I dont realy see a place for him.

The guy is 2/3 moves ahead of everyone which means he wont be able to fit into the team.

How many time has we seen him play great through balls for jerome to runn onto only for jerome to stand still - now im not saying that is hlebs fault or cams fault, theyre just leagues apart.

Dugary however was a world class player but he could see the rest of the teams limitations and strengths, hleb (as eck himself has said) wants us to have movement off the ball like arsenal did/do - and that isnt going to happen with the players we have - playing a 442 our strongest midfield imo is

bentley-gardner-fergie-larsson

larsson was by all accounts awesome today as was benley - while technically and in his head hleb is a better player than garnder, it doesnt mater when his forward thinking leads to passes going astray

I disagree with this. Hleb is not wrong but he does need to keep things a little simpler. There is nothing wrong with playing a 1-2, passing and keeping the ball. Part of Birmingham's evolution must be to embrace this type of football otherwise we will never progress.

We appear to have move further back to our roots of being battlers but this can only take us so far. Ultimately the boxer will always fair better than the bruiser.

McLeish must stay the course and get the football to be played on the ground. With players like Hleb, Bentley, Ferguson and Gardner their is no reason why we cant do this.

Jerome must be ready to take thorugh balls instead of just getting on the end of crosses and balls over the top. If Jerome misses a header or the ball over the top goes straight to the oppositions goal keeper they dont just give up trying to attack they try it again.

Similarly if Jerome misses a through ball he shouldnt give up. Instead he should be looking for the next opportunity. A threaded ball from Hleb will be a very effective weapon. Arsenal are not superhuman they will practice these as excercises. We have to as well.

Hleb is a quality asset and we have to see how we can use him in the team. But Hleb also has to realise he is taking a good weekly salary and he is here to contribute and enhance us with his talent and not berate his fellow professionals.

Dont agree that Larsson was anything special today, infact I was annoyed that a far superior player (Bentley) was shoved out on the left to accommodate where for my money he is less effective. I would rather have Bentley on the right and Hleb or Beusajour on the left.

So...back to the original question...is he injured, out of favour...or out of the club?

Ankle knock was mentioned in the week, hence not being in the squad last week. Probably continued into this week if he wasn't on the bench... {I don't know if he was or not today, I've just got back from work}

Bowyer should have started or at least been on the pitch for Gardener with at the very latest, 20 mins to go.

As for Hleb, he is only effective when we are on top otherwise he is no use to us.

  • Zigic and Martins will be on the same wavelength as Hleb
  • Gardner like Jerome lacks class but would be a great impact player if we are chasing the game.
  • Larsson is playing on the right because that is where he'll play at Wembley

DAILY EXPRESS MATCH REPORT:
Unbelievably they went into action against Stoke looking to record their first back-to-back wins in the Premier League for 14 months. Ben Foster’s recovery from the thumb injury was a welcome boost.

The absence of Alexander Hleb and a glue-pot of a pitch were not. With Hleb on the treatment table, the task of quality controller was shared between David Bentley and Seb Larsson, who valiantly tried to unpick a hole in Stoke’s defence. Swede Larsson may not be very happy with the way the club tried to sell him in January but he never shirks on the pitch.

He can also conjure some magic as a deadball specialist and proved it with an early free-kick which Zigic could only head over the bar.

Zigic was the tallest player at St Andrew’s, three inches taller than John Carew, while Kenwyne Jones, Robert Huth and Ryan Shawcross are also towering presences. Perhaps not surprisingly, the battle was more than a little airborne despite the best efforts of Bentley, Larsson and Stoke’s Jermaine Pennant.

We actually missed Hleb against Stoke

Game was in absolutely dire need of someone who could pick out a defence splitting pass or hold on the ball and look around for options

Lot of hoofball and 'up and under' v Stoke

But I'm not knocking Blues or McLeish so much

Stoke are the most boring team in the Premier League (and the most brutal as well) and have the most negative and conceited big head of a manager (Pulis) so I wan't expecting a goal fest at all.......They even make Blackburn, Bolton and Wigan look like angels

Just glad we got the three points even if I did have to wait until three minutes past normal time **thumbup
