Ben Foster
Roger Johnson or Scott Dann
Craig Gardener
Steven Carr
Lee Bowyer
James McFadden
Sturat Paranby
Curtis Davies
Cameron Jerome

With some Championship additions this could be the nucleus for a strong challenge next year.
I have assumed our youngsters Mutch, Redmond etc will be in the squad.

Which of the current suad is vital in your opinion?

I do think a premier club will come in for Foster and Gardner. Their performances were above average Premier class and they will have caught the eyes of all clubs below Liverpool.

Johnson will defo go and Scott Dann will most likely be victim (for us) of a Premier club signing him in the January window.

My worry is McLeish ain't got it in him to root out those young players who will do it for us in the CCC and then in the Prem.

We really needed someone like Paul Lambert at Norwich.

For me, I would let Bowyer go, and Jerome. I think Gardner will stay for at least a season and Foster might stay too. I'd try to hang on to Zigic and get a player to play alongside him - a goalscorer from the lower divisions, such as Mackail-Smith or Danny Graham, perhaps. Otherwise, I broadly agree with you!

I'd like to think we'd have more chance keeping Dann than Johnson, and that's because of his injury. I know Dalgleish is keen on him, but I've a feeling that the bid will wait until January, to ascertain how he recovers.

I'd like to keep Foster, because a good keeper can get you 10 or 12 points in a division like the Championship. We may not have the option though, and a bid over what we paid may be too good to turn down.

Davies we need to keep, as he could be a very important player at this level. I think we'll have no problems on that score.

Ridgewell and Carr I also think we need to try to hold on to.

Gardner is probably our most important player at the moment, and I don't think we should entertain any bid of less than £5m.

Beausejour is another one who could be critical, and holding on to him is also a must.

Personally, I'd like to keep Jerome, as I think he is vastly underated, and with a striker alongside him, and a midfield to support him, he could be a very important player in the Championship. I can't blame people, or himself, for feeling it could be time for a move.

All others, frankly, are surplus to requirements, and I include Ferguson in that field, not because he's not good enough, but because I feel his presence is pushing our style of play in the wrong direction.

We went down because we didn't score enough goals, and we didn't score enough goals because of a total lack of pace, both in our team and the manner of our play. This is the crucial aspect that the manager and the board must answer over the summer.

Keep:

Craig Gardner
At least one of Foster/Dann/Johnson
Steven Carr
Curtis Davies
Ridge or Parnaby
One of McFadden/Zigic/Jerome
Beausejour

The likes of Fahey, Mutch, Redmond etc will stay, and i can see Fergie staying with Eck tbh

I'd let Parnaby go too though. Too injury prone, and easily replacable.

If we start the season, with a committed spine of :

Foster
Carr? -- Davies -- Dann -- Ridgewell
RM -- Gardner -- CM -- Beausejour
ST -- ST

Then we're in a good place IMO. (Carr could be replaced if he wants out or whatever with Naughton/Clyne)

That would mean we could bring in money from Johnson, Zigic, Jerome, Ferguson maybe, aswell as freeing up money from the likes of Hleb, Bentley, Larsson, Bowyer, Derbyshire off the wage bill.

I'm not convinced Foster's staying, however much he wants to. I personally think that the lineup will start like this and needs enhancements

Taylor

Carr (backup needed)
Ridgewell (backup needed)
Davies (backup needed)
Murphy (replacement needed)

Redmond (backup needed)
Ferguson (backup Michel)
Gardner (backup Fahey)
Beausejour (backup needed)

Jerome (backup needed)
McFadden (Asante, at a push, as backup. Maybe too early for him?)

Aw, that's me out then...

And anyway, I'm prepared to kill for the shirt, but not die for it.

I would think Dann is more likely to go than Johnson but either way I can't see us keeping both of them, so a Dann/Johnson and Davies partnership would be fine, Carr and Ridge I'd like to see fresh competition brought in for their places.

Hopefully Foster will stay but if not we'll need competition for Doyle, If no Prem teams go for him maybe the Goalie at Cov, Westwood.

Obviously right midfield is somewhere we need to buy for, Gardener I would think will give us at least a season in the Champ and should prove too much for a lot of opposition, Mutch can play a big role, he proved at Doncaster and Watford that he is very good at this level, Ferguson I'd like to stay an old head who can pick teams apart, as long as the team is freshened up around him he will be invaluable in the Champ.

Redmond and Beausejour are still somewhat of an unknown quantity for us on the left so I'd be tempted to bring someone new in, I'd let McFadden go as he was rubbish for us last time around in the Champ.

Upfront I think we all know it's time for a big shake up, I'd probably keep Jerome and Phillips as squad players (unless someone offers decent money) and bring a couple of new faces in.

Ideally I'd like to see................

...................................Foster

Carr/New......Dann/Davies....Johnson.......Ridge/New

New.............Gardener........Ferguson...Beau/Redmond/New

.......................New...............New

Going out we lose the loan players, Derbyshire, Bentley and Hleb, and then get rid of Parnaby, Zigic, McFadden, Bowyer, Larsson and Fahey.

Don`t wish to sound like a doom and gloom merchant, but I really think Mcleish has a massive task on his hands this time out. Its a far bigger job this time round than the previous 2 times we went down and make no bones about it, this team is going to be ripped to pieces and the team we send out first game of the season will have only 3-4 players out of the current crop in it unfortunately. :crying:

I must admit that was my first thought when I read that Friedel is going to Liverpool.

'unfortunately?' Two too many, I'd say. What is it that endears these sad failures to so many? Out with old and in with the new, I say.

I very much doubt Foster will go to the Vile...

Much, much bigger teams will be In for him, Spurs, Arsenal.......

Don't buy the pressure thing, money talks.... and Spurs and the Gunners will pay out more than Vile will....
