i'm off to Greece tomorrow and am taking my phone for obvious reasons. however, after hearing many horror stories of people going abroad and being charged hundreds of pounds because there phone automatically roams and picks up the local internet i want to make sure my phone is internet free while i'm away.

if i turn off the phones wi-fi capabilities will i be safe?
or will i need to completely turn of the phones whole mobile network

i don't want to start messing around with things and mess my phone up.

cheers

ringo

What I do is have my phone turned off for wi-fi, bluetooth and everything else. If I'm not expecting a call, I don't have it on at all. And you get a zillion text messages from foreign service providers if you have your phone switched on.

i would buy a cheap nokia (around £15) because even with all the precautions you could end with a bill of up to £600 its just not worth it IMO

I took my phone with me to Cyprus lsat summer - used it a few times to send texts - didnt make any calls.

It automatically switched to a local provider when I was there, and as far as I remember, my bill was no different to normal, give or take a couple of quid.

it's not calls or texts i'm worried about. some phones automatically conect to the local internet providers when you go abroad. my phone recieves all my e-mails so i'm more worried about being charged mega bucks for using the internet without realising as has often happened in the past to others.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/mobi...web-abroad.html

most people haven't actually used the internet, their phones have simply picked up the local provider and have been using the data without the user knowing. then when they get home they have a nice bill for a couple of hundred quid.

i just want to know how to switch off all internet connections while still having the use of my calling and texting capabilities.

Ah, I see.

Just seen you have a Blackberry

In that case go to the menu - then Manage Connections - and scroll down to "Mobile Network Options"

On there you can turn Data Services off - and that will stop your phone connecting to the internet/emails etc.

Or, dependent on your network provider, buy a pack of data.
It's about £10, if my memory serve me well, on orange and you get bucket loads of data included, and a txt message when your getting near your limit.
