Hey, Just looking for some advice with a problem I'm having with TNT at the moment, perhaps someone else has had this problem... I imported a laptop 2 months ago at the beginning of May, now I'm not exactly well off but I got some money for my 21st and sold my old laptop for 450, the laptop cost 600 altogether (with shipping) which was considerably cheaper than the 1300 I would have paid for it in the U.K. The Laptop was shipped over by T.N.T, they took 2 weeks to deliver (even though it was express delivery and it should have taken 5 days) from the U.S. Because it was taking longer than expected I phoned them up a few times... one of those times being told that the laptop had just been released from customs, I asked if there was any Import Tax, the woman on the phone told me no because if there was it would have flagged up on the system. I did have #120 put away (20% of 600) but once it got to June and everything had been forgotten about I slipped that money into the savings for my rent over summer. So 2 months down the line I get an Invoice, today infact I get my second letter (I didn't receive the first although I'm not living at that same address anymore). I apparently owe them #128 import tax fees, I don't understand where this has come from because A) I was told there would be no tax on it and B) Why wouldn't they just hold it up at their warehouse like any other company and then wait for me to pay the tax before delivering. I'm going to ring them tomorrow, I honestly can't afford to pay the #128 and don't see why I should have to because I was assured there was no import tax on the laptop 2 months ago just before I received it. I'm going to call them up tomorrow, any advice on what I can say etc would be great I'm not normally used to handling these big companies. |

Unfortunately, the woman gave you the wrong information. Import tax/VAT IS payable on imported electrical goods - including laptops. I imported one two years ago and had to pay the VAT before delivery. It's going to have to be a case of finding the cash or letting them return the laptop. |

They shouldn't of delivered it without getting the tax 1st. I've had a recent delivery and could not have the item until I had paid the import tax at the delivery depot. So, for a start that bit has been ****** up. I would either play your face to start with or even tell them you thought you had paid it, or even deny it was you that bought it, unless they have clear evidence... I could be wrong, but they have ****** up by giving you the goods 1st. But, don't go getting a court summons for the sake of £120 you will suffer the consequences for a long time, otherwise you'll have to pay up. You did budget it for it originally, so you knew it was coming... try the blagging scenario 1st, you never know :) |

Two things you can't avoid, tax and death. You should have known and paid it in the first place and not hope they'd forget |

Steve you say it was due to be delivered within 5 days is that their guess or is that a guaranteed service ?? was the delay caused by TNT or by the laptop company ? if it was TNT the check to see if they offer a money back guarantee on late deliveries. be careful they may say it was customs when it may not have been. You say they said there was no D&T'S to pay did you get the persons name who told you this? do TNT offer a tracking service ?? if so what does the tracking info say. If i were you i would call them and get as much info from them as possible about delays etc. who and why you may be able to use the late delivery to haggle the d&t fees down maybe paying 50% each One final bit of advice next time you buy something in the states use FEDEX you can track the parcel from start to finish and they do deliver on time. |

Phoned them up today, they agreed I can extend the payment date until I get back off holiday etc. Their excuse was that they don't charge beforehand to not hold up the parcel and then send an Invoice months later. Unfortunately I didn't get the name of the person I spoke to but I've just been told that she was wrong with no... compensation... for getting the wrong information. It was tracked, there's nothing on the tracking info apart from the entry "Released from Customs with no Problems" (Which is the point where I was told there was no Import Tax). As for 5 days it was a guarnteed service that took more like 14 days but it was due to some National Holiday over in the U.S. and the fact they don't work on weekends. @Raters: How could I have paid for it in the first place? They didn't request anything and I was told on the phone that there was no tax on it. As far as I know, I may have been misinformed, is that Import Tax for individual imports is sketchy and they let some things through without putting the import tax on it, I have indeed imported before without being taxed and assumed it was the same this time. |
