Rooney Escapes Punishment; Clattenburg bottles it

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney will face no action from the Football Association after he appeared to elbow Wigan's James McCarthy.

The incident occurred during Saturday's Premier League match at the DW Stadium in which Rooney scored one of the goals in his team's 4-0 victory.

TV replays showed Rooney catch McCarthy on the back of his head with his elbow.

Ref Mark Clattenburg awarded a free-kick but Wigan manager Roberto Martinez insisted Rooney deserved a red card.

Clattenburg told the FA on Monday that he feels he took the appropriate action, which means the governing body cannot launch disciplinary proceedings against the 25-year-old England forward.

======================

Disgraceful from Clattenburg! Fair enough to make a mistake on the day, but to see the video and not admit as much when everyone can see for themselves, and every commentator seems agreed...!

And the FA says 'OK Mark - fair comment'.

I see no ships...

All very Alice in Wonderland...

EDIT... oops - sorry - just saw the other thread.... the little football icon for unread threads did not appear on it, so I did not spot it.

I dont think he bottled it, I dont think he actually saw the elbow but had a feeling something happened so awarded the FK.

Really this is a joke by the FA. This man is a role model and to not be punished for a clear elbow isn't setting out a good example to youngsters.

Total joke - though it isn't funny is it?

Rooney could have easily broken McCarthy's jaw. Disgrace.

Any other team, it'd be punished.

As much as I hate him, Barton would be absolutely lambasted if he done that..

:o

Unbelievable.

Fan ran on the pitch and punched a player - jailed for 12 weeks and banned from footy grounds for 6 years.

Rooney elbows a midfielder in the face intentionally and.........nothing.

Violent conduct charge and a three match ban.

No action taken.

A shamefully obvious display of double-standards. :copno:
