OK it was a good goal but most players have done that in training a couple of times in their time, he caught it on his shin and it went in and looked brilliant but for fergie to say it is the best ever goal at old trafford is a joke, I thought their first was a better goal.

i have done it in training myself, but never in front of 76,000 against our closest and fiercest rivals.
i thought it was sensational and be honest if jerome had scored it for blues and it was the winner against villa you would have had it on the bottom of all your posts etc for ever. give the guy some credit. and take your royal blue tinted specs off.

if you've done exactly that in training then you should have been a pro. the ball was going away from him, he's hit it from 6ft in the air and it's gone straight in the corner and you say he shinned it???? you don't get that power from shinning it mate, ever....

i played for teams like kiddy, bromsgrove, highgate and a couple of others and played with and against ex pro's often and trained twice a week alongside them - i've never seen one like that with the exception of one by trevor sinclair for qpr

Was a sensational goal in all fairness.

Everybodys scored a great goal in Sunday league or similar surely?

I was nowhere near being a pro but i did score a 35 yard volley in the cup 1/4s when I was 16!

His first goal as a kid for Everton against Seaman...the commentator said "Rooney, remember my name" After a terrific shot from distance.

A comment at that is almost - almost - as famous as "They think it's all Over". Not quite, but close.

There has been lot's of overhead kicks, some more graceful and fluid, some more accidental.

The fact is that Rooney's attempt -which 999 times out of a thousand would miss and be howled at with derision - went in. Against Joe **thumbup

Shows he has got the guts ro try it anyway.

Why deride him ?

Rooney's 3 distinctive goals...

for Everton vs Arsenal 2002 - the curler past Seaman

for United vs Newcastle 2005 - the spectacular volley

for United vs Man City 2011 - the sublime overhead

and 3 of the best in Premier League history. You've got to give him the adulation he deserves.

What about john Gayle

But I think people are ravibg about it not only because it was a brilliant strike but because of everything else:

1 up to that point he hadn't played brilliant

2 it was the winning goal

3 it was against closest rivals

4 hr has had a very poor season by his standards

It was a fantastic strike- almost as good as Barry Bridges goal against Arsenal in 1968. That one, unfortunately, wasn't on telly but it remains locked in my memory till the die I snuff it.

really? i was there around 76/77 as a young fella - can't remember who the manager was but i was asked to sign by a guy called johnny drake who later lost a hand in a lathe accident. i do remember seeing phil summerhill around a lot, and he was a hell of a player around that time (or was that later, i can't remember sorry). i stayed 2 seasons and struggled with a badly torn ankle ligament injury, and moved moor green for a year

I have to say, for the first time ever, I totally agree with Bobby.

It was a great goal, but let me put it like this..

If Wigan were beating Dagenham and Redbridge in the FA Cup 4-0, and Rodallega scored that goal to make it 5, it would have been called a 'Great goal', and nothing else.

But because it's Rooney scoring to win a derby, and he plays for Manure, we have to see it about 400 times in about 750 different slow-motion angles.

It was a good strike, but 1) it came off his shin so it isnt like he connected how he meant to, and 2) If Harty would have been standing to his left, it would have been a simple catch and nothing more would have been said about it.

Considering hes on like £200,000 a week, and regarded as one of the world's best strikers, those sort of goals should be second-nature to him.

Like I said, it was a great goal, but the fact that I have heard people mentioning it in the same breath as Maradonna's against England.. Not a chance!

Marco Van Basten was the daddy of overhead kicks!

played one season for the youth team but could not get a regular game 2001-2002 then went to Heath Town Rangers for 2 seasons before packing it up.

I'd agree with that

The higher profile players will certainly get more attention in the media

As others have suggested, Nani's first goal for United was actually a brilliant effort in the way he killed the ball's pace with his first touch and beat his marker for pace while drawing out the keeper and then stroking a sublime effort past Hart .....Great goal

Mark Hughes scored an acrobatic goal very similar to Rooney's .....for Wales back in the early 90's if I recall

Marco Van Basten's winner for Holland in the 1988 Euro Final was brilliant as well

Barry Bridges goal v Arsenal in the 1968 FA Cup was a great call....... I have heard so much talk about that eversince......Unfortunately along with thousands of others I was locked out of St Andrews with just under 52,000 already in the ground :banghead:

I'm actually pleased for Rooney though because he was going through a bit of a goal drought until recently ......And as an England fan as well, I always like to see our 1st choice players do well at club level......except for Darren Bent of course and that cheating rascal Ashley Young :fishing: :fishing:

Ha, I was having an argument with someone today who said that Rooneys goal was one of the best goals of all time - and I actually said "what better than Mardona's for England?" and he backed down to that goal!

It was a very good strike - but hes not the first player to overhead kick the ball - and as others have said the strike wasnt clean.

If that was Cameron Jerome the papers/radio/Sky wouldnt still be banging on about it now.
