Interesting read http://www.birminghammail.net/birmingham-s...97319-28987434/ Comments (13) Recommend (11) BLUES were today told they have the right man for the job in Chris Hughton. But supporters were also warned not to expect him to deliver promotion from the Championship next season. David Pleat managed Hughton at Spurs during the new Blues boss’s 13-year White Hart Lane playing career. And he had Hughton by his side as assistant manager during three caretaker spells. Pleat knows Hughton as well as anyone in the game and told the Birmingham Mail Carson Yeung had got the perfect replacement for Alex McLeish. “Chris is intelligent, a confident boy, and I’m delighted for him that he’s got a crack at this job,” said Pleat, on the day Hughton met the Blues squad for the first time as they reported back to Wast Hills for pre-season training. “He’s very, very diligent and exceedingly hard working. He’s not what I would call a ‘spiv’ manager/coach in any way. “He’s got good experience and I think he’s just what Birmingham need. “When the job came up, I told Chris – I texted him – that Birmingham was a club with tradition and has a chimney pot. In other words, it’s a club worth taking. “There’s a history at Birmingham and it is regarded as a big club. No, they are not in the top six, but it is regarded in the next group. And there’s a lot of them in Championship this season in that group. “If they win a few games and start to do well, then they’ve got the capacity, the potential to draw crowds, which is important. “I think he will do all right but it looks to me, with all the changes, all the difficulties, that this season will be a hard one for them – and Chris. “Will they be competitive and get promotion? I don’t think they will, no. “But in view of the present troubles, I think people will be sensible in their judgments. ‘‘I think he needs that understanding, and he will get it. There’s no way supporters, seeing what’s happening, can look at it any differently. “It won’t have been his decision to have sold Gardner, or any other player that might go like Dann or Johnson. “In the situation Birmingham are in, there’s always that chairman who comes knocking at the door and says ‘sorry, we have to sell this player, and if you don’t sell him then I will because the bank is telling me to’. “It looks as if Birmingham are paying for their profligacy of the last couple of years, putting players on good wages, and the effect of relegation. “It seems most of the parachute money won’t be available and Chris will have to do a lot of rebuilding.” After Ossie Ardiles invited Hughton on to the Spurs coaching staff in 1993, he worked under Gerry Francis, Christian Gross, George Graham, Glenn Hoddle, Pleat, Jacques Santini and Martin Jol. Hughton also had two stints as caretaker manager, as he did at Newcastle United before being appointed to the top job permanently and guiding them to the 2009-10 Championship title. Pleat added: “I know everyone at Tottenham will be wishing him well. I can’t remember him ever being sour or surly, or overly-upset in a situation working against him. I think he can treat those twin imposters the same. “People speak highly of him in football because he’s what I call a ‘proper’ person. He’s absolutely reliable. “As a coach at Tottenham he was always well-organised and what he did as manager at Newcastle United was, I believe, was under-rated.” |

I will judge the man by the players he brings in the style of football he plays and his man management and not by David Pleat who I have no respect for or any othet jumped up pundit. |

Pleat tells it like he sees it. Hughton was my third choice after O'Neil and Hughes. I think he is an excellent appointment. I've said it once I'll say it again Hughton is our Hero. :blues: |

One of Tattum's best articles in a while, and all he did was transcribe an email. Keep it up, Tatts. |

Bit harsh IMO Dave - Tatts usually writes some great articles. As for Pleat - I respect him - but I don't agree with his opinion that we won't get promoted this season. |

That genuinely made me laugh out loud! Love it! Tattum in the transfer window is the best, in those web chats? "I cannot confirm or deny the confirmation or denial of whether we are or are not looking at a player who may not actually be a player. But he might." ;) |
