy. Only asking the question, before Dr. Nick attacks me again :D |
