Oba's winning goal on sunday gave me a flash back to Maine Road 1975. Our goal was not that much differnt to the goal that Fulham scored. But boy was the feeling oh so much better. :dancer: :kro: :blues: |

I was at Hillsborough too Draw was a fair result in that one.....Mitchell scored a bloomin' belter in that one for Foolham and Big Joe Gallagher drew us level toward the end The most annoying thing about the 1975 FA Cup semi final defeat was that Fulham never showed up at Wembley and were easily beaten by West Ham in one of the most boring and one sided Cup Finals in Wembley history .....Their keeper Peter Mellor was a hero for them at Maine Road yet at Wembley he made mistake after mistake if I recall and Fulham looked nervous.....except for the great Bobby Moore (RIP) who was well used to the place if you get my drift and was up against his old pals from the East End I'm sure we would have beaten the Hammers that day.....Rememeber the kid who scored the 2 goals ?? Alan Taylor .....A couple of years later he'd vanished out of sight....Anyone know whatever happened to him ?? But it's all 'ifs' and 'buts' though Yes, I agree......The Ghost of John Mitchell and that bizarre goal has at least been eradicated for the most part KRO |

I was at both Hillsborough and Maine Road too. I was living in London at the time and had to travel back all that way by the last train out of Manchester that night. The worst train journey of my life so far. |

I was thinking exactly the same thing last night. It's almost payback from that terrible night. My dad went but I was too young but listerned on the radio. I was heartbroken when that freak goal went in. |

My dad was 48 years old on that fateful night April '75. Today he's still alive & kicking at 83. As for me I'm 48 years old during the week Blues at last won a major final at Wembley. So I suppose there's some kind of omen. Yes 1975 was always on the back of our minds but times have moved on & relegation to the third division in 1989 was far worse than the Maine Road defeat. :kro: |

Was there at Maine Road too and remember that fateful night only too well, It wasnt the freak goal that stopped us going to Wemblet it was the superb display put in by Bobby Moore. I remember the fans too 36000 plus whilst Fulham managed a few thousand swelled only by Mancs who had only come along for a knock on the Blues. |

I have an idea that he drifted out of First Division football and ended up at Rochdale, but it is only somewhere in my mind and with that great win on Sunday sorry GREAT WIN, and a few botles of red and white wine the mind is not my own. |

A well respected poster on here had a ticket with my name on it I was making last minute plans (flights and hotel in Uxbridge were booked).....but some funds I was expecting never made my bank in time Had to call the trip off just hours before I was due to drive down to Miami to get the flight to Heathrow Absolutely gutted , mate Watched it live in HD instead from my armchair (kicked off at 11 in the morning here so had the full English breakfast treat as well) ....been on a high all week Fantastic moment for BlueNoses young and old everywhere Hopefully I will make the FA Cup Final if we get there I knew at least 12 folks who were in the stadium......Surprisingly though there were a couple of old mates I really thought would be down there at Wembley gave up on the club a few years ago.....former ST holders, got fed up of the Sullivan/Gold Regime and the ticket pricing.....They were watching in the St Andrews Tavern .....one called me at FT , I could hear all the noise in the background KRO |

FA Cup suddenly very low priority after losing to baggies! Think alex might rest half a doz regulars maybe more!! Maine rd scarred me for life Wembley was the ultimate healing process. Everything good about the blues started when KB was given the task of restoring us, what a women!!! KRO |

I too had a flash back of that Mitchell goal when we scored our second at Wembley. Those 2 semi finals against Fulham and the ultimate defeat at Maine Road set the club back years. And now nearly 36 years on from that fateful night we have been re-born and once again have the chance to push on. The Demon of that Fulham semi-final late goal has been laid to rest and replaced by our greatest ever day by becoming the 2011 Carling cup winners. Awake Birmingham City Football Club and fulfill our potential that has laid dormant for 36 years. KEEP RIGHT ON. Steve |

Listened to the game on the radio and, like all the others, it broke my heart as well. Some years later, early 1983, I was sales rep for an airline visiting a travel agency in St Albans. Chatting to the manager he told me they had set up a new sports dept, managed by an ex-professional footballer called John Mitchell. "Would you like to meet him?" he asked. Barely able to contain myself, I replied in the affirmative. We went along to another office, where a big, suntanned bloke, with gleaming white shirt and gleaming white teeth sat behind a desk, and was introduced. "John Mitchell!" I said, "You used to play for Fulham" "That's right!" "And did you not play in the 75 Cup Final?" "Right again" "And, correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't you score the goal in the semi-final replay that took you to Wembley?" "Good heavens, you have got a good memory! How did you remember that?!" "Because I'm a *%$£*& Birmingham City supporter and you broke my ***^$*^& heart that night!!!!!" I resisted the temptation to vault over the desk to land one on him mainly 'cos he was much bigger than me!!! He apologised for the goal, and said he knew very little about it. They were all on their knees at the end of the 120 minutes, Fulham were in the Blues pen area when a shot came in, hit Gary Pendrey, rebounded on to Mitchell's chest and went back over the line. End of. He went on to tell me that a couple of years later Fulham told him he could go, and a deal with Blues was agreed for 100k. He travelled up to meet manager Willie Bell for a medical and to discuss terms, but on his arrival Willie apologised, said the board had given him an extra 40k so he had decided to buy Don Givens from QPR instead. Givens would give him extra options in both midfield and attack. Mitchell returned to Fulham and joind Millwall later that summer. So our nememsis so nearly became a Bluenose. Wonder how he would have been received by the lads on the terraces? Nice guy, though. Good company |

KRO p.s someone on here said Blues mounted one more attack after the goal but in my mind ref allowed us to kick off and blew up instantly!!! |

Correct, as thats what I can remember of that dire night, as right after that goal, we went back to the centre circle and kicked off and the ref blew up, we did not get another attack in. Also Gary Pendrey recalls this on the Histroy of the Blues video |

When John Mitchell retired in 1978 from injury he became a successful businessman. In later years he was part of a consortium that took over Luton town and had several spells as a Director. |

warden That must have been heart breaking as a 7 yr old! I was 22 and since then I have never allowed myself to raise my hopes to the same degree! At Wembley V Arsenal I remember seeing 80 mins come up on the clock and thinking `Well noone can say we have disgraced ourselves` it had never crossed my miond that we could wqin the thing. When we scored even I recall thinking Arsenal will not have time to score two! So we have a moral victory!! Winning put us on a different level which lasted till the final whistle at Spurs!!! KRO |
