Pehaps we should write to the Premier League and ask them to deduct 3 points as Saturday's victory doesnt count because Bolton have a poor away record and our goalie made loads of save. |

What is awesome about a guy who has taken eight months to realize that the best striker in the club by far is one Kevin Phillips? Personally I think the loan deals on Martins and Derbyshire were a waste of time and money. |

OK, Derbyshire I'll give you, but we've seen about three minutes of Martins. And I'm struggling to work out how a player not playing to his potential (like Derbyshire has managed to do so all season) is suddenly the managers fault. |

Hod, my point is that we didn't need Martins in the first place. And aren't you at all suspicious that his whereabouts were unknown last week? Surely he could have reached the club if he'd have been at all bothered? There is also the distinct possibilty that Derbyshire IS playing to his potential and that the answer is a very simple one- he's no good. After all is McLeish the chap who brought Marcus Bent to the club? I think there about 70,000 people in this area who could have put Big Eck right on that one. How awesome is that? |

He is a leader and a figure head, a man of integrity. He has the respect of the players. He has set about the campaign with a lesser squad and competed well. We did well against top 6 sides including a win against Chelsea. This is excellent work. To answer your question directly. Phillips has been somewhat of a blind spot for McLeish and he appears to accept that Phillips is proving us all wrong. You can understand his point of view a 37 year old striker playing in one of the top leagues in the world for 90 minutes. It's a big ask. I think he was hoping Jerome would get over his drought and come good. When I first saw Phillips score in the cup I thought he was looking good. I thought it was fair enough leaving him out through January as we up against top 6 sides playing 4-5-1 and Jerome's work rate is better and needed. I was disappointed he didnt come on as sub more though. However I did post that he should have given Phillips a shout in the Newcastle. He has an excellent record and I think it was a missed opportunity. Unfortunately he didnt read the forum or Im sure he would of :-) No manager is perfect just ask Ferguson who at the moment has to watch his team play from the stand and Wenger who's beautiful football isnt winning him anything. A manager has to make decisions not all of them come off. Furthermore please remember this was Plan D he was working to. Unfortunately plan D didnt work out that great. Hleb has been injured most of the time. Derbyshire hasnt really been that successful and Jerome isnt scoring. Why didnt he use Phillips more. Well McLeish didnt plan on Jerome having a goal drought. We also got off to a poor start of the season letting in goals. He had to do something to stop the leaks. Given this considering we are still competing in the campaign and doing better than Villa who have a squad worth at least twice as much as us. I dont think we have much to complain about given this combined with the Carling cup I think "awesome" is still pretty spot on. Phillips "may or may not" have picked us up possibly another 3 points by now at the end of the day we really dont know. As fans we pick a winning team and trounce the opposition 10-0 every week but in reality it is not as easy. All in all McLeish is a fantastic manager and we are lucky to have him. Would you rather have Houllier? Ive said it once I'll say it again Birmingham City have their man in McLeish. :blues: |

Tony, I also like AM and find him a man of integrity and many other of the positive things you say about him but I still think he has made a mess of our attacking options. You may recall all the panic on this board when we didn't land Keane but I said at the time that KP could be the answer to our goalscoring problems- he not only the best finisher at the club by miles but his general play is vastly superior to any of his rivals. I can't quite understand all the fuss about giving Bowyer another year because I believe KP is the man we should get on board for next season. |

As a man he is top notch ....but.... Eck is negative and we do play negative football, only one team has scored less goals than us in all 4 divisions and untill we get a decent striker in and Eck starts to play more attacking football I will be unconvinced with him. |

Given that Mcliesh clearly cannot work with the "star Player" types and is in his element with the hard graft bread and Butter types, for me it is not about being convinced with him its about the boards future plans. If we want to be a yo yo club then stay with eck, if we want to bring guys like Hleb, Bentley etc IMO he is not equipped to get the best out of these types of players. |

Well what can I say you called it right. If you look at the beginning of the season we did quite well going forward but we leaked goals at the back and lost a few home games to teams we beat last year. I think McLeish changed to a more defensive strategy as he didnt want Blues to land stranded at the bottom of the league. Stoke who were suffering had to change things about too. His strategy worked we stopped conceding and we were not losing matches. Problem was we werent getting enough to nick the wins. If you want to play Phillips constantly your looking at a 4-4-2 formation. We were showing weakness at the back we needed to get points on the board and get into the premier league campaign. I think for a lesser club starting out being difficult to beat and making sure your not the club at the bottom at Christmas is sound strategy. Between November and January we were playing many top 6 clubs. We played 4-5-1 and we did well, we stayed out of the bottom 3 and we were competing well. So when do we use Phillips I think we should have started him against WBA and Newcastle. McLeish is probably a little embarrassed to be honest that he may have missed it. Im not sure to be honest whether we could/should rely on Phillips at 38. Nothing against Phillips but it is defying the traditional thinking of the game. The better diets and fitness programmes that premier league players have is extending their careers in the top flight. Combine this with the financial pressures on clubs and difficulty to pay or find available quality forwards. It isnt surprising that managers are needing time to readjust their thinking as they begin to factor this new aspect of the game into their plans. Lets be honest who would have thought Scholes and Giggs would be going as long as they have been for ManUtd one of the biggest teams in the world. I just hope Phillips gets more starts from now on and finishes the season in a blaze of glory. It will be good for him and good for Blues. If Phillips scores a goal in every game he can shout "I told you so" from the roof tops as much as he likes for all I care in fact I will join him if he wants. It's a bit different now though because the challenge is now on him. He will probably be starting games now so he has to go out there and continue to prove to us all that he is still the man. We are all willing him to do it. :blues: |

You have to look at the bigger picture. If we finish 15th this season we've had a good year. We only have two genuine creative players in McFadden and Hleb, they've both been injured all season. Zigic took time to adjust. Martins hasn't set the world alight. Everyone agrees we've signed good players in every window. Tactics and selections have hindered us slightly, but being new to the league and still building out our squad has hindered us the most. We're above Vile and West Ham who have historically spent much, much more than us. As supporters we should look to the positives. We're out of the relegation zone with a game in hand. Next season players will jump through hoops of flames to sign for a PL club playing in Europe. Sometimes our fans expect too much. We're in a transitional period. Look at the bigger picture and dare to say McLeish hasn't achieved amazing things. Test him and he will leave for a club like Man City one day. |

:LMAO: i can see Man Cities fans now with Eck being their next manager, how would any team or supporters want a manager that has kept us in and out of the bottom 3 most of the season and the lowest scoreing team bar one in all 4 divisions. |

Man City havent won a trophy since 1981. If Eck went there and won the Carling Cup next year you can bet they'd be grateful, no matter how he won it. How can you not appreciate what Mcleish has done for us; he has brought success to a club that has been starved of it for so long. We had our highest ever prem finish last year with our longest unbeaten run, and have just won our first major honour and are on track to stay up. When we stay up, this year will be our greatest ever year, masterminded by one of our greatest ever managers, made even better when Houllier takes your lot down **thumbup |
