Further to Sunderland's recent spending spree, particularly the purchases of Wes Brown and John O'Shea, it has been reported that Sunderland will be looking to move on a number of fringe/out of favour players. Amongst the names purportedly set to leave are Matt Kilgallon, George McCartney and Nyron Nosworthy.

Given the fact that we are likely to lose a number of our first choice defenders, Chris Hughton could do a lot worse than targeting one or more of the above Stadium of Light defenders (provided that their transfer fees/wages are financially viable).

In my opinion, Matt Kilgallon would be a great addition to Davies and Caldwell at centre half and as a replacement for Dann/Johnson. Kilgallon has proven himself an excellent defender at this level for both Sheffield Utd and Leeds. However, things haven't really gone for him at the Stadium of Light and he was loaned out to both Middlesbrough and Doncaster last season.

George McCartney is a player we have been linked with before and would be a great replacement for Ridgewell at left back in the event that Ridgewell is sold or moved over to the centre of defence. McCartney has spent the majority of his career at Sunderland and West Ham, however, he spent a successful loan spell at Leeds Utd last season and would be more than capable at this level.

Nyron Nosworthy can play at both centre back and right back. He is probably the least appealing of the three, however, I do remember him being very good for Watford, but that was a number of years ago. Nosworthy spent the majority of last season on loan at Sheffield Utd and considering their demise, we could probably do without him. Although, I must admit, I did not see him in action.

Kilgallon was very good for Leeds and won player of the season at Sheffield Utd. He hasn't had much of a chance since joining Sunderland and has been loaned out a couple times. Given a fresh start at a new club, he could be a very good acquisition.

Have always been a big fan of McCartney and Kilgallon .. especially the latter.

Bit concerning how their careers seem to have nose-dived in the past couple of years, but both definitely good enough for this level, and Bruce seems keen to get shot for any price.

Offer £500k for the two of them and I think we'd have a bargain on our hands.

Car-----Davies---Kilgallon---McCartney

Would be the best back 5 in the league IMO, and would allow us to sell Dann RJ and Ridgewell for c.£20m.

Kilgallon would be a good signing, him and Davies would make a formidable centre back partnership. We hopefully could get him on the cheap as well, for less than a million. Be a good deal if we could get it completed.

We do need cover so sign them up asap, then if Ridge does stay we have 4 central defenders to choose from. 3 isn't enough.

would imagine he is replacement for ridgewell due to him being left sided and can also play left back.

Career nosedived = Steve Bruce as manager.
