It has been a long time coming though - I imagine he is on a decent wage and he has been poor up to today

£75,000 a week.

Agree - not one other man on the pitch including Ferguson could have done what he did today - top play

Fertguson is not nearly in Hleb's class. Rolf Harris v Rembrandt in my view.

Not sure why the comparison.

Like pooley said above, Hleb has been useless for the vast majority of the season despite his astronomical wages.

Other than his assist at Fulham, this is the first time I remember him having a positive impact.

Meanwhile, Baz has generally been a rock, one of our most reliable and influential performers for the past two seasons.

Hleb is a class player but he has not done it for us this season. He's always injured and has a questionable attitude. let him have 20 here and there if we need him to try and bring some magic but we cannot rely on him, fact. bit like Martins. take the tap in away, what exactly has he added to us? i wish people would see beyond the 'big' name

I'd gamble with Hleb against Chelsea. Okay, he's not the battler we need at times but genuinely good footballers like Hleb go better against footballing teams like Chelsea.

In reality, we're probably not going to win anyway, so why not try starting with him?

I think he probably will start with Hleb. Away from home we shall probably play 451 or 4411 anyway, with Jerome spearheading the attack. I'd be very surprised if Philips did another 90 minutes only 4 days after his previous game.

He was the only Blues player with ability on the ball to pick out accurate passes. No surprise there.

Against Chelsea, if we play like we did against Sunderland, we'll get hammered. We'll need someone who can put his foot on the ball, and present a threat in forward areas.....enter Hleb.

Hleb never puts his "foot on the ball"
:LMAO:

He passes quickly - just like at Arsenal and Barca (where he made only 19 appearances mate)

He is good, really good, but isn't a "team-fit" imo.

Dugarry took about 3 matches to adjust to "our" quality :LMAO:

Hleb is still struggling to adjust and know his team mates.

He is quality, YES.

Needs to adjust and play as a team player, not a condescending visitor.

I am not rubbshing him, he is a bloody good player - but could he play with a broken toe-nail when his team mates have played with broken ribs ?

McLeish's team is built on endevour, mutual-trust and work.

Fine to have a showpiece player **thumbup

30 minutes a match to show his skills?

90 minutes...has he made it yet ?

And we are paying "How Mutch" ? - per week ? For these silky skills?

Surely we can aim for more than "endeavour".
Endeavour is now great in the position we are in, and will hopefully get us out of trouble.
We are even applauding Jerome's endeavour now.
Lets have more than endeavour next season please.
I'm fed up of battling blues earning a result.
First Bruce and now McLeish.
There must be a compromise.

I have enjoyed Alex Hleb's moments on the pitch along with some of Bentley's.
Yes, they don't' have the same ethos, and I do struggle with that when we are close to the bottom of the table, but lets encourage some good footballers to come next season to add a even little bit of quality to the side.

I think it must be thoroughly humiliating for a player of Hleb's class to be benched while he looks on at our quite awful midfield. He is the most skilful player we've had at the club since Dugarry but McLeish has a deep suspicion of such players -why he signs them I'll never know if he's not going to use them. Remember Zarate anyone?

If Hleb is fit, he should always start. Our strikers haven't scored nearly enough this season, and a lack of creativity from midfield is one reason why. It is plain to see that we have missed McFadden's input and ability to pick out a pass. Hleb should have been used in his absence.

If we want to progress next season, then trying to secure Hleb and Bentley should be a priority. They're here, now lets keep them, try and secure Seb too, and then simply concentrate on bringing a decent striker in.

I'd like to think that if we can survive this season then next year we could do something about the quality of our football but the problem is I'm not sure guys like Hleb would want to hang around till next season to be put on the bench. With the notable exception of Gardner I'd like to see Blues midfield completely re-vamped with Ferguson going back to the Northern Pub League (where he belongs) Bowyer sent to help Walsall get out of League 2 and Larsson finally appearing in Chelsea's colours (which I'm sure is where he thinks he belongs.

McLeish has done well in turning into a dogged bunch with admirable spirit but I'm not not sure that is enough for many Bluesnoses who long to see a bit of entertainment occasionally. None of us is expecting Barcelona but I'd like to see us pass as well as , say, the Baggies- right now it is hard work watching Brum.

Let's assume that Hleb is to start against Chelsea, where exactly would you play him?

Would it be just behind the lone striker (whoever that might be) or replacing someone in midfield such as Ferguson?

(Yesterday Ferguson looked pedestrian and got caught in possession too often.)

Or perhaps replace Bowyer with Hleb because there is very little time for Bowyer to recover for Wednesday?

Maybe replace Ferguson with Hleb and replace Bowyer with Beau.

On the other hand AM well go for five in midfield.

You obviously watch a completely different game to me then old boy.

Hlebs first touch is different class, and he often carries the ball into forward areas at pace from a central midfield position.

I agree with you regards the injured toe-nbail comparison to brioken ribs etc, Roger Johnson is an animal and Barry Fergusons team ethic is second to none, but that shouldn't be to the detriment of having some higher level of football brain in the team.

IMO.

Why the negativity against Barry,he is playing with broken ribs.
To compere him with Hleb is just is not right.
Barry is a holding Midfielder were as Hleb is a attacking midfielder,,

Ok: show me the stats proving any kind of SIGNIFICANT involvement on Ferguson's part. I'm racking my brains trying to remember a single ASSIST from Ferguson this season and I certainly don't need to torture myself in trying to recall the number of Premiership goals he's scores in almost two seasons with us because the answer is zero, zilch, zip (take your pick)

As someone rightly pointed out BF sets the tempo for the team but that tempo is so slow it makes a Leonard Cohen song sound exhilharating. And do you recall the furore made on this forum about Ridgewell's bit of nonsense at Blackburn? (from an yet another unnecessary Ferguson back pass, incidentally?) Because it reminded me an awful lot of the unholy mess Ferguson made of clearing his lines yesterday- we were fortunate that we had an excellent bit of work from Foster and then others to bail out Bazz on this occasion.

Ferguson played well in the second half of the semi final at West Ham and very well in the second half in the return leg and that's it- there is no other game when he distinguished himself throughout the course of this season. His weak clearing header from Wilshere's shot in the CC Final was picked by Arsenal before they equalized he is absolutely obsessed with the back pass and his first instinct is almost always to turn back towardshis own goal - he did this repeatedly yesterday when there colleagues free in more advanced positions.

I have nothing against Ferguson except for the staggeringly obvious fact that he is MASSIVELY overrated by most of the people on this forum.

Baggies are refreshing compared with us...even despite a much worse defence and a suspect goalie ( to be kind) they are higher than us arent they?

That's your opinion, but i bet there a thousands of fans who outnumber you. Until about December i think BF was voted blues' man of the match in nearly every home game by the crowd. He was OUTSTANDING last season, and he gives his all for the club. How many players in the prem would keep doing what he is doing with broken ribs? i'm not making excuses for him because recently he has been poor, but his courage and commitment is commendable; a model pro.
